"It's official, you need an Nvidia card to get the most out of Id's Doom 3 while you also have to possess an ATI board if you want to enjoy Valve's Half-Life 2 to the full.
Nvidia has secured Id's coveted "recommended for Doom 3" logo for its GeForce FX family of graphics processing units.

For those of you worried about what this recommendation means in practical terms, we are about to reveal its exact significance, pay attention. All new GFX cards will carry a large sticker confirming this recommendation while even more importantly, when the game is released it will have an Nvidia sticker on its box and will most probably feature Nvidia's Way it's meant to be played little trailer when loading. Even though these are shocking changes and extremely important for all gamers, we also want to include Nvidia's official statement which follows:

lies lies and more lies......
my 8500 LE 128mb, and a PIII gets 30-40 FPS in the bathroom map [tiny compared to the others] and there are 3-4 monsters onscreen.....
you don't NEED a next gen card to play D3.... but you DO need RAAAM.... the thing loves it.... it ate up all 256mb of my ram... 600mb of virtual ram and i had Ctrl-Alt-Del EVERYTHING and run the game from task manager

I *seriously* doubt that you would have an enjoyable experience with D3 using a 9000...my gut feeling is that even the vastly more capable 9500 series may have to turn off quite a few of the bells and whistles...sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

the 9000 pro is an 8500 with 128 bit ram interface instead of 256. the technology is the same.... and the people at iD RECOMMENDED the 8500 as a budget D3 card ABOVE the geforce 3, the geforce 4 TI the geforce 4 MX and the geforce FX 5200 non ultra . The 9000 pro has ALL The technology available [ pixel shaders, dot 3 bump mapping, multi texturing] to get the full experience... you will not be able to play it AS FAST as the next gen 100USD + Geforce FX but it will look just as good .

I wanna play HL2 more than D3 so I think my 9600XT will be more than adequate to play them both, but I wanna get more graphical satisfaction out of HL2. As long as I'm able to get around 50-60fps in D3 I'm satisfied, 40 would be satisfying as well. I don't need all the effects to be on, I just wanna play it through just to say I played it.

take some advice.....
wait till a game FORCES you to upgrade in order to play it.... save up till then. The HW by then will be much faster and the currant hardware will be cheeeeep

That's honestly the best thing I've ever seen you say...sound advice imo. The longer you wait, the cheaper it will get...to a point of course...so hold out as long as you can, with what you have, and save up in the meantime so you can get that great card, at a great price, when you need it.
