HI all.I doing a bit of research here to assist me in a CPU cooling purchase.Post your CPU temps under load & idle and post your location.(USA]Florida etc.,Trinidad,SA]Brazil..whereever you be!)

AMD Athlon 64 2800+ - Stock cooling - Idle:58~61 Celcius Load: 61~67 celcius.
Location: Trinidad

whoa !  those temps are scorching for an A64.. my athlon xp mobile does 41~44 idle and 54~57 load depending on ambient temps .  The cpu is clocked at 2.3ghz , 100 mhz faster than a 3200.  I use a Thermaltake silent boost with stock fan , and artic silver 5 . i only have 2 case fans, both pushing air out the case .

  Trinidad] Arima ..  ambient temps range from 25 at night to 32 in the day .

Your comparing an xp mobile to an a64 cpu?
No wait your comparing an OVERCLOCKED xp mobile to an a64. And if that wasn't bad enough...a different mobo.

a64s have ondie temp diode and thus will read higher than other xps on average. An even that...there is no standard way of calibrating and displaying this temperature value so it will vary for different motherboards.

Thats just some of the variables involved!

In essence this value is almost useless as an indication.



@ cdx2k1 - First we must analyse the true reason...

There are two many variables to use other people's values as what you should get. What is important is why you want to improve cooling. Once cpu / system is stable then you don't need enhanced cooling...at least wrt to stability level.

Thus your reason seems to be just to lower cpu temps...in which case any mid level to high end hsf will do just that.

Synth, cool off (notice in spite of ur harsh treament of Trini who is a spammer sometimes, everyone still posted their readings despite the difference in platform, cpu, etc). Anyways, AXP 2600+ w/ Thermaltake Volcano 9, Artic Silver (cyah rem what #). @ stock FSB  CPU is 42 idle and 45 Full load. @ 2.3GHz (~400MHz OC) 49 idle and up to 54 at full load.

I actually not trying to improve temps.I going watercooling to be able to overclock wihout heat being my problem.Thanks for the info guys.These A64's are weird as hell.

Everyone posted there temps because they wanted to, its there choice. They all kept focussed and did not make any uniformed comment. And just because they all did it does it make it right? Does it make it anymore technically correct? Ignorance is not bliss.

I cannot force enlightenment. If after reading my post and people still don't comprehend then I shall either be forced to continually give "harsh treatment" as you so call it, or simply delete posts as I see fit.

@ cdx2k1 - lowering temps *IS* what your trying to do. What do you think watercooling does if not lower temps? Unless your going for an extreme o/c then water cooling is overkill. Highend air would do almost as good. For that matter even mid end cooling would be significantly better than the amd retail cooling which i assume your currently using.

There is lots more variables to o/cing than just cooling/lowering temps.

Assuming all these temp are indeed valid it still proves my initial point that trini's comment was misleading...either that or most people temps are "scorching for an A64". Especially when you take into consideration such high temps even after using better than retail amd cooling.

@ cdx2k1 - Best you don't believe any of us...Go check AMD Site for WHAT THEY SAY.

i agree with synth that water cooling is a little overkill... a nice copper  cooler and a 92mm/80mm fan will do it .... even with light overclocking .    
   It may not be that cdx2k1's A64 is cooking, possibly his mobo doesn't support 'cool and quiet' which would make his A64  idle at high temps....

the fan points straight down at the graphics card, so the only air going onto the processor is the hot air coming off the video card... .

  That would raise his temp a good bit, especially if he has a big graphics card eg 9800 pro /6800 .    At least 5 C .  And just because  the cooler has heatpipes, doesn't mean its powerful...  
  and also note that  EVERYONE ELSE in the forum reports lower temps , even with stock cooling .   It could be a variety of things... maybe his motherboard isn't reading the temps correctly , or  his chip was just one of the less efficient ones...... its possible as until recently when i flashed my bios my motherboard was reading incorrect voltage, and i actually need 1.625 volts and not 1.575 volts to keep stable .
    cdx2k1 , is 'cool and quiet on' ? what are your case temps and is your mobo running the latest BIOS ?
