RE: {GATT} A more pressing TSTT question...
« on: June 30, 2004, 11:28:00 PM »
It looks to me like the 23cents unlimited will definitely be the first thing
to go. Yanking out that simple plan will absolutely KILL the dial-up ISP
competition. I could live with a 40c/call flat fee, or maybe even 50c.

Even in Grenada, local calls are FREE. Land line to land line = $0.00 per
call.

Subject: {GATT} A more pressing TSTT question...

So exactly how much does TSTT plan to increase the domestic rates by?

I mean, thank God and everything for the halved overseas rates, seeing as I
and so many other people spend hours everyday speaking to people in foreign
countries, but how much of the "cost recovery" will fall on my shoulders?

In fact, shit...if TSTT had cut rates as far back as three years ago it
could have cut my overseas bill by 50%!

Over the last three years I would have saved 50% of $0!!!! Oh
Father...imagine what I'll be saving now!

Btw...why doesn't TSTT introduce plans like those foreign companies?

For instance, I only spend significant time on the phone with one person who
lives in Barataria, and she only spends time on the phone with me. I'd
gladly sign up for one of those "frequently-called" plans even if it meant
paying a flat rate or paying extra on normal calls.

Sorry if the overseas cut didnt benefit u, but it did for me lil bit.
I think de 'cost recovery' will mainly come by way of staff cuts. so doh
fraid too much for de local call ting. besides, yuh mobile costs gone down
so start giving dat more focus and u may jus be able to operate more
economical on yuh mobile as compared to yuh wireline.

Maybe if foreigners (non-nationals or white ppl) were running tstt and/or it
weren't gov't owned, u'd have what those foreign companies have by now. or
den again, u still may not have gotten it so dat we will forever be a
developing country........

Mobile costs? Yuh mean the $20 I spend on a Liberty Card every 2-3 months?
Fuh some reason I doh think it will benefit me much. Just a hunch.

The backlash that will take place when people get viable alternatives will
bring TSTT to its knees.

No offense to you or any TSTT workers. :(

I just vex. sigh.

I highly doubt that land line charges will remain at this level.
those charges - along with the monthly rental fees - have been
ridiculously low anyhow.

same thing happened with our monopolistic telephone company some couple
years ago .. when they introduced
competition, long distance dropped like 200 or 300 % while local calls
went up.

I feel that long distance and cellphone charges will go down further as
soon as they introduce competition.
you won't see any competition in the regular telecommunications business
though, as tstt owns
the whole infrastructure. competitors would either have to rent access
to lines or build their own
system - both options don't seem viable to me as the customer base is
too small.

besides.. I don't think foreigners would've run tstt differently - they
turned in a pretty hefty profit after all,
while running on a dated and crumbling infrastructure.
but ppl here seem to be able to swallow a lot - I remember that we had
weekly internet boycotts running
(with millions participating) to pressure the company in dropping
prices. do the same here with a couple
thousand cell or dial-up users and tstt will feel the heat.

I wish there would be alternatives to tstt's adsl internet access. I
mean.. look at it, it's 3 times faster than dialup -
running at dual channel isdn speed. the least I would've expected, would
be something like 384 k or 512k down for the basic package
@ 220 TT$ max. /month.

Land lines could go the way of the dodo if EDGE becomes readily available
and cheap.

Slow tail gprs won't appeal to much but this faster variant could buss down
those poles.

Digicell bringing edge?
