Games of the future!
« on: April 15, 2005, 02:31:09 PM »
Ever since Metal Gear, games have been in that general direction. Then came GTA and that just took over for a while. But what do you all think would make the perfect game. Don't be dissin' this question. You know we all have our preferences but what do you think could put gaming over the top. what elements would you like to see in the best game of all time. Just want to know!

Well i think the elements people look for are always the same: Something that keeps your attention. It can be graphics (DOOM 3) or gameplay (HL 2 or GTA)  among some things. There will never be a "best game of all time", well not to everyone. But there will be a "best game AT the time".

Its like you said. Metal Gear was a big deal. The GTA series came in with the whole idea of free roaming. POP showed that lelvel design and interaction could be the ONLY thing to make a game succeed. KOTOR showed that a gripping story could push you to the end of a game. The next best game? Well in some cases the better game is one that takes what was good and builds on it.

I would imagine the next best game that would make peoples jaws drop may be the next Zelda game, offhand. Great story, great gameplay and most importantly, the game is "all grown up"

I expect this game to be the focus at E3, well next to the next gen consoles.

ent @ next zelda.

Zelda 64: Ocarina of Time possesed my mind. Awesome game.

Chrono Trigger: awesome game

Out of this world: awesome game

I think merging the features of these with the latest graphics and physics engines is the recipe for success.

What I love bout Nintendo, is that they realise the "good game" formula is tried and true and just needs  a coat of new paint every now and again to keep it fresh.

That is a very simplistic view, I know

So let me give you one that is a bit more adventurous.

Cross Genre games! Hybrids.

Like you said, GTA style, Savage style, best of both worlds style games. Battlefield2 is one of the best such works on the radar.

keep an eye on it!

the problem is that most publishers don't want to try a new formula, they prefer a cut and pressed  gameplay design that made money before , so little innovation is made .
Notice... little change from Halo 1 to 2 ,  many games feel like clones of Quake, Unreal, Warcraft or Startcraft .
When  game developers gain some more independance from their publishers , like with valve ,  we will see better games .

hl2 didn't move away from it's tried and true formula either, as great a game as it was.

There is room for innovation but the reality is that the majority of gamers won't spend the money on these experiments in genre deviance.

So even if an independent were to make it, their sales figures won't convince any big industry players to jump on board.

That said, we will always find the few determined people who would push the envelope and as in everything in this world, that is all that it takes to start change.

Look at the S2 guys and what they did with Savage. Awesome, for a less than 10 man independent development team.

hl2 wasn't very innovative  , but valve had enourmous independance from Vivendi,  they went to a lawsuit over delaying the game and won... and managed to delay it a further 4 months afterwards .
HL2 is obligated not to be original... bieng a sequel.... but hopefully other companies will gain similar independance and some better games will see the light of day.
Games like Jedi knight and vampires, good gamplay AND a solid story, coupled with wicked graphics .

not if they want to keep their doors open.

independance not only means liberty to make the games you want, it also means responsibility to pay the bills.

hardly puts you in a position to take risks.

Ironically, it may take some deep pocket industrial stalwarts to stand the costs of developing something out of the ordinary in the hope of coming up with a killer game / platform.

someone like nintendo.

Chaos Theory..........wicked game.

What Ubi did was just add to the gameplay. They give same more moves. He has a knife (about time) and can snap knecks from hanging upside down. The co-op online is a great idea too, and you can interact with your partner in some moves.

However as far as inovation is converned i eh care what nobody say. The only company that is staying innovative is Nintendo. Ah tellin you, you go be SURPRISED how then "silly" games people does knock does be so much fun. Nintendo is really exploring the gaming realm.

I've always been a sports title fan....and being american...a no brainer for me was always American Football...now that EA has the market cornered for the NFL, there is no telling what they will get away with as far as lack of innovation for play.  Lack of competition breeds laziness in the video game market.  With PS3 utilizing Blue Ray technology, one would hope that the ps3 version of Madden would rock.  25 to 50 gb of space leaves plenty of room for innovation.  Heck, Madden should come complete with every team ever...complete with player likeness for all those players.   Anything less, I will more than likely deem a disappointment.
I'd believe u if you were right.

They have no reason to do that  - I was stupid enough (being european and football fanatic) to buy into their fifa franchise - getting a miniscule update every year.

EA stopped innovating a long time ago - it's all about squeezing the license and screwing the consumer

I've read a little about the Next Gen Madden game....It seems they are going to focus on passing this year...since the NFL season did the same...there will be at least a neat addition of using QB awareness to limit the qb's view of the field....and I dunno about lack of innovation...the hit stick was nice...and I was very happy to see some improvements to the defensive AI (even though I can still score 70+ points with default quarters).
I'd believe u if you were right.

WHat i want to see is what they are doing with the graphics on the consoles. They have great lighting and texture etc etc. But if you look at the characters the clothes look like part of the body minus a couple things blowing like scarfs etc. showing the clothes blowing in the wind in say FIFA would be awesome. The faces are looking good, but the rest of the figure up close needs work. Simple things like this is what makes a game a cut above the rest ESPECIALLY where their competition is Winning Eleven.

I think mixing of different genres will work in some instances but not in many. Take for instance KotOR and now think of Jade Empire. Though I haven't played it myself what I gather is, its like KotOR but with a more involved fightign system say like Jedi Knight and such. Its kind of a merge between a RPG but with more real time 3rd person shootem fighting. Thats fine and works VERY well apparently. Now think about mixing a racing/sim with an RPG element... me personally I don't think I appreciate that too much. To a certain extent as NFSU2 and such have a semi rpg element with the whole underground racer who get jacked etc. But to be honest I could do without it. Take for instance Midnight club II. It was not as involved (IMO) with a story as it was with the game itself. The next uber game/s will be in several genres but not too many crossovers I believe. Graphics will improve, physics, framerates, storyline. All these elements will define the BEST games of EACH genre. IMO there is never a BEST overall...but thats just me.
