Star wars : republic commando
« on: February 03, 2005, 05:52:17 PM »
After downloading playing and beating the republic commando demo i have come to a conclusion : the game is good but not as good as we'd have expected ( after all the lucas arts buzz! ) . the graphics are good but don't even begin to measure up to half life II , doom III etc. , the gameplay is lacking  , not to mention the lack of any 'groundbreaking' material....
here are some screenies .... you'd expect a rig like mine to enjoy some anti aliasing, half life 2 can run at the same resolution with AA and be smooth, so can doom III !   even without AA the fps can dip below 20 once in awhile ....

the gameplay resembles MOHAA a bit in its squad controls, just it is more in depth as you can send squad members to do tasks eg. blow up a door , snipe .
and of course the magically thingy that raises you from the dead ....  even though you took a missle to the head.... how very realistic......

the game makes admirable use of bump mapping , though not up to the level of doom III/half life 2 it is pretty nice ......

 i give it a trinithereturnofthemc rating of 80 %
Gameplay : 7
Story : 9
Graphics : 8
Sound : 8
Originality bonus : 0 ... rips off raven shields/MOPHA's gameplay style, actually generates most of its own storyline/mission plots instead of borrowing them from other games......

to tell you de truth i find is downright crap. i uninstall that thing yes. real nonesense, i dunno what lucas was thinking.

and hoss it not right to compare games to d3 and hl2. them is games that are "legends"...that take over 4yrs to make etc. after playing riddick, d3 and hl2, my standards of games gone off de roof yes. back in the day i woulda perhaps give republic commando another try but due to riddick etc the hell with that crap, uninstall in its mc

I doh know where to start.

You "reviewing" a game after playing the demo?

Most yuh could say is that the demo not good and the game lookin like it will be mediocre. That's what I think.

And even so, you givin a mediocre game 80%?

my rating system is relative , like relative density to water . a Relative review doesn't need a whole game , just one or two levels........ if one level of the game feels as uninspiring as this does it can't be any good , and demos usually pick out the BEST part of the game, if this is the BEST i'd hate to see the worst ..
Every game has its boring levels, halo has the 'library' , half life II  has a fun but very tiring level in that prison .
as i was saying .... my rating system is like an IQ test , less than  100 gives you  a mediocre game , 100-115 an average game , that has some virtue but issues ,like halo   has great gameplay but some lazy ass designers . above 120 is an 'excellant' game  with lots of virtues and few faults , eg half life II , KOTOR 1 AFTER several patches ......

soo this game is 20%  under standard..... some might like it but i think it sux .......

I'm beginning to understand why people don't take anything you say seriously.

Demos are a sample. They give you a little taste of what a game has to offer. They by no means represent (or are meant to represent) the "best" of the game.

In fact now that I readin yuh whole post...dread, how old are you?

15 and bored and insomnic ..... so i decide to post some nonsensical crap ....
some demos do give you the best of the game, the halo demo gave you my favourite level of the game... so does the half life 2 demo  , others just give you a taste of the game  , whatever level they think that has the least bugs and/or shows off the game engine the best ........

This is the man who will replace dry, baego, rampage, cobo, etc... in the next 5 years.

prodigee iwmc.

lil rough around the edges, but then so were we all at one stage.

Don't kick him to the curb too hard, a lil jump kick to craw will suffice. lol

hahhahaha @ trinithereturnofthemc rating. I like that. Man adopt the name yes. Big move! Take the punches and roll hoss.

Trini, what about for ravenshield fans like myself, tekno, prowl, etc...you think this game will pwn for us?

The game is arcade. The strategy element is interesting, but far from RS level. The weapons feel weak.

It's kinda fun though...yuh really can't play it like a one-man run through, or you'll die. Has some potential, but nothing to jump about.

the game has nice squad based mechanics and gameplay , but it is much too fast paced to ever give you raven shield goodness, it may be quite enjoyable though for fans of Rainbow six , like Battlefront was for fans of battlefield , you have to play it for yourself to decide .

fair enough.

I was hoping for a more sombre feel. Akin to RavenShield.

If I wanted fast run and gun, I'd play PainKiller.

Something inbetween doesn't sound very appealing, but I'll give it a try and see.

Trini, yuh coulda drop a direct link for de demo pon top the thread.

Another thing I didn't like is that the enemies in the demo look like stormtroopers from afar.

I gone runnin next to a man behind a crate thinkin is my partner. Thermal detonator tuh face.

i dunno nah, this game just aint pull me in :(
a game does have a certain amount of time in which it has to pull me into it, if it doesn't then the chances of me playing it again super slim yes :(

like half life, first time i play that i eh reach anywhere with action yet, slow start, i ended up putting down that game for a good while yes, only till i see it real rip up in awards an thing that i give it another try.

i guess this kinda game is just not for me :(

Right...I've logged a couple hours with this one now and I think it's pretty cool...the controls are solid, the graphics are decent...it's no Doom 3 or Far Cry...but it has a nice gritty type feel to it...and of course the sound is right up there, as it uses all the familiar sounds of the Star Wars universe...

Here's the link to the GameSpot review... http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/starwars...tml?tag=mp_2to9
It got an 8.7, which is very good imo.
