Do empty Barrels make the most noise?
« on: December 03, 2003, 12:02:20 PM »
I have noticed a certain trend emerging in gatt, and i wish to brook some discussion on it.

From what i have seen in many GL's it appears that ppl who are loud in their gaming *those who shout insults and curses while celebrating every petty victory with a scream* often perform alot worse than ppl who are quiet in their gaming *you don't even know they are there till the end*.  It should be noted that this does not include shouting commands but is limited to verbal expressions of victory and defeat. This phenomena is certainly not absolute and applicable to every case, but it is certainly widespread. Indeed, this hypothesis seems to be supported when comparing the tops gamers in gatt with the volume the exhibit while playing.
Top ranked gamers in FPS such as MOHAA, Ravenshield, call of duty and Quake III are often to entranced with the game to even make a whisper. Shizz & IYMC as well as Rb and most of FOAK illustrate this fact well, for their silence is often followed by their victory. In the world of strats, the killer combo of dest and scorp, in games such as C&C generals, Warcraft III etc, show that the killing blow comes not from cry of battle, but from A bomb than killed all those who could have heard it.
While i do not suggest that behaviour of these gamers is equvalent to that of corpses, i do maintain that the level of noise coming from the victors is minimal when compared to the vanquished.

but i would like to hear your thoughts on the matter....

Nobody wants to play against a stiffened corpse.  While I would not advocate the use of cursing, little noises in between matchplay can add a feeling to the sweat.

To me this is better than having an intesely silent GL when some serious sweat is going on.  It livens the place up somewhat, but as with all things, moderation is key.

my view is that when playing against people you respect and have fun with, the talk does help, once they don't overdo it...

SnS ghetto men bawling, now that jus annoying, cuz they doin it just because they can...

I would understand some comments if is a beef between two sides, but men bawling dey life out over a meaningless DM game...

Also, why don't we mention those times where ppl make big noise on the forums and in real life, they disappoint with their absence or lack of skill?  A few names come to mind immediately.

i was speaking of total silence in a sweat....that is unwanted and impossible. I was talking about fellahs from clans in gatt who you swear possessed only a vocabulary of expletives...eg:

"Aye dread! U see that shot dread! pow! in yur arse!!! what's my name? eh? whats my name? BWTF! F*** U, HOW d F*** i dead? what d mudder f****n kinda ting this iz? F*** u (mentions someone's name) I go rip us yuh C*** now!"

THis exert is from a sweat i went to recently and it came from a well known GATT member. It was uttered in a shouting voice every minute and similar noise was heard from his clanmates. I believe ppl like this should stay in SnS where they belong.

Freedom of speech is a bi......... never mind.  lmao

Set, I'm not dwelling on things like that.  We all have lives outside of gaming.  There are other instances which I could refer to when someone is challenged, the challengee(for want of a better word) ducks out, and then comes on the forums strong blabbing about this level of "skill" they possess as if nothing happened.

*stays silent for a few moments to demonstrate skill*  :P

Smurf's observations arn't with games alone, but anyting competitive in life.  The better ones tend to contain themselves because either winning the game means nothing to them because they're destined to play better people, or it means too much to them so they dont hype up themselves to because there's a chance of disappointment.

And some players might know more than others and might be better than others, but don't have the time to play.

Now here is someone who is making sense, although i wish that this thread included posts. Now i am guessing that SnS is sip n' surf? Well any way, i could not agree more with the language there, and the entire atmosphere. Went there once, I am never going back.
Any way, my beef is with some of the folk who think a snappy comeback, or a clever quip must hold terible language and have two lines such as " you real slow dred, he he, real slow" or some other such rubbish. Sometimes i wish that some folk thought before they opened their huge maws. I agree that empty barrels do make the most noise.

The only way you have silence in a sweat, is if there is money or reputation at stake. All you hear is heated whispers.
And when alot of people make noise, is usually for kicks, just for the sake of making noise. Not for boasting.

only time u should hear noise is in a TDM when yuh goin on the line in a tourney...like how team butters was psyching up each other while the game going, and encouraging the team as the game was going on, without directing a single obscene comment to the other team...
