Great board, but make sure to get the Deluxe version so you can put in your own gfx card...

That's a worthy alternative...maybe the A7V8X would be a nice alternative...or...if you don't need the firewire ports and a couple less USB ports, the A7V8X-X board might be worth looking at...

It depends on what you want to do.

If it's a server, I'd say that you put in the cheapest videocard you can find, and max out the hard drive and memory.  I'm pretty sure that there is little difference in speed above 2200+ XP.  And no significant difference in Via mobos above KT333.

Gaming, well, go for the nForce 2 and the best combination of 2700/3200 memory/fast HD/CPU you can get.

General desktop, any desktop processor is Good Enough.

You can save some money buying an epox motherboard... very solid... less trouble than that asus if you ask me...

Nforce2 is the way to go...

also do you need sound/lan/sieral ATA etc?

good board, onboard sound etc. Get a nice radeon 9600 pro on it and a athlonXP 2500+ . GFX is a waste of time, dey drivers getting more buggy dan ATI .  Maybe 512mb ddr 333 in dual channel .

The Asus Nforce2 board, the A7N8X is a good board.
You don't need the deluxe version, the basic will work just fine.
You will get onboard network and sound, so all you'll need to spend money on after that is a solid video card.

Cost about $1000

If your budget is tight you can get a Biostar K7VIG-D
This board also has sound and lan onboard, as well as video.
Costs half the price of the nforce2, only $500

The best part of all, we tested this board against an nforce2 and they performed within 5% of each other in 3dmark2001. The definitive gamers benchmark.

So if you're looking to get a hot game machine, you're better off saving the $500 and getting the Biostar board and using that extra money to get a Geforce4 TI 4200 128MB instead of say a Geforce4 440 64MB.

The TI 4200 will double your performance in games.

Getting the nforce2 won't make a difference that will be discernable by the human eye. Just about 5% improvement.

He may want/need Sound Storm... that alone is worth the extra cost of the Deluxe..

Ah mean, sound quality nearly on par with an Audigy2 is nothing to sneeze at... not to mention it faster in games than the Audigy2!

EP-8RGA+ (with on-board GFx)
EP-8RDA3+ (with serial ATA)

Both to my knowledge use sound storm... (that's good btw)

And for de last F-in time!!! - Yuh need MC lan? MC Sound? And MC Serial ATA?
