Trinidad inter school gaming league ?
« on: May 08, 2005, 11:16:04 PM »
There are inter school chess tournaments, scrabble tournaments , football and cricket tournaments ,why not gaming tournaments? I would consider many of the games we regurlarly play in the internet cafe's 'constructive' as Warcraft III builds critical decision making skills  , eg.when to attack , whether to fight over a gold mine or go straight for the main base  , and resource managment  etc.    Quake and unreal build split second reflexes  and games like battlefield , Wolfenstein, raven shield and counterstrike build  leadership skills and teamwork......
Can't gatt get funding from some organisation , and organise a series of annual inter school gaming tournaments ?  It would generate interest in gaming , whereby increasing  attendance at arcades/internet cafe's , and increasing profits ... If the organisation providing funding be a game producer / hardwer manufacturer , it will also experience boosted sales .
         thoughts anyone?

It is a brilliant idea.

I'll pitch it to the TT2005 and see if we can include it for 2005. If not, 2006.

Typically, the big events would be during vacation and it would be difficult to get school participation then.

If we have it during the school term, parents would frown on their kids playing video games when they should be beating books. An argument we would surely lose.

A bit of a challenge, but if enough minds are applied to the problem, we could work around it.

again, great idea!

NVidia gives freebies to LAN parties that have 50 or more people so we shoukd take advantage of this
as far as financial support...............one idea is to attempt pitching it to groups that advertise to teenagers and younger

like    Chubby, Snack Companies, RBTT Future Fortune etc...............

but great idea

to expand on it i would just get the schools to form the gaming teams during the school term and give em IDs that GATT would produce so there wouldnt  be easily tampered with

stipulations for the teams would be good grades 1, and parental support 2

yuh hit the nail on the head.

the biggest problem would be parents. Gaming is still frowned upon. it will be sometime before the masses accept it as a viable past time. As is, they class it under "waste of time"

uphill battle for us to change that and prove that not only delinquents drown themselves in blowing up pixels.

a battle we MUST win!!

Education is definately the key....education of the parents first of course.  I always try to get them involved by drawing refernces from games that they may currently play (All Fours, Poker, Snooker, Pool etc.).  As with anything else if you can prove tangible benefits they generally come around.

Actually the biggest problem would be the schools themselves. Most avid gamers come from the so-called prestige schools and i cant see the principals of those schools actually pitchin for a tournament like that. I kno fuh sure Hillview College wouldn't be attending in any formal capacity.

yeah, but then that beckon's the question.

does it need to be an "official" school sanctioned event?

If we can find a way to do it online, where the students don't need to leave their general district/gl/home to compete.

In all Schools there is at least one Game 'FREEKY' teacher..
there are 3 in my school.
there are distructive games as well as constructive games.
i was once invited to a chess tournament and the main heading on the poaster was   ""chess develops critical thinking skilllllllllllllls""

Just thinking that the only way we may be able to get this into schools is by some how getting recognised byyyyyyyyyy them chess pple....
because   ""War3 TFT develops critical thinking skilllllllllllllls more than chess""
ent it?

and by the way Quote   Reply #8 on: May 16, 2005, 10:25:54 PM
that will never work..
parents wont let up play games in school but do you think that they will let us go in a internet cafe late after school??? hell no they won't. think about that..

it doesn't have to be at a gl late after school.

could be on a weekend, on a lunch time, or from home on a evening.

with enough grey matter, we could find a way!

so the major problems we have to overcome :
1. Support from the non gaming community ie. parents, principals
2. time .....
3.funding
4.  Locations for sweatage .
 My solutions :
1.  Prepare presentations proving that most of the gamers have above average school performance, have somebody talk about how much they learned from games  etc.

2. Long weekends like corpus christi , divil and easter come frequently enough to host quarter finals , semi finals  etc.

3. Alot of those big hardware companies and PC retailers fund LAN tournaments like nothing,  getting a few together to fund this  shouldn't be a problem .

4. This is where green dot comes in , get at least one major cafe in each town  hooked up to the WAN , rent them out for  3-4   periods of a few days , make sure each has machines up to spec , maybe get a few machines donated from big hardware manufactorers , allow BYOC  for people with up to spec hardware ,  people who have the Green dot service stay at home and compete in the tournament .

and we have sweatage !   I would recommend the following games for the tournament .
  Strategy/team

Warcraft III : TFT
 Warhammer

 FPS/team

Call of Duty
Raven shield
 Wolfenstein : enemy territory .
Of course all of our games would  have to look fairly constructive and  skill intensive ,  and we can't have exotically violent games like unreal  or quake that involve reflexes only  or the whole point of 'building teamplay and critical thinking skills' goes to waste .

fine points

Wesleigh also raised a powerful issue.

the people with the wherewithall to properly participate in such a venture are at the tertiary level. They already have their license, access to cars, bigger budget for gaming rigs and more flexibility with time.

At the tertiary level, such extra curricula activities are almost encouraged to ensure balance.

So we can attack this from two angles. A Junior league, for Secondary level and a Senior league, for Tertiary type institutions.

The latter having the least amongst of issues to get off the ground.

I would marry the Seniors with some company wide action. Finding the gamers in BG going up against TTIT or Petrotrin Allstars.

Definitely two things worth progressin!

brilliant thread this..

I agree with baego despite allthe setbacks this a brilliant topic
another question o be raised would be what will happen to students just out of secondary education nut not in tertiary education. e.g students who take a year of after school before goin to uwi.

lol
it will be a hard sell to parents.

they love the concept of junior learning skills that could pay their medical bills in the future.

learning l337 micro in starcraft isn't going to impress them nor increase your chances of gainful employment in the not too distant future. lol
