Dual processors good for gaming?
« on: April 12, 2004, 09:51:43 AM »
Hi all.Does any one have exepreince with Dual Athlon MP's in gaming?I heard it's not as good as a single Athlon XP because of the limitations of the AMD 761 Dual MP chipset.Does any one have benchmarks or comments?

reason it not good they ain't got enough memory bandwidth to do good in games in the dual athlon mp . performace should be 2-4 % better than on equivalent athlon xp single chip. If u going dual opertrons that a different matter :P u will see the difference with them

on bad point if athlon mp does not have the support of memory speed as the athlon xp at bout the same speed the athlon xp chip would have better performace than it

games dont come optimized to run on dual processors
in some instances, the performance is sometimes worse

get a single processor, dont worry bout it too much
for gaming , the single most important thing is the graphics card

ATI currently owns in that respect , full DX9 support and awsome image quality
AA and AF own

9600 pro and up will provide alot of gaming pleasure ...

the next generation of graphics cards will be out within a month or so, sending prices down on current cards and also allowing u the opportunity to "bling out" on de latest badboy

lots of companies make crappy chipsets for athlons, so you never know if its the motherboard of the athlon.

if you can find a good stable dual chipset without to much bus limitation, the 2x athlon would be better under CERTAIN conditions

2 processors means more memoy bandwidth needed, therefore you need fairly fast ram and a southbridge chipset with lots of bandwidth capability

2 processors are only significantly faster if you are running an intensive game ie. battlefield , UT 2004 onslought .

a two proc system should not lag much if it is used as a server and a game machine . Once you have a good stable motherboard chipset you got a monster .

dual processors give only 20% more performance. Add a SATA raid 0, DDR 400 + etc. to get real power

while april 26 it the ati r420 series

aka the Radeon X800 Pro...

Regards the topic, the additional cost of multi-processor boards and the extra processor itself will far outway any performance gains made possible by them. Simply isn't worth it....for gamers anyway.

Games for Windows aren't optimized for dual processors.  Talk done.

to do whatever like what?

You going to alt tab from Unreal 2004 to finish up an Adobe Photoshop illustration?

When you gaming, you gaming.

like rich said, the games aren't designed for it, so the benefit is slim.

Quake3 had MP support, but when you put it on, you realised, the processor wasn't holding you back anyway....the video card was.

Better to save the money for the dual rig and invest in a better video card.

Your games will thank you for it.
