eh wintry... you realise thats the AGP 6800 and the PCI-E 6800 costs 250 US ? Half the point of this upgrade is to get me a PCI-E slot so i can pop in an X900 / Geforce 7700 whenever i have to (which is probably early next year) . the other half is to increase my CPU performance by 50% with an A64 overclocked to 4000 speeds .

Dread let me break it down for you:
1. The video card is actually 189USD heres the link
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130202
2. U do realise that the next gen cards will make it to AGP as well right?
3. I have a A64 3500+ that I can clock to 4000+ so does bushman, so whats ur point? ur gonna see the same CPU performance increase whether u go PCIe or not.

My question to you is, when next year they bring out the M socket chips and u cyah upgrade anymore what u gonna do with ur PCIe 939 board???

i plan to give the 939 board + graphics to my brother or sell it .
i know you can get an Nforce 3 /AGP/A64 system  ,
but PCI-E cards are cheaper to manufacture and will be produced in greater quantities than AGP as time progreses , plus the fact that some cards won't make it to AGP , and as game engines progress  AGP will begin to get  slower , right now its more than enough , but what about when games start to shuffle around  over 1 gig of texture data  and load seamlessly eg. GTA III , as Unreal 3 promises to do, the AGP bus will be overloaded and you will either have to sacrifice frame rate or image quality .
I know i'm not going to have the same mobo/card by the time it happens ( 2007 ) but i'm thinking of the longevity of my brother's system to :p .

strong points on both sides.

I have to admit, the 6800 is looking more and more tempting. That price point is only a few boxes of KFC higher than the 6600GT.

Also, there are two nforce4 mobos with both AGP and PCIe (PCI-X is a server standard) but both claim compatability issues with their "AGP" implementation. MSI K8N Neo3 and Biostar NF4ST-A9

That said, we run the MSI K8N Neo3 and it works fine with lower end AGP cards. 5200, 5500 and 5700. Ran into trouble on an ATI 9800XT

More food for thought.

if i can afford it and/or the price drops , i will definately get an x800 , the currant price is 230 USD but it should drop. Its faster than a 6800 or a 6600gt , its basically an X800 pro with a slightly lower clock . It even outruns the 6600 in doom III its own playing field.

"The Venice series of A64s is known for high overclocks eg. 2.8ghz/3ghz at low voltages "

Will it never end..the constant overestimations and hyping. Why is it most the ppl that buy these "miracle" cpus you mention cant even begin to reach these clocks? Ive complained about this so many times...but you and others never listen.

wishful thinking I suppose.

optimism iwmc.

The 3000+ chip is plenty fast as is. If an OC doesn't come out as planned, you've still got considerable power under the hood.

Trini

What resolution do you run your games at most often?

I play games at either 1024x768 or 1280x960 (preferred)

with the only exception being Dawn of War, which I used to run at 1600x1200

Bushman got up to 2.7ghz with his a64 wichester on stock cooling , i know a percentage of the chips won't be able to pass their stock 1.8 , but its just as likely that i'll get a good overclocker as i would get a bad one , all the cpus i'v overclocked so far managed to  do 300-400 mhz over stock   with cheap air cooling  so i'm of the mentality that i WILL get the A64 3000 to do at least 2.4ghz .

I normally play my games @ 1024x768 or 1296x960 with 2xAA ,  1600x1200 is just too much squinting to read in most games and my monitor is only 17 inch anyway :p .
   I can't be sued.... i'm a minor :p , if anyone complains we'll just delete the graphs .

yeah, same here re: resolutions.

lol @ trini gettin sued.

To be on the safe side, download the image to your hard drive first, then upload it to the gatt site as an attachment.

If you link directly to it, like you did with the first graph, they will see the abuse of their bandwidth coming from the GATT site.

By uploading it as an attachment, they won't be affected at all and far less likely to kick a fuss.

i'v changed my mind again....  6600gt pci-e immc , 256mb of RAM on ATI cards don't save them from ownage, doom III and like games are the future  , though hl2 has better graphics its due to much better texturing and modeling  , and valve optimized HL2 for ATI cards by making all the shaders in 24 bit precision , which no geforce supports .

Because they dunno what their doing from the start.
i run 2.7 Ghz on my winchester air cooled 2.8 is the max of air cooled on a venice and u wont be getting it at 1.4V either it will be more  1.550 or 1.6v

The difference in Ocability of the  Winchester and the Venice is the venice all of them are most likley to hit 2.6 on Air, While with winchester only 1 outta the 3 types of chips made will do 2.5ghz and above.  So if you know what your doing and what to look for Then youll check the steppings  and aquire the right chips at a even lower cost than a venice.

o btw that stuff u saying about see3 making it faster and these so called  optimizations, doh let people hear ya saying dat aye. SEE3 has nothing to do with improving speed nor does anything else thats different between a winchester and a venice core. and the difference in Oc isnt that huge

The wall on stock voltages is around 2.6.I not saying that at stock voltages the CPU will be stable but generally for the Venice it's 2.6.
