GATT: Forward ever, backward never?
« on: September 10, 2004, 11:20:30 PM »
This is the first post in the the new "politics" section of GATT.

Something that we have been sorely lacking.

It is to promote intellectual discourse on the governance and direction of the association.

Anyone is welcome to contribute, posts that are off base, spam, etc... will be promptly removed by admins.

The first issue I will like to broach is identifying the many facets of GATT. Some broad "gamer" profiles (casual gamer, hard core sweater, forum fan, GL regular) and identify what they want, what they enjoy and how we have been serving them.

Then more importantly, how better we can serve them and their needs.

On your marks, get set....(gun shot)

this is asking for flame wars, one sided arguments and off topic posts.... mods are gonna be busy :) .

I know of the government as a bunch of corrupt old people who are either to stupid to make the right decisions, too corrupt, or others are holding them back. They ask for advice on telecommunications from the people who own the other 49% of TSTT and expect the right answers ......
They enjoy hijacking the media to try to turn attention away from the main problems and spread propoganda . eg. 'Let the bills pass!' , do you think spending our tax dollars on an advertisement softened up the opposition any? noooo...... but it did make the opposition look like they were especially evil when they opposed the bills.
The government is also either too soft or too corrupt to take proper action eg. the jamaat run the EMA off a quarry, the jamaat have links to known terrorist organisations , the jamaat were responsible for the last coup!!!! giving them our land is NOT ACCEPTABLE!
The government agencies eg. EMA , the one that monitered the monopolies etc. have no teeth . They cannot force TSTT to lower rates or    people to stop slash and burn agriculture on the hillsides .
This generally applies to all parties that passed through office though with a few changes in incompitence and ability between them.

« Reply #7 on: September 11, 2004, 01:04:53 AM »
lol, I will try

better yet, offer up what you understand by it and we will clarify.

Is not just about what I wanna say, it's all about how the gamedom sees itself and how we want to make life better for everyone.

Let me give you an example.

The GL Regular.

A gamer who goes down to Etech everyday after school. He pays $5 an hour to sweat need for speed underground.
What GATT can do for him?

1) Seek to maintain the price for that game session at a reasonable level
2) Encourage the GL owner to keep the latest games available, patches, etc..
3) Encourage the GL owner to upgrade the gaming hardware to improve his experience.

What can he do for GATT?
1) Spread the good news about the membership to his friends and family.
2) Increase patronage to the GLs by encouraging gamers to frequent the location.

nah man, yuh not offtopic at all

That is precisely de kinda talk we need in this section.

GATT not advertised in main stream circles. Except for blurbs in the press by members who work in the press. kayode/shizz/strongy

We discussed doing ads many times but the costs were always prohibitive. Somebody need to win lotto and sponsor us that.

We are advertised on other online sites and trinidad web directories. That is akin to preaching to the choir though.

What other sort of advertising do you suggest?

I'm extremely tired, so if I say anything dumb....then it's the lack of sleep. I don't know about how your place is set up but I would reccommend some good ideas/business models/marketing strategies. Drop me an e-mail with some more info on the place at tech53@hotpop.com
I think that you could beef up your Linux/Unix area a bit more. Or maybe add some sort of administrator area instead. Maybe some howtos....howtos are always good, on any topic, everybody likes howtos.
I may frequent this area more when I am not so tired, and my brain works a little better.

Perhaps it's time to look at different levels of membership, again!
Members (paying) who will reap the benefits associated with being a paying member (discounts for entering tournaments etc.)
Associate Members (non paying) who will have access to the forum (perhaps not full access) but will have to pay full price to participate in tournaments etc.

Again this can be broken down into many different levels and systems of classification.  If the Admins and senior members are willing maybe we can meet and discuss this further.

on the topic of spreading the news of gatt
it has been done by numerous persons
especially with relation to school
yet older members bash us and call us loud mouths and all of that
which really turns us off from enjoying the gaming experience

for example
in hq
there were originally for the most
atleast 20 persons in total who actually visted hq
over the last year
that number has exceeded 100 persons who have actually visted
on average 10 go on a daily basis

us young gatters are the future
and some of us can actually keep up
with the old gatters
but because of all the bashing
we really get fed up
and the gatt community loses members this way

this is a problem that really must be stopped...

DONT HATE THE PLAYER
HATE THE GAME!!!

I remember hearing somthing about that at the last TTCS seminar I attended (in the late 80's).  They were handing out flyers for some gamers association....I don't know if it was GATT in it's previous form....before the split.

big post mangoseed and computerman.

I understand computerman clearly. Like smurf said, the system has been forsaken with the increased membership / to increase membership. Now that our numbers are 1000+ it can be looked at again. To establish or distinguish a hardcore group of gamers from the casual GL gamers. Pros and cons anyone?

seed, could you elaborate?

I have seen this persecution of the "younger generation" and have done my darndest to abate it. Just as you state, I believe you guys are the future and we should do our part to be good role models and provide encouragement rather than negative comments and bashing.

whoa @ late 80s, couldn't be us.

We have not been around that long. Our genesis came in the late 90s.

And for the record, we haven't had any split.

Over the years some bad seed have been put out by various admin for good reason, but nothing more, nothing less.
