You're using XP Home? Left out what version of XP.
Also, what does it need to activate? A serial or just a connection to HP for verication that it's an authentic system or what?
One more thing, when you got the system you didn't get the drivers on cds? They're not suppose to put them on the hard drive because of this exact problem.
Clarify a bit and maybe you can get some more help.

I had to do that like 4 times already :)

Hope that help you

1. get knoppix
2. Boot up in knopix and copy your files/burn them to cd
3. format your drive and excorcise the machine
4. install a decent OS

XP home has more bugs than ME...

OH NO HE DIDN'T!! He did NOT just say what I think I just read there?!? Good grief...how can anyone in their right mind say that XP Home is more buggy than WinMe...yuh just loss any credability whatsoever dey...not only did we think you used to talk sh!te, but now we know is for sure...doh tink you could get any worse nah...but wit you, anyting seems possible oui.

WinMe was the ONLY MS OS that I did not upgrade to, I had played with it for quite a while on other people's machines and stuff and while I liked the direction that MS was pushing the OS in, adding the System Restore and other features, the machines simply weren't as stable as I had become accustomed to with my Win98SE box...so it became the only MS OS that I didn't upgrade to. XP Home is way ahead of WinMe in all categories because it's based on the same core as XP Pro...so wheeeeel and come again....cos you crash and burn on dat one bad bad bad.

That sounds like the symptoms of using the operating system that came with a gateway, dell, IBM etc computer. Initally they tell you to register before 30 days after installation and you can do nothing about it. I believe that the software comes pre registered by the manufacturer of the computer and the operating system only recognises it when you are using the required BIOS chip. Unfortunately there is no remidy know to me for the situation where you get lock out except a reinstallation. If you want your files just (only with XP) just reinstall and leave your current file system in tack. However the system after the installation would operate very unstable and it may crash a couple of times but it should give you enough time to copy them to another partition. After you have backed up you files on a partion other than that of the one the OS uses you may reinstall XP again this time deleting the current file system and of course using a different copy of XP.
Righteousness can only be acheived by one who has good intentions and a non-biased perspective...hence the only alignment for a true paladin is neutral good and not lawful good.
