it  depends on how much CPU power u are gonna use :
if you are a serious gamer with a high end graphics card eg. 9700/9800 , X-800, 5950 etc. YES
if you render 3-d , edit videos etc. YES
if you have a lowish graphics card eg. FX5600 , 9600,9500, TI4200, 9000,9200 NO
if you plan to play solitaire and surf  the net : NO

make sure to get at least 512 ram if you plan to play HL2  or Doom III

all depends on what u want to do with it any high end operation with encoding , rendering ,video editing ,cad u want to 3000. or if u have a very good gpu like trini said get the 3000 otherwise it just a waste of money for u .money that could be spent on something else

A64's start at around 180US and go on up, i'd say hold off for a lil if you decide to go that way and start with the A64 3500+ (dual channel support). The sempr0ns are either XP's that have less cache or the 3100+ is a retarder A64 (i.2. A32). hold off a lil, or go with the 3000+.

ok sempron and 64 are out for me now ...so i'll go with 3000.....or if i add about $200 i can get 3200 which has 400MHZ FSB.....i am thinking to go with this instead is it worth it?...and where can i get 400MHZ dual channel memory...i am think about getting that also ...and BTW i am going with a soyo dragon 2 kt880 mainboard and either a 9600 pro or a 9800pro (depending on the cost of the 9800 pro) and on antec sonata case 8)

you people are forgetting that the A642800 and the Sempron 3100 are no faster than an athlon XP3000/3200 [ they are cheaper to make though ] If you have a credit card and a motherboard that supports basic o/cing features like FSB changing, voltage , and multipliers your best bet would be to get an athlon XP mobile for 80-90 USD : they are built on the same process as the A64s but are on the barton core, so their clock speeds can reach orbit. You WILL be able to get anything above a 2400 to run at LEAST 2.2ghz [3200] and at most 2.6ghz [3800]  , and its 4-5 degrees cooler than a normal XP at the same clock... so a plain heatsink rated to 3200 will suffice .

 and .. the XP at 2.6 ownz up to A64 3200 :P

I don't agree with TrinireturnIgiveuponthisname, the A642800 will outperform the 3000+ Athl0n and does in most benchs ive seen plus its 64-bit goodness. Next not all bartons are made equal, strongton will agree with me here, he has a 2600+ Barton and it runs HOT even with a Volano 10 and Artic silver thermal compound, so no thought about overclocking there. I have a 2600+ and it will not run stable about 2.07Ghz which is not much of a step up from 1.92GHz and my CPU runs at a cool 43 degrees. Also provided u can get ur 3200+ up to 2.6 Ghz (just short of water cooler or better) the Athl0nXP  can't own a A64 with its ondie memory controller and hyp3rtransport bus, come one guy... seriously coupled with the upcoming PCI express in the nF0rce 4 that will NOT be implemented on XP's.

That aside, I think ur just as well off with the 3000+ instead of the 3200+ cause that 400$ extra is small thing but the +500$ more for the dual channel RAM to match will kill you in cost. Its like 180+ US$ for some good cors@ir XMS paired or K1ngston Hyp3r X 1GB sets. I would know been looking to get that soon.

ok so most likely i'll go with an athlon xp 3000 barton 400MHZ fsb version......but this mobile is kinda have me thinking but i see the fsb is 266 on those ...and i am not really planing to over clock......but when you over clock the mobile to like the speeds of the 3000 ..it still will not perform as the 3000 because the fsb is actually lower...right?...and if i do go with the 3000 barton what is a good fan/heatsink to go with it ..i might buy an oem cpu so i'll need a seperate fan

athlon XP : MO BILE!!!!!!!! people don't READ!

i myself already bought a mobile chip... as soon as i get it in my HANDS and out of TTPOSt i will post my own o/cing results

they are :the Barton but on the more advanced fab process used for the A64s . The chips can make AT LEAST 2.2ghz , and some have been reported to reach 2.6ghz on AIR cooling [ big copper hsf though ] . They are as much as 5 degrees cooler than an athlon XP at the same voltage/clock , and they need ALOT less voltage to reach the same clocks as an XP, decreasing heat output even further .
The only drawbacks are that you need a motherboard with o/cing capabilities just to put it in , unlike Barton chips where you have to o/c the BUS to get higher speeds, the mobiles are multiplier unlocked  , making for even easier o/cs . They are rated at 266fsb but have no trouble running at over 400fsb [AXP 3200 standard ] .

you need any two sticks of ram , with the same speed and preferrably the same make . And u need the board to support it : unless your running a P4 or A64 setup , dual DDR helps only by the tiniest amount [2-3% in benchmarks ]
