Just askin since i have a friend who frustrated over d issue

he is a preety talented artist that had to export to go into his field of none other than

GAME design

but i was askin if n e one here is interested in this field, do you think it will be possible for people in trinidad to start a graphical seelin point ? Do you think we will always fail ?

I remember a post about an anime in trinidad

Do you think if it were made it would get air time ? would the production cost cut up the artists paycheck ?

Sorry to say but this linked with me sayin gatt have to advertise.. If people come under gatt as a graphic designer aka as part of a firm over an individual it makes shit easier..

in other words if fellas of d same interest in gatt start to push they talant under gatt for paper and make GATT d name instead of one man then they could go far ..

but other than that i was askin who tryin too like who think it have a way out who think it hopeless and why

Well if anyone here is lookin for a job as one go ahead I am not i have a friend who is and went to new york to study all i wanted to know is if it is tough And you have answered that it isnt hard to start up but is it that businesses are demanding such services heavily or scarcely is it that u can make a decent wage..

you have answered my question and i am thankful I just dont want people to feel bad to inform me of their personal tribulations. If anyone is thinking about it I understand what u are saying but if is like me just lookin for information i cannot understand where u comin from with d angry tone BUT for those who are considerin this area of employment he has a good point past the GRRR!!!!!

Some people that call themselves designers arent really what they think they are.

As we all know the art field in Trinidad is a disgrace. You must go away to get proper/good training. Here...hah... well there's UWI and John D. Woo big deal. Either you have to be uber talented (yet still need training) and or have a nice fat bank account.

Game design. Dear God go to Savannah College. Please. There are other great schools as well. I believe in education primarily.

Graphic design company? Hm. I am displeased with what's coming out of the million and 2 companies locally. Boring. Graphic artists are a dime a dozen now. My advice is toget into something you honestly love and the money will come. Fast money is one thing but quality is a whole other ball game.

The fabulous talent we have is being put to waste - no wonder they must get out. Even after a degree you're definitely not guaranteed a job here.
1. They won't pay
2. They will use your talented punkass
3. They have no real resources

There's no infrastructure, barely any consideration given for artists of any kind - especially in an advanced computer design field.
So there you go. You're better off outside unless you have the resources to efficiently run a business here, you're screwed.

Blah okay rant over.

ok time to add my two cents :)

perhaps gatt should have a classifieds section where people can enlist and talent can be found. sometimes a hobbyist might pass through and need an artist, maybe someone may need signs or business cards... and of course there will be spam --> local art competitions, exhibitions etc. of course for this to work some sort of reputation has to be built up and probably some online portfolios etc. on that note why not start some sort of association locally and put together a forum and the like? i love voluntering for stuff like this but i always end up having no time...

there is a lot of talent in T+T but i think the consumers' attitude is the problem :(

also i dont agree with this start your own bizness thing. that waters down the field. look at how many people doing repairs for PC now. how many are specialists? look at people doing binding and printing etc... how many of them can we give 5 stars to?

i cant give much advice to graphic artists here (i myself am a wannabe -- i am the programmer who thinks he can design... the new breed of graphic artists :P) the guy earlier has a point -- we have to be multiskilled these days. make money where we can and use talent/passion for stress relief and make $$$ on the side if we can.

i wish you all the luck man
and laertes -- be nice, the man came here seeking help not a clout up :(

Craptastic small businesses are dime a dozen. That doesn't mean someone can't get out there and make a big splash! If there are so many places and they doing chupidness, get out there and produce some real quality stuff. Look for other people who are also interested in the field and get together with them, pool talents.

Graphic design is currently in a very poor situation in this country, yet they're needed at every turn. Print production, advertising, web design, you name it! There's 2 options to take. One is to lie back and justa ccept the crappy situation as it is, the other is to get up and make your dreams a reality. It's not impossible u know. Difficult, but not impossible.

If you love graphic design so much and you know you have talent, make yourself the leader in the field instead of falling by the wayside.

Funny you should mention this.

There is a small startup company attempting to publish comic books locally.

From my best understanding, it will cost $12 to for each copy.

So that is $12,000 to get about 1000 copies out and on the shelves.

They retail in Trinidad for $25 a piece. So you stand to get a gross return of $24,000.

The publishers will take $6 for each sold at worst, so that works up to $6000.00 for 'em.

Total Costs
$12,000 (cost price of comic book)
$6000 (Publishers Cut)

Gross Income
$24,000 (sales of 1000 comic books)

Net Income
$6000

Not a whole lot of money, considering that amount of work involved and the time it might take to sell 1000 comic books in Trinidad.

It's good information though, maybe useful to someone.

Whups folks.

Touya here, speaking from the US of A.

Okay, so maybe I'm not the BEST person to talk about art based jobs in Trinidad seeing as I LEFT Trinidad to pursue my career, but I STARTED my business in Trinidad.

Let's not forget, we have the internet.

I make a pretty good living per month selling auctions for artwork and commissions on Furbid. As we speak right now I'm photoshopping up a peice I got paid $56 for and it took me just about 4 hours of work.

Just set up a paypal account and have a way to transfer the money to yourself. Simple.

This is the age of the internet, geographical location means nothing anymore.

And if possible, sell to Americans *whisper* they'll buy ANYTHING.
