What makes a gamer? What type of gamer are you?
« on: October 07, 2003, 01:18:06 PM »
i was noticing recently that ala Baego, people start putting up 'self-rating' graphs of what games they are and aren't good at in their sigs. now i was thinking: what kind of self rating system might be simpler and more expressive of a persons personality/gamer type?

So the question is, what are the different personality attributes of a gamer? So you can put them on a scale, where 1=not at all 3=average and 5=very. I wish someone who did socialogy and how to design quizzes would help me out here. at first it thought the components might be :

reaction time
intuitive problem solving ability
complex problem solving ability
ability to keep track of many opbjects at once
patience
curiosity
concentration
adrenaline threshold
timing

what am i missing? help me out here.
so you see where i am going with this. someone who plays fps would have: high reaction time, some patience, intuitive problemsolving and some concentration with a high adrenaline threshold

added 'timing' because of SPK
whereas a RPG gamer would have high scores in: curiosity, patience, complex problem solving.

ADDDENDUM 8/10 new system.

some good points about just wanting to enjoy the game:
due to some feedback i've received i am beginning to think that a number is deceptive as it belies RANGE. after some additional thinking, it may be better to express these things as ranges on 4 scales. so these would express what range of games you enjoy rather than trying to quanify your skill. where Y means presence and N means absence, and proximity has higher meaning

reaction-planning
intuitive problems - complex problems
calming-shocking
individual-social

so an ultra -gamer who loves ALL games would be:

Reac YYYYY Plan
Intu YYYYY Complex
Calm YYYYY Shock
Indi YYYYY Soci

and someone who only likes to play singleplayer Card Games would have
Reac NNNYY Plan
Intu YYNNN Complex
Calm YYNNN Shock
Indi YNNNN Soci

an average deathmatch FPS player woule be:
Reac YYNNN Plan
Intu YYNNN Complex
Calm NNNYY Shock
Indi NYYYN Soci

My reaction time is one of the fastest in Trinidad.  Naturally so anyway.  At the Yapollo, I got the highest reaction time in that flashing light exhibit that count the number of seconds it took you to react.  Nailed 0.2 seconds eight times in a row and got 0.3 secs 2 other times.

Patience is one of my greatest assets in gaming.

Intuitive problem solving is a must for any arcade/console gamer's survival.

Through patience, I learn to concentrate harder than an average person.

My adrenaline is very minimal.  From the time you get excited, game over.  You begin to anticipate things improperly at times.  If you loose your cool in the middle of an important gamewinning technique, you may be come tense and freeze thus creating an inability to perform at a reasonable standard.

Oh, I'm a console fighter game person.  That seemed so grammatically incorrect I just had to write that.  :lol:

Forging, I mould the skill.

lol@grammar errors

reaction time= no idea
intuitive problem solving ability=4
complex problem solving ability=3
ability to keep track of many objects at one time=3.5
patience= varies with mood
curiousity= 5
concentration= varies
adrenaline threshold= varies

i am more of an rpg person, though its possible that it comes from the fact that the only games i end up with are along rpg lines, as i also love and adore fighting games...

ok spk, how about adding 'rhythm'. That counts alot in...rhythm based games. and fighting games. or should i say 'timing'?
thats one i forgot.
thanks everyone for your feedback, it is very interesting.
and curiosity counts for alot, mangoseed.
espescially in advernture/rpg.

you may be wondering, how do i rate myself?

reaction time=4
timing=3
intuitive problem solving ability=4
complex problem solving ability=4
ability to keep track of many objects at once=4
patience=4
curiosity=5
concentration=4
adrenaline threshold=4

i enjoy a wide range of games, but with average timing am not so good in fighting games.

anybody doing socialogy and knows about the structure of these things give me a holler!

I don't have a clue how to start rating mehself. I am more of an intuitive/impulsive person. The science of things at times I will admit is a draw back.

By the way nice thread man.

I agree with shizz, why we should rate ourselves. The thing is when we go out there for sweat we all give it our best shot. Personally I would not waste time rating myself because my gaming skills are constantly evolving and I am sure the same thing goes for the rest of you.

it is just another form of self expression. some people may see it as boasting, but i think it is social to be open about your personality traits. And i never said the numbers couldnt change! i myself have become more patient in recent years as well as trying to develop more timing.
