it actually is an athlon xp, with modifications
they are cheap and more powerful than the xp's

but they get raped by the new intel celeron d in most benchmarks.
Your choice, they are both about the same price.

Decent ish  budget processor

more powerful than the lower end XPs, 2500/2600 . But a 3200 will eat it up . Celeron D is alot hotter than it .... and more likely to melt in trini heat .
The chip to go with is the Athlon XP MOBILE PEOPLE!!!! it WILL reach XP3200 speeds AND beyond with . 75 USD for it... , 5 for a warranty, 10 for a worthy cooler,  Less than a sempron 2800 and faster .  All you need is a board with basic o/cing options and your good to go .

Actually those semprons aren't faster than lower end XP's at least not the Bartons and u can clock a 2600 Barton to 2.3GHz. The only sempron that can really throuce the XP's is the 3100+ and thats cause its a downgraded Athlon 64 which btw throuces the Celeron D. I'd say stick with a Barton XP if u going sempron, go 64 and skip the 3100 if yuh going that way.

celeron 240d with fan and heatsink about $127 us same a sempron 3100 with fan and heatsink . in more than half the benchmark that  sermpron wins especially when concerning games . but might as well spend a few more dollars  and get proper a64 cpu :D

Celeron D = Prescot core = idles at 60 degrees  celsius

or didn't you know that ? :P

Celeron D overclocks well though, they  can hit 3ghz - 3.5ghz... and you won't notice much extra heat .

lol but crixx, de man talkin gospel, de prescott is a fireball of a chip.

One of intel hottest to this date, and not in a good sense. lol

The Athlon 64 runs a lot cooler.

I have been impressed with it and would recommend the proc now that the price is falling.

Yo Crix I did mention that the Sempron 3100 is a downgraded A64 AKA its the SAME pin config as the first line of A64 processors. But I guess u just happened to not see that being an 1ntel fanboy and all.

i find the sempron 2500 is slower than the low end athlon xp but it is 333 fsb but it runs at 1.75MHZ ..so the clock speed is slower than an 2500XP which runs at 1.8XMHZ

no hoss, heat is heat.

When you're running a hot processor in your comp it means your cooling solution is critical.

Over the ages both AMD and Intel have had their share of "too hot to hold" processors. It is NEVER a good thing.

For both the mobo and any nearby components.

Cooler = better.

I rem a while back some site did a review of some of the early Athl0ns the last test was to run it without the heatsink, at that time they did a review of the first line of P4's as well without the heatsink.... the Athl0n fizzled after like 5 mins or something.... while the P4 was fine, that was then this is now....
Based on the size of the HEATPIPE cooling solutions that u NEED to properly cool a Presc0tt, i'd imagine the P4 would fizzle in less time than the early Athl0ns

a winny boy

the reason i pointed out that the 3100 is not socket A , is because ALLL the other semprons are socket A and allllll the other semprons SUCK when compared to the celeron D's , so anyone thinking that  gee the 3100 performing so well wow i better go get one, BEST be prepared to change they mobo to run it.
THe 3100 is not comparable to the celeron D's.
3100 would be comparable to the p4's.

U think everybody into overclocking like you? Some of us prefer so stay into warranty specs just so $hit don't happen and it don't crash etc. and we don't have 2 buy another one.
