The rumors have been slamming the web recently. Over the weekend, a supposed source close to Nintendo  about the company's upcoming console, Revolution. The highlights were integrated broadband, gyroscopes in the controllers, dual processors and a hard drive, use of the HD-DVD format, connectivity with the next-gen Game Boy, and Mario will available at launch. As for Sony's PlayStation 3, the Cell processor will reportedly run at a whopping 4.6GHz.

Sony and Microsoft are both battling to bring out "all-in-one" type gaming machines. While Nintendo is sticking to the same plan that failed the last time around, a "game-only" machine. I highly doubt the PSIII will have a cpu of that processing capability, but if the arrow continue to point in the same direction they very well may have something like that. A lot of word coming from the MS Xbox house is that the Xbox Next will be more of a flat out PC than the Xbox was. In other words, web browsing, media streaming and the like. The PSX was a clear example of what Sony maybe working on.

I think that even as a game only system it could attract sales. Where the problem comes is that we not seeing strong exlclusive titles and if we do they are being taken away.

I would buy a gamecube AGAIN if it were just for the 2 Metroid Primes, The 2 Zeldas that we will see, SMASH BROS MELEE!!

They need to start back turning heads with exclusive titles AND bring more.

Hmph...Try again Kid - Sagat

PSIII = 2006 , in 2006 we will see dual and quad core P4/AMD 64 bit chips at affordable prices, the PC will keep up , but just barely.
    the PSIII is using  an nvidia geforce 6 chip with a small process , by 2006 we will be seeing DX10 pc graphics , so the consoles will continue to have weaker graphics .
     I still prefer a medium end PC... i hate gamepads for FPS games and RTS !

Specs is one thing, yes....

But all the hardware power doesn't matter if the games don't take full use of it...and that's something that hasn't happened yet with the current generation of consoles...

Food for thought.

Keep you eye on the watch, follow it with your eyes and you will begin feeling sleepy. Your eyes will become heavy like a fat woman's breasts. Now think back, think back six years ago. Do you remember when Sony first announced the specs of the PSII and said it would push 130 million polygons, until Nintendo pointed out that, that those are untextured polygons and it will never be possible on the system for actual gameplay. When infact the number was less than half that. on the count on three you will wake up, back in 2005. 1, 2, 3 *snaps fingers*

I posted on the Cell processors already you guys obviously didn't read it. There was an article that a guy wrote basically breaking down all the tech relating the cell processor and its work with the PS3 and btw the PS3 will have 4 Cell processors, well we very well may see many a PS3 MELT. Secondly the idea of the cell processor is to be in use 100% or close to that, in essence using its full potential. THe biggest challenge with the cell is that its really hardware restricted in the way  u write code for it (vectorized programs like in an Apple G5  I guess). I should at this point point out some more stuff since everyone is blabbing about its not gonna be powerful compared to a PC etc. If I recall correctly, 1 cell processor is made up of  the following main parts:
    * 1 Processing Unit (PU)
    * 8 X Attached Processing Units (APUs)
    * Direct memory Access Controller DMAC
    * Input/Output (I/O) Interface
To those that don't know te APUS are what Intel and AMD have MMX, SSE, SSEII etc for, those are basically vertor units.
There is NO CACHE.
Each PU has 8MB or Highspeed memory (on die btw) thats 64MB of memory dedicated to it. TO put things in a lil more perpective, each of these units can operate on a packet given to it from the arbitrator and can perform operations like ur GPU since ur video card has been doing much more calculations than ur CPU long time now, ever check how many transistors those things have now and how complex the cal is? anyways moving along. I can't rem the bandwidth of each CELL but I assure u its UBSURD, and since they are vector processors i.e. made to run programs that are vectorized or broken into parts that each PU can perform at the SAME time, now consider u have 32PUs PLUS effectively 4 G5 processors, u mean to tell me u think this thing isn't going to be on par with a PC? Now also take into account that once u have more and more cells distributed thoughout ur home and if written correctly these packets can be executed by ANY cell in the network, u have what is effectively a cluster. Based on the calculations the guy did based on bandwidth and Flops per second each cell is capable of, he estimated that a lil over 500 Cell processors is all that would be required to TOPPLE the #1 Supercomputer in the world and thats if its run NOT at 100% effeciency. Now take into account the #1 supercomputer in the world is comprised of 30000+ (u saw right thirty thousand PLUS) IBM PowerPC derivatives. I'd say that fact that IBM is working on this thing says alot. WE can only HOPE that this tech is as good as it looks on paper, cause if it is even 50% effecient it will KICK TREMENDOUS amts of @$$ be it PC, Console or ur bloody HDTV!!!

Oh yeah and the PS3 will be using RAMBUS technology again, proly XDR, which is currently as fast as if not faster than DDR3. So think carefully about this new platform and tech and in time we'll see if its all hype or actually worth the billions spent. Oh did I mention u should be able to run any OS on top of the CELL? just thought to mention that.

Just for u guys I found the post I made and heres the link so u can read up on the CELL PROCESSOR

the ps3 will have 8 processors,

i think no one processor will run at 4.6GHz

but the combine throughput of the processors will be of 1 single 4.6Ghz processor

the 4.6ghZ label of the ps3 is just another PR move that is financed by the architecture of the cell processor

guys don't forget this is all PR hype.... the PS2 was supposed to be a  l33t super computer too remember?  Its actually very weak for gaming cause it has very little ram running at a high latency , though some univirsities use PS2 chips in their super computer's....
  Games like unreal III are supposed to use 2gigabytes of system memory when running at high detail ( doom III already uses 1 Gb , 512 game data , 512 textures/shaders )  , consoles are always equipped with a tiny amount of RAM , the Xbox II is supposed to only have 512mb ( in an era where you get 512mb on your graphics card alone ! ) .  So the consoles will still lag behind the PC when it comes to gaming .
  to effectivly use  all this cpu power Sony and IBM will have to go training the programmers how to optimize their programs for multiple threads etc... which isn't easy,  John Carmack himself gave up on multi threading a modification of the Q3 engine to run better on multi proc systems .
  The  Cell still may never overtake the GPU... ,  by direct X 10/11 microsoft plans to have all processing pipelines on the GPU to be 'generic' and highly flexible , so instead of 16 pixel and 6 vertrex pipelines , you have 24 generic pipelines that are flexible enough to do everything from complex shading to compiling C code .
    And lets not forget , Intel and AMD will have quad core 64 bit  CPUs at that time anyhow , Intel is promising us 24megabytes of cache on their quad core chips ,  the prescott core will likely be ditched in favor of the Dothan or something similar and cool , and in 2006 AMD and intel will have 65nanometre process technology , making dual cores affordable at the low end and quad cores at the medium/high ends .

Yea, but, we cant deny that sony EVENTUALLY lives up to the hype... Sony came out of the blue with the PS 1 and blew the nintendo 64 away! and now nintendo could hardly catch up with their game cube, compared to the PS2. The most we can do is wait it out....oh and one more thing, how much do you think that this is gonna run for? Cause I am not worried about preformance, but more price...

Oh, I'm sorry Joe, but you must not have seen any of the billion posts I made explaining what happened  during that period. Sony took the lead because of the software, they amintained the lead because of their early release of the console before the competitors. I'm not saying that SOny would not have re-established their lead in the market, but it has nothing to do with the tech aspects of the console. The PSOne is actually a 32 bit console as opposed to the 64bit N64. the N64 also has more ram and is far superior from a technical POV. The Gamecube is leagues ahead of the PSII also justa s the xbox is leagues ahead of the PSII and the GCN combined. While techs don't prove for a best selling console, the thread is about how much tech will the PSII really provide.

well the reason for the ps2's power being cut in half was a rather silly one.

The NSA (national security agency) thats right.
Swooped down and ordered sony to drop the power of the ps2 ,lol, because it was thought that at full potentional, a few ps2 units could be used to create super computers that terrorist could use for bad stuff blah blah. There is a law in the states that says that super computers cant be exported from the states to foreign countries yadda yadda.

Come to think of it, with the cell revolution, how will the nsa react hmmmnn.

Any ways.

I WARN U, PS3 = TOWN BUNNIN DONG
 remember each cell runs at 86 degrees celcius with a heat sink

so with 4 of these puppies on board... ouchhh
