What about the GForce4MX440
« Reply #20 on: September 23, 2003, 11:10:52 AM »
Once upon a time,

Matrox made the fastest graphics card.

Then 3Dfx made the fastest graphics cards

Then Nvidia made the fastest graphics cards

Today we have both Nvidia and ATI going neck and neck. ATI being the underdog, since for the past three years they have been getting serious lixxx from Nvidia in the video card department. This is great, because it keeps the prices down.

The difference between the two is negligible in 99% of todays games.

As a test, we will install an ATI 9600 and a FX 5600 in similary configured machines, fire up a game of Savage and see who can spot the difference without knowing which card is in which machine.

They won't be able to tell.

That's what really matters, that you can get a kick ass graphics card for a reasonable price to play your games.

well the thing is, it is an ok card, a cheap card, and available. it is not going to give you much more frames than a geforce2mx, but the ddr does help a little. It would be nice to hae a radeon 9600, but vendors just dont buy low-end recent ati cards, so if you cheap , you have no choice. sure i would love a ti4800 but its just to expensive.

local vendors just have no taste in hardware.

More 3d marks = better .
The radeon 8500 gets 2x the 3d marks therfore it is 2x the speed . If anyone selling geforce FX [ anything less than 5600] at 1200 please tell them dat dey do know nutting bout hardware and to hire you to buy PROPER ones .
DE MX 440 is faster than the FX 5200 for all non DX9 games . I still can run DX9 games but at like 5% less speed . I still would go wit de Radeons because of de features [ my radeon makes HAlf Life non-blocky ] and ATI OWNZ~!

Once overclocked it can reach 9700 Pro speeds , at 100 dollars less... GO FOR IT

dammit.. only read page one.. alyuh have to make the page numbers more noticable .
The average person will not be able to tell the diffence. But de xpereinced techie will spot the diffence immeadiatly [ 9600 have better colour quality, higher poly models , more FPS , 5600 will have better pixel shader ] .
What is annoying is dat Nvidia making everybody tink dat you need a DX9 card to play a DX9 game.. not so. Yuh must buy yuh hardware online.... get a credit card and skybox, you will save more dan enuf money to make up for dem . You can get a TI 4200 [ 64 mb wit only VGA out ] for 550 and a radeon 8500 for 480-500 .
 Do a little research at www.tomshardware.com and www.pricewatch.com b4 buying .

true true. Most people will see 128mb and go bebe . Nvidia selealed its DOOM [ III ] when it took so long to release the 5800. And when the 5800 was released it was a failure, the 9700 was just as fast and the 9800 was lightyears ahead . They took another 3 months to get out the 5900 [ a 5800 with 256 bit bus and shadow culling for DOOM ] which is just barely better than the 5900 [ except for DOOM ] .
As one techie said " when you knock down the deer you gotta run back over it a couple times to put it out of its misery " . When the 9900 comes out the heavens will open and FPS will rain for all to reach .
Go for the old high end cards not the new cheap clones . The 8500 used to be the fastest there was.... its only $15 more than the 5200 and the MX 440 yet 2x the speed . A geforce 3 TI 200 is just as good [ if you can find one ] and can o/c to demonic speeds

The Geforce4 Mx 440 is the video card in all the computers at GATT HQ and Euro+

You can play games there and judge for yourself whether the card is doing a good job or not.

My personal opinion is that it is a great card for the price. It runs every game we have thrown at it to date. Bar none.

If I had $500 to spend on a Graphics Card I would buy: Geforce4
MX 440 64MB DDR

If I had $1000 to spend on a Graphics Card I would buy: Geforce4 TI 4200 128MB DDR

What is your budget?

I beg to differ for ~ 500 get a 8500/9100. Much better value.

WRONG! 2x 3dmarks DO NOT EQUATE to 2x performance (fps & image quality) in a specific game! It may be more ..it may be less.

While a r8500 would be on average 2x overall in actual games its wrong to assume 3dmarks equate to direct fps correlation in any given game!

5200fx is crap...utter waste. Better off giving up dx9 in favor of dx8 mode.

The Synth has spoken.

For $500 you can get a geforce3 ti200 or a radeon 8500. I would say that both are literally twice the gaming cards that mx440 is...

Dammit people we at DirectX 9!!! the MX440 is not even DirectX 8 compliant... to reccomend this card to any gamer is a sin!

Both 8500 and ti200 are directX8, both have good image quality and both have decent overclocking... in fact if you get you hands on a Gainward Golden sample Ti200 you can overclock that card effortlesslt to geforce3 ti500 levels (ah card that those in the know will tell you is oly about 10% slower than the geforce4 ti4200)

In other words: Don not buy the Geforce4 MX440!!!

good for you androsovic

That pine was a temporary install because some Jack arse stole the Geforce4 MX440 that was in the machine.

All of the machines run Geforce4 MX440 cards.

The performance speaks for itself. Gamers have been sweating merrily on these machines. They have been the workhorses of GATT for many months now and have served us well.

I am playing Savage @ HQ with a Geforce4 MX 440, which scores 5000 3dmark on average with our machine configurations. Savage is a game that came out 2 weeks ago people and it rocks hard! Easily the best multiplayer gaming experience on the planet today.

This card will serve you well and it is readily available for cheap. Around $400.

No hassle, no specialist requirements, no drama. Just walk in, pick up and play.

People can argue that if you say beetlejuice 3 times and telepot to taiwan, you can pick up a Geforce FX 5900 for TT$600.00 from a street hustler on Mao Feng Street. Save yourself the trouble, if you are on a tight budget, you will not be dissapointed with an investment in an Nvidia GF4 440 64MB DDR.

The GL's weren't.

Don't strain your brain.

If you win cashpot, then get yourself both the FX 5900 256mb ultra and an ATI 9800 and give everyone a case of graphics card envy.

who leave de man alone wit a computer long enuf for him to remove de card???  DX7, 8 and 9 compatibility is noting.... you can run any DX once you got hardware T&L . I used to run DX8.1 and 9 games on my DX6 TNT2 . And the MX440 has much better image quality than the FX 5200, the FX 5200 looks like dirt [ literally, all colours are browny black ] on DX8 .  DX9 compatibility means that it runs faster on DX9 than a DX8 card of the same speed .  And 3d marks usually co relate to mean 15% more performance in games than the number tells you .

Your games look better and run better with Dx9 and DX8, Maybe we hardly seeing DX9 games, but ALL the games we play now are DirectX 8 or newer. You can definately see the difference in UT2003. Midnight club2 uses directX9 !!! And you actually see the difference (I've seen it running on a ti4200 and a Radeon9600pro)

My gripe with the MX440 is not that it can't play directX7 games, as it well can... My problem is there are far superior cards in that price range... if there was no gf3 ti200 and radeon8500 I would tell you buy a MX440... but these cards exist, so don't buy a MX440!!!!
