Although AGP is destined to be phased out and replaced by PCI-Express, it will still be around for quite a while I think, prolly at least another year or so. People simply have invested quite a bit in AGP to suddenly drop it all and go PCI-X.

lol...I think there would be a transition phase like how there was between PCI and ISA, but nowhere near the length of time before that transition is complete...after all, the dependency on AGP is nowhere the level that is present compared to the usage of ISA slots....

AGP will still be around, as many ppl IMO would wait for the designers to iron out any possible bugs with the design completely, so don't expect AGP to just disappear just yet...

I think there would just be a stage where they might offer both ports, or even keep them as a possibility for usage of multiple video cards :)

yes.... this year in fact.. the companies have already made AGP free boards for the new generations of P4s and A64s

its just a subterfuge to get people to buy new boards.... we don't really need AGP for graphics or sound cards..

though if you use a card to RAID high speed harddrives together, PCI X may speed it up.

don't buy Motherboard PCI-X now... AGP cards will still be made for a long time in  the forseeable future and by then it will be cheaper.

agp life span will last another 2-3 years from now by then pci-express would have taken over

I believe that they would still manufacture motherboards with the AGP slots with the PCI express so am not too worried at the moment

The PCI Express Graphics Port, replacing the AGP Port, will have a 4GB/second transfer rate in its initial configuration

big numbers make alot of people go gagaaa

ie. a fellow techie bought a 5200 because it could do 100 million vertices a second.. twice as much as his MX440.. therefore he though it meant 2x speed... he bought it... 20% increase in speed....

the bus is only a TINY part of the big picture..  the bus is VERY rarely maxed out by normal data flowing to the card, what maxes it out is when the card RUNS OUT OF RAM and has to use system ram, then has to have te data GO BACK to it... and since the advent of 128mb cards.. THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED.

AGP 4x : 1 GB/s
AGP 8x : 2 GB/s
PCI-X    : 4 GB/S

so? agp 4x plays games only 2% slower than 8x, PCI-X won't give much of a speed increase.

when the day comes that GPUS start using system ram alot.. it will help.. and that day is not now

pci express is not mostly for graphics card it more for other perphiera since it double normal pci bandwidth . better hd , better sound cards and so forth

such specs for performance is really not required at this point...

I think such an upgrade would only be forced by those that need a newer OS....Longhorn anyone???

I mean, anyone see the kind of system that is for Longhorn?!?!

Quote from Billy boy himself...

"PCs will have 4GHz to 6GHz processors, more than 2GB of memory, at least a terabyte of storage, and graphics accelerators three times more powerful than those offered by ATI and Nvidia today..."

WTF?!?!
