After Brian Lara won the toss and put South Africa in, Smith and Gibbs both scored centuries and made West Indies pay for some more wayward bowling and shoddy fielding. RECORD BREAKING KALLIS TURNS SCREWS ON WINDIES

CENTURION -- Jacques Kallis wrote his name into the record books of South African batsmanship as the hosts piled up another massive total against West Indies on the second day of the fourth and final Test at SuperSport Park on Saturday.
 
The 28-year-old right-hander became the first from his country to score hundreds in four consecutive Tests, finishing unbeaten on 130 and propelling his team to 604 for six declared in the first innings.
 
With their first task being to get 405 to avoid the follow-on, the visitors’ openers, Chris Gayle and Daren Ganga, had no hesitation in accepting the umpires’ offer to go off for bad light after five overs of their reply with the score at seven without loss.
 
Taking over the role of senior batsman after Herschelle Gibbs fell to the part-time leg-spin of Ramnaresh Sarwan for 192 half-an-hour after lunch, Kallis played with confidence and correctness in compiling a 15th Test century that bore an air of inevitability about it given his already huge impact in this series.
 
With the possibility that he may still play one more innings -- depending on the strength of the West Indies response -- the powerfully built Kallis has now amassed 712 runs at an average of 178 from six innings.
 
Having gone through most of the previous year without registering a Test hundred, Kallis has struck a rich vein of form against a Caribbean side lacking in the necessary discipline in bowling and fielding to consistently overcome such a class player.
 
Yet he readily acknowledged that the overall strength of the batting line-up has eased some of the burden off his shoulders.
  “It probably made it a bit easier for me,” he said at the post-play news conference.
  “Coming in once you’ve got 300 runs already on the board means that there is a lot less pressure,” said Kallis, who came to the crease just before lunch with the score at 373 for two after Jacques Rudolph was bowled for 37 by a full-length delivery by fast bowler Fidel Edwards.
  “But you still have to score your runs. I’m really proud of what I’ve done and it’s certainly something I’m going to remember for a long time.”
 
As so often happens, West Indies showed more discipline the morning after being belted around the field, but even with the greater effort, South Africa were already in such firm control at the overnight position of 302 for one that there was little Brian Lara could do to stop the home team grinding on to their second total of over 600 in the series.
 
The advent of the second new ball actually accelerated the scoring with Rudolph, on his home ground, overshadowing Gibbs with a succession of boundaries before his demise.
 
Gibbs was obviously keen on going on to another Test double-century, having resumed on 139. But the temptations offered by Sarwan proved too much as he slashed at a short delivery from the West Indies vice-captain and Ganga held a good catch
falling to his right at backward point with Gibbs eight runs short of the
milestone.
 
Sarwan, whose bowling has taken on increasing importance during the series, struck again when Gary Kirsten, after hoisting a six over midwicket, hit a low full toss back to the bowler in the same over to depart for 13 with South Africa at 446 for four.
 
At the other end, Kallis remained massively solid and composed, gathering his runs effortlessly in an 86-run, fifth-wicket partnership with another home player, Neil McKenzie, who delighted a crowd of over 14,000 before falling for 40 as he edged a
delivery from Mervyn Dillon to Lara at first slip, giving the fast bowler his first wicket on his return to the side after bein g dropped for the third Test in Cape Town.
 
Dwayne Smith impressed with his medium-pacers, achieving movement through
the air and off the pitch, and earning his first Test wicket when Mark Boucher hooked a short ball to Edwards at long leg.
 
But by then the anticipation was building towards Kallis’ hundred and, while he was
frustrated briefly in the 90s by bowling that was very wide of the off-stump, he eventually slashed a delivery from Edwards to the backward point boundary to make history with his ninth four.
 
He had also struck a six on the way to a hundred, and then given instructions to
accelerate, plundered five more boundaries before the declaration came, leaving the West Indies openers with a brief testing period to the close of play.
 
It was, however, always likely that that the heavy overcast conditions that prevailed throughout the day would have prevented the scheduled 13 overs from being bowled, and West Indies enter the third day with all 10 first innings wickets standing knowing that Sunday’s play is likely to determine whether they will end the series with honour or endure more embarrassment.
