hoss, it would have been better to buy a new power supply.

TT$150-$200

400- 450 Watts

Might get a 13- 18 amps on the 12v+ rail for that locally.

well i wouldnt say that yu should let the fear of power limit yu

my uber dell is running a 250 wat supply (i doh know how de ras i didnt notice that before)
and iam running a 5900xt which recommends a 400 watt.

iam not saying that yu shouldnt go to 400, by all means please do.

But this card is worth riding a bike to school and saving dat maxi money to pay for.

Btw, my 5900xt is running like butter but i think i owe it to myself to go to  6600 gt.

Before i got the 5900 i was contemplating putting out for a 6800gt and all sorts of versions of the 6800.
But in the end i think i shall go the budget way and play around with the card till iam happy.

After having so much fun OCing the 5900, the 6600gt should be uber
but hehe ill probably get the asus v999 gt version :).

I have been branded an ATI fanboy at times so I guess my opinion means even more now.

Its the only nvidia card other than a ti4200 to get my approval.

they recommend a generic 400 watt , or a high quality 300/350 watt . Brand name PSUs are more efficient and so can put out more watts than you'd expect they would .
The 6600gt is a monster card, especially after overclocking, you can play COD @ 1600x1200 with AA on , or warcraft with AA on and still get more FPS than your average geforce 2 or crappy 5200 .
i just finished playing a uber smooth game of warcraft III, which i lost to some AI ( didn't play in almost a year ) .
i wouldn't recommend spending 200 on a 6600gt  if you have a 5900xt or a 9800 unless you have money to waste .... its not that much faster for your favourite games, just in doom III / half life 2 .

[ $100 = R 9550 (9500pro even better if you can get it).

$100 - 150 =  R9600 PRO or 5700 XT

$150 - 200 = R9800 PRO / 5900 XT

$200 - $300 = 6600 GT (agp/pci) / R X800 XL (non agp)

fx5200 is THE WORST CARD nvidia EVER MADE.

Well its far more than efficiency...

Its about maximum and continuous output at A CERTAIN TEMPERATURE. PSUs max tend to be rated at 25 degrees or lower. Now you can see the huge problem already. Most people case temps are WAY ABOVE this especially in the tropics. So you already limited to a significant max by default.

Now no  matter how efficient a PSU is, if you run a PSU at max for more than a short while it will over a period of time degrade efficiency and eventually will die.

That is why always get above what your comp uses on average AND take into consideration the actual output you can get on that PSU given the temperature factor.

Course power supplied quality is a whole other matter...

i agree with ya there, things can't even play warcraft smoothly . the 5200 ultra  needs a molex cable and a huge heatsink and STILL sux .  yet everyone is rushing to buy one because it has '128mb of video memory' and 'DX9 support' . the 5600s are pretty bad too , the only good FX cards are the 5900 xt/ ultra and 5700 ultra . thats not counting how slow the FX is in a real world DX9 game ....

In response to the comments to the Geforce FX 5200, I own one right now, the 128MB AGP 8x version and it runs pretty ok. However Doom 3 & alot of other games (Hitman: Contracts inclusive) run at a decent 800x600 at 32 bit colour texture. I don't know if you guys tried pushing it to 1024x768, but at 800x600 it runs ok. Max Payne 2's default setting after I installed it are 1024x768 and 32 bit textures. THe only game to give major lags in Chronicles of Riddic: Escape From Butcher Bay. They reccomend for minnimun an AMD 64. It runs yes, but not very well. The graphics are stunning but FPS ratings take a plunge. I think I clocked at rougly 27.8956 FPS @ an embarassing 640x480 @ 32-bits. Doom 3 ran @ 31.289 FPS when the lights went out & in heavily lit areas dropped to like 20.7856 FPS. The resolution selected was 800x600 @ 32 bits. I already made an order for the Asus K8V-SE Deluxe mobo & an AMD 64 3400 processor. THe only thing left is the graphics card. My choice really was the 6600GT AGP 8x model. Well, I guess we will find out in August

performance on low end cards vary greatly , as Nvidia/ATi leaves the memory configuration to be 'designated by manufacturer' . Some will give you the standard 128bits with 4ns DDR , others will give you 64bits with 6-7ns RAM, the slower models are the really tiny ones you usually see with a fanless heatsink ....
  even a 'good' 5200 can't begin to stack up to a 9550 or 9600 , or even an older 8500 ...

I know I won't rank with the high rollers in the graphics card field, but I mean for a starter, the 5200 is not all that bad I mean. WHen compared with those brand new dells people buy without those fancy graphics cards, I mean, come on! I plan on making upgrades in the August period

It is BAD when you consider you can get better for LESS. A GF4 MX440 / MX4000 is BETTER.

Down here the prices are waaay too high, and most don't know any better.

Last I checked Dell's graphics were better than fx5200s...

Now I am no fan of the 5200 man but synth dell graphics? dell doh have graphics, they use 1ntel integrated or Nv1dia or AT1 so what are u really comparing? and did you'll forget the Hair dryer? 5800Ultra? or has that complete (shooting self in leg) by Nv1dia slipped by you altogether? at least the 5200 is a staple in their low end stable, as opposed to that hot, poor performing (even worse if u factor in price) card that they completely blundered?

i have to big up dell ah little bit. good dells do come with 9800 pros and xt, and 6600gt's beleve it or not.

the only recommendations i can make bout upgrading from a 5200 are
5700's or even better a 5900xt or 9800pro
higher than that
a 6600gt or a little better, a 6800nu

i'd say the best price/performance card is the 6600gt

i say stay away from FX if you are  a gamer....  even the 'fast' cards have horrible DX9 support and performance , thats why nvidia HAD to release a totally new achitechure for the geforce 6 series , while ati just needed to overclock their currant achitecture ...

Dells in trinidad come mainly with 5200s/integ .... i saw one with a 9800 pro and 1gb of RAM but for 14 000 TT !  Dell pcs are good if your not a serious gamer.....  besides their parts fail fast , my grandmothers pc had its power supply fry twice ! my old dell hard drive died once , and even if it does manage to live 5-6 years the retarded case design traps so much dust your pc will cook itself eventually .

Actually, i've seen reviews where the Dimension XPS system beat a comparable Alienware system. As I recall years ago dell was considered a god brand, quality and service wide. That was when compaq was the largest manufacturer of computers in the world. Look how thing have changed. Now Dell is the largest and like compaq are beginning to show signs of mass production short falls. I no longer consider dell a top notch comp maker but rather a mass producing money machine that could care less about the product and consumer and more about profit margins. The XPS systems were gone for a while, but now they're back and they're not bad. Techtv reviewed a XPS, falcon and Alienware and the XPS won out. Imagine that.
