Best Way to configure IDE Devices?
«
on:
May 28, 2004, 11:41:23 PM »
Is there a preferred way to configure these 4 IDE devices?
ATA133 HDD
ATA33 DVD
ATA33 CDRW
ATA33 DVD+RW
the system was configured as
Primary Master - ATA133 HDD
Secondary Master - ATA33 DV-DRom
Secondary Slave - ATA33 CDRW
How best do i ADD the DVD+RW to the mix? i do not want to remove disconnect any of the other drives.

Umm...
Put the DVD-ROM as the primary slave
Secondary master = DVD+RW
Secondary Slave = CD-RW
I don't think anyone here would disagree with that one much

I agree, it's sensible to put it up as follows:
Primary Master ATA133 HDD
Primary Slave ATA33 DVD
Secondary Master ATA33 DVD+RW
Secondary Slave ATA33 CDRW

If you have extra ATA133 RAID connectors then put the HDD on the RAId connectors but check your mobo manufacturer's site for info first! Don't jus slap it on>you might lose you data when it creates an array. You can then put the DVD+RW on a channel by itself so when u ripping and burning between burners (CD or DVD) it'll run smooth..that's what I would do.

I'd disconnect the DVD. If you put the DVD on the same channel as the HD, you greatly reduce the HD throughput. Something to do with the channel speed defaulting to the speed of the slowest peripheral.
That used to be the case in the olden days. When I'm building, my CD drives are NEVER on the same channel as the hard drives.
Might have changed now, I don't know.

that may be so but why are you putting 3 optical drives in anyway?
what possible gain is there in doing that?
i with rich. optical and hd on same channel is just...wrong. old skool.

Personally, I would have taken out the CD-RW on the whole, cuz most DVD burners currently have CD-RW capabilities, and decent enough speeds as is (i.e. 40x24x40 speeds)
Thus, I would have taken off the CD-RW, and put the DVD-ROM on the secondary slave, but then he did specify non-disconnetion of any drive, so I suggested keeping in mind...
I normally leave my Primary slave open for a 2nd HD if need be for temp. measures

lol...
And those drives come with a VERY LOVELY price premium now, don't u think?
I'll be happy with just swapping in an internal 80GB hard drive, compared to the prices for USB/ethernet drives
