« on: April 03, 2005, 10:50:42 PM »
Ok this is the deal.
My pc is running like shit again. The first time it was unstable i couldnt even play any 3d game cause it would hard ware crash or lagggg to all hell unplayable. i then did a battery of stuff memorygold test reinstalled changed all drivers checked irq's reseated eveyrthing on the pc then in the end it was my ati orginal drivers was the problem, i installed omega drivers and problem was gone. Now 2 weeks later i unplug the rig and install a filter infront im intake fan thne when i set it back up the problem is back aghain. well it not really the same this time i can enter 3d games and it only glitches eveyr so often but it takes like 15 minutes to load a game at full spec thats if it loads at all. Ive reinstalled 3 times, changed drivers numerous times, set my bios to default, removed every single overclocking feature, updated my bios im using the latest driver from omega and ati [ not at once ofcourse =) ] ive stripped down my pc and rebuilt it again, ive set my bios to all defaults, ive taken fast writing off vsync is off.
I really think its my ram but i also thought that before i changed to omega drivers the first time and it worked.  so in mean time i would luv to get back to training on cs so some ideas help would be appreciated.

It may be  your hard drive , if EVERYTHING is taking forever to load,  your hd may be dying , when my old 20 gig died it showed the same symptoms, so did my friends 120 gb, do a scandisk and look for bad /damaged sectors .
IT also may be heat ,some mobos force the cpu to underclock when the temps get high , maybe the  filter on the intake fan is heating things up? try taking off the case.
It also may be a trojan hiding around , maybe when you formatted it saved itself to your backup files and has returned again..... norton scan , or simply 'ctrl-alt-del' and look for a  strange process that  uses up cpu time.
Your psu is WAY underspec for a machine of that calibre , try disconnecting stuff you don't need eg. cdrom drives , 2nd hard drive and running a game  , i don't know how power can affect performance outside overclocking but it may be a factor .
also use almighty google to search for similar problems with your hardware.......... maybe its a common bug/conflict with your hardware config .

If ur last reply was to directed to baego bushman, I am not sure you understood him. when he asked you what is the ampage of the 12V rail he means what is the PSU itself rated to take as a maximum current. I have to agree with Trini here, that PSU is WAY below spec for a system of that calibre. Also generic ram esp purchased down here is really suspect and prone to failure, good thing is u should be able to RMA it quickly. Also again as Trini said, look for known hardware incompatibility issues, check out the manufacturer sites and Q&As to see if there are. U may want to keep away from OCing or using apps, drivers, etc tweaked for OCing (eg. Omega drivers) till u solve ur stability and nominal performance issues.

First thing that came to mind was the PSU...as mentioned already, it's below spec for the hardware you're running...I seriously doubt if it is able to push the kind of juice that your CPU + gfx card require...you should try to get a >400w PSU borrowed to test out if that's your prob...I'm pretty sure it is.

You might also wanna check for an updated BIOS for your mobo...I've seen BIOS revisions do wonders for stability on other MSI mobos...

good points all.

looks like we got it narrowed down to three main suspect areas.

Powersupply (flaming red flaming)
Hard Drive on the way out
Bios needs updating to weed out bugs

and last but not least, failing mobo.

Just from hearing how much times bushman scrap and rebuilt that machine gives me goose bumps. lol

I sure he probably did it on a static generating carpet, resting the parts on a rug with his cats / dogs running between all the while. lol

j/k

But seriously bushman, good advice iymc! Try attacking those points and you'll be back in the 3d gamedom in no time.

What you could do is borrow parts from others and swap them in one by one , and see if it gives the same trouble .  what you want :
 1. High powered PSU.
2. slower video card .
3. diff RAM .
4. sound card .
If after a fresh format , and all of the above don't make a difference, you can call me a worthless mc and pelt big stone at my house :D .

Sorry to say but I wouldn't put a WD drive in my PC if it was the last drive available...not me and WD nah...too many of their drives I seen gone bad dry so over the years...more fire!

I really wanted to believe that you got a good drive...but I suppose the evidence speaks for itself...tough break man. RMA that sucker ASAP!

Busman is that the raptor sata 36.7Gb drive?
If its indeed the harddrive why not try and update your sata controller drivers (Nvidia Nforce) or check MSI homepage, they have some kinda auto-updater thing that should provide assistance.  I have had experiences with non-updated sata controller drivers that cause corruption of data over time and resulted in the same blue screen.  This was a Via Southbridge I believe ..8527 you are on nvidia but its worth a shot and save you some shipping costs.

If you did indeed pay US$300 for the drive Im sad to say you got robbed buddy.  The superior 74GB version which supports NCQ (i believe), costs <$200 US and unless you and the customs officer had a quarrel no way you gonna pay US$100 in duty for a HDD.

When purchasing such drives heat is always an issue, maybe you should consider a decent HDD cooler from vantec or some other reputable cooling company.  I am able to cool my std 7200 drive by 20C using one.

As the others suggested please buy a new PSU, who configured that system anyways? seems like it was 'patched' together over the years.  I can tell that alot about the configurer just by the specs.

After reading this Computerman glances over at his "Bigfoot"
This sure brings back memories.....
I havn't had any problems with WD.....since I stopped using them!  ^_^

Just one more thing.  Are you sure the system is dissapating heat effectively?

Quantum drives totally pwned. Been a fan all my life. I have never liked Western Digital and have had nothing but trouble with them. The only drives that ever gave me more grief were IBM Deskstar. Those failed by the bunch.

Maxtor uses Quantum technology in their drives, hence they are my favourite in recent times and I preach that any chance I get.

Second is Seagate.

Take all of this with salt though. HDs are fragile things at best and you'll readily find horror stories on both sides of the fence.

Knock on silicon when you make your next purchase......(but still...Maxtor or Seagate or nothin!...)
