To the overclockers
« on: May 03, 2005, 02:15:32 PM »
Hi all.I've been a members of www.extremeoverclocking.com for a little while. It's a very interesting site and has practically all the info and help you'd need to overclock or just general system help/problems.It spans almost any topic from Intel and AMD overclocking to Phase change cooling and Windows help.I think the overclockers should give it a look.Im sure it would benefit those interested.

the only thing that prevents overclocking from really taking off in trinidad is the prevelance of  packaged systems from companies like DELL .. that offer no overclocking options by stock, and the fact that most people fraid that they  would set their pc on fire if they do , i haven't seen a single motherboard manual without reference to overclocking , or retail mobo BIOS without some overclocking option built in.  If trinis bieng cheap people , knew that they could get alot of free performance out of overclocking , and without many risks , they would be jumping all over it .

Whats prevents o/cing from being serious is in this order:

#0 Fear factor - Tied in with Knowledge factor.

#1 Knowledge, Creativity, Understanding, Passion - Just cause you read something or technically aware doesn't mean you UNDERSTAND.

#2 Cost and Availability factor due to shipping costs, taxes, etc.

#3 Lazy Factor.

...i could go on but thats the gist of it.

Nowadays all ppl do is spend mucho $$$ on brand name or stuff they see on tech sites assemble then start pressing buttons. With all that they only manage average o/cs if that much...the scores while may be HIGH and ellicit a "wow" or two...are nothing special...Nothing someone else with same components and read a guide can do.

For this and a few other reasons I have more or less given up on o/c...since anyone with enough money can simply buy the "pwnage" title and seem a "l337 o/cer".

That and the average temperature of most peoples rooms back home is nearly 10 degrees higher. If you're overclocking back home on higher end chips, you're talking water or better.

no actually alot of processors run cool enough by stock , even in badly ventilated cases/ rooms . My brothers Duron overclocked from 1.8 to 2ghz idles at 31 C  and loads at 38-40 C . My other brothers P4 northwood has similarly low temperatures , though my athlon XP mobile idles at 39 and loads at 48 , its overclocked well beyond its specification : 1.8 ghz and 1.45 vcore to 2.2ghz and 1.625 vcore .
The new Semprons and A64s will be just as cool , air cooling will be enough for small time overclocking endevours , only people who want to displace their chip a few GHZ will need water .

a couple hundred MHz over a couple GHz, is barely noticable. A good worthy OC for me has to be at least 15% or so. Taking my xp-m from 1.83@266 to 2.4@400 = great.
taking my a64 from 2.4 to 2.64 for normal use, is good, but hardly noticable.
Taking my roommate's p4c from 2.4 to 3.36 - really awesome.

There's a marked difference in air cooling between summer and winter. My best oc during winter was 2.83 on the a64. durring the hottest days of sumer prior to me getting an ac - 2.58 - not eve 200MHz. difference was 15, at most, 20C room temp.

No $hit beomagi, cooling is a heavily deciding factor. BTW that few MHz u talk about IS noticeable, but it depends on what ur doing. Trust me even 150MHz OC will make a diff if ur encoding. Cause the few seconds u gain per minute will add up to ALOT over HOURS. And well u get a few lil boosts in Benchies.

My point was to explain my previous post, not many people will care to oc back home because of the average room temp. Sure if you're encoding you save some minutes - if it's stable, but that's not very popular either. Safest way to get a decent oc, is water or better.

alot of processors will overclock on air eg. Your and my Athlon xp mobile,  90nm athlon 64s ,  northwood P4s and Pentium M's  , you only need water if you want to displace more than a GHZ , or for any prescott .

yeah

encoding isn't exactly childs play. Few of us do it with any sort of regularity.

Those that do, will surely see the benefit of OC-ing to the max. Synth and W1ntry come to mind.

I agree with you Beomagi. If it isn't a significant OC, I won't bother doing it.

My last serious OC was Intel Celeron 300A to 450

That was a RIDICULOUS jump in performance for free. Air Cooled. 50% gain in performance. It made games that were unplayable, playable.

Taking my Athlon 64 3000+ up to 3200 seems hardly as impressive nor worth the effort. 6- 7% gain.

Hardly going to make my Battlefield 2 experience any better. lol

The matter is further exacerbated by the fact that none of my current games are CPU limited. Going gungho on CPU does nothing for me at all.

We have a few Athlon XP 2600s throw in "for fun" in the GL and you couldn't tell the difference from the A64s for sweatage.

In our world (Gaming), the Video Card is definitely king.
