NEO i'm sorry to have to say this but your views IMO are totally naive and I think you really should have prepared properly before writing all that up there . So here's some things for you to take in.

While I understand where you're coming from it still doesnt defeat the fact that you're wrong when you say the violence was overdone. Want me to show you how ?

You seem to be somewhat focused on the scourging so i'll start there
The instrument used for scourging is a short whip called a flagrum or flagellum to which was attached several braided leather thongs of variable lengths. Knots were tied in the ends of each thong, and sheep bone or iron balls were inserted into the knots at the end of each thong. . The person to be scourged is stripped of his clothing and his hands are tied to a post. Roman soldiers repeatedly strike the victim's back, buttocks and legs with their full force causing deep contusions. Lacerations from repeated blows cut into the underlying muscles and rip the overlaying skin of the back to a point where it hangs in ribbons of bleeding flesh. The capillaries and veins were often torn causing intense bleeding and at times leaving the entrails exposed. Even once the victim fainted, if the soldiers could feel a pulse and detect sufficient respiration, the beating would continue. Once the centurion in charge determined that the prisoner is near death, the beating is halted.

The object of the scourging was to weaken the victim to a state of collapse and bring them as near to death as possible without killing them. Many did not survive this punishment and it was given the name "half death." The extent of blood loss may well have determined how long the victim would survive on the cross.

(1 Peter 2:24)  The legionaries having no restraint appear to be in a satanic frenzy, they lash out with the whip full force, again and again across Jesus' shoulders, back, buttocks, and legs. At each stroke of the whip, a painful shudder can be seen as waves of never ending pain shoot through his body. His back is now a mass of livid marks and blue, purple bruises show beneath the skin.

(Deuteronomy 25: 2-3) If the latter deserves stripes the judge shall have him lie down and in his presence receive the number of stripes his guilt deserves. Forty stripes may be given him, but no more; lest, if he were beaten with more stripes than these, your kinsman should be looked upon as disgraced because of the severity of the beating.

It was for this reason the Jews limited the amount of lashes to 39.The Romans however didnt have a set number of lashes.

Now you may ask , if the scourging was that bad , how did he even survive ? It's really simple when you think about it. You don't have to be smart. It's because he HAD to . If he had died during the scourging , then all the prophecies written hundreds of years before his birth would have not been fulfilled , which would defeat the purpose of his coming to save us . Prophecies such as -

(Isaiah 50:6)  I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting.

(Isaiah 52:14)  Even as many were amazed at him - so marred was his look beyond that of man, and his appearance beyond that of mortals

(Isaiah 53:7)  He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth

(Psalm 109:24)  My knees are weak from fasting; And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness

(Isaiah 53:5)  But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.

(Psalm 22:16) For dogs have surrounded me; A band of evildoers has encompassed me; They pierced my hands and my feet.

All of those were written hundreds of years before he was born. Even his cry to God was foretold (Psalm 22 i think it is)

I could go on (and on) , but its not really my style to do the beatdown arguments so I'll stop here.

Oh and NEO ,  just to let  you know , I saw this movie BEFORE all of you people and I have seen the movie many times since. I for one am glad someone had enough testicular fortitude to make a film that gave a semi accurate depiction of the Passion. If you think The Lord's suffering was anything less than what Mel depicted in the film , then you my friend need to open your eyes .

PS and yes i am a christian.

any church is imperfect as its members and leaders are only human

but it is what we make of it, that counts in all things, however it may be, however we may decide

and I thought and still think that the violence wasn't overdone since; as rb said, history will prove otherwise
those who say different are really just speculating, even if they are a religious leader

I think that if we as Gatt chose to ignore religion the consequenses could be rather detrimental
if you don't follow, think about it wisely and then respond

and no I am not a fanatical christian

but I am a member of Youth for Life for all who go to UWI and or heard of us elsewhere
as well as another group (TLM of TnT)

Big man like rb2k2 using my boss phrase "testicular fortitude"?  Understandable, no scene.

{My 2 cents:}

1.  I liked Kayode's pint about Christianity.  At least people arent't as blind as they'd like you to believe.

2.  Sadly, this fact has become a subject debatable.  However, Jesus "cross" that he was forced to carry and die upon was really a stake.  Romans used long wooden stakes, trees in some translations for reference, for execution.

Looks like Mel, too, should have done his research instead of appealing to the masses.  But like it was said before, it's just a movie, it happens to be about Jesus Christ, but it's not the only one and there'll probably be more to come.

{/My 2 cents:}

yeah but you can't really do the movie without a cross

that would be like a music video without the music

Not animosity.....just some well long ovedue bible study with relation to the Passion of Christ movie. About time we had some healthy debate and discussion on this topic. This would not have likely happened had their been no movie to debate on. Thanks to it, however, more ppl are reading the gospel and researching the crucifixion, and the message of God that Jesus died for us is getting out to everyone.

Excellent. Well done mel gibson.

I have come to the conclusion that I don't think that debating christianity or more specifically RCatholisim is somthing that we as GATTers should delve into too far as the conflicts can be quite heated and there is always a danger with playing with concepts that not everyone here may totally understand

however that is not to say that religion on the whole, whichever it may be, should be left out of Gatt
but we must be cautious as to what we say when it comes to such a dangerous topic

as it is we haven't reached that point yet, I think
but I believe that it could happen with this thread

if it gets out of hand

Very Mature of you to say so Rommel.

But i believe we are all mature enough (oh well most of us are) to have some healthy debate and discussion about Religion, no matter how delicate or taboo the subject may appear. As long as we respect eachother's right to hold opinions and maintain our temperance at the fact that some ppl may be igorant of some issues and thus while speaking to the extent of their knowledge may be uttering absolute foolishness. That is where we come in. We are here to uplift and educate those who don't know.

And if ppl are being arses about it, that's why we have mods. :-)

my main fear is to not accidentally lead people on a wrong theological and philisophical path

or to see such done by others

but for the limits of this medium, I guess you are right Smurf, as it isn't as easy to do such....................
