Dual Processor Motherboards-Any big advantages?
« on: October 18, 2003, 08:41:31 PM »
I've seen it before but it was said that software doesnt support it and you wont get much more performance.
Has this changed? Can you assign one task to 1 cpu and another to the next?

The software has to be coded to take advantage of the dual processors.  For most software, that isn't the case.

On the Linux side, that is much more likely to be the case.

So something like, when Cpu usage crosses 50% the other one kicks in and the work's divided. Wonder if someone could put that in their kernel.

amd 64 extreme

64 bit processing is a very viable alternative to the dual processing.

The next windows OS is supposed to be a 64 bit OS so the amd 64 will be the first chip to be fulyl compatible with it.

THere are amd 64 bit pcs out there now with an amazing 1600 fsb

that totally justifies the 64 bit processor and negates the need for a dual processor.

well the hope is that the pc will evolve into a 64 bit environment by 2005 and the amd64 is just part of the move. serial ATA is becoming standard, Usb 2 has almost literally replaced the old usb 1.0, agp 8x is now a standard. its hoped that the new PCI standard will become official mid next year to complete the evolution of the mother board. there are also new stuff coming out a new ddr standard, a new type of cd media nicknames 3dcd.

yeah with all this we going to need upgrades in 2005 :( sad isnt expecially when you paid so much for a new machine).

Which is why u wait patiently until the NEXT ''big thing" in the PC world comes along before you buy into the current hot revelation.

Hence why i am waiting to buy a system over 3ghz, but NOT till 4ghz comes out.

btw- 3dcd may be out sooner than u think.....no waiting till 2005, check summer of 2004.

Windows NT (i think),2000 & XP Pro (i think) is support dual CPU's.Based on what I hear is really d software utilization is d meat (software using 2 cpu's instead of 1 to do tasks) but the OS can use 2.Like if u running in dem chat rooms dat like java and it killing one u wouldn't recognize compared to a single CPU board since d other one doing other stuff..get it?...it'll be smoothh...
