Lies of the industry
« on: November 01, 2004, 12:49:46 PM »
Damn lying companies.

Capcom I prolly the biggest of them all, remember when they claimed that Resident Evil Code Veronica was a dreamcast exclusive? And then a couple years later it appeared on the PS2 as Resident Evil Code Veronica X. yeah, “X” huh?

Then Viewtiful Joe, was a Gamecube exclusive, that is about to appear on the PS2 now. With the added Dante of Devil may cry.

And again, The sons-of-bitches are about to release Resident Evil 4 on the PS2. I see where Capcom’s alliances lie.

Lionhead studios, gave all these wonderful promises of Fable, you can do this, you can do that, online play, balh, blah, blah. None of it was true.

Midway, Ed Boon is at numerous interviews saying such and such about Mortal Kombat Deception, super unloackables and the like then he’s at a chat and evading questions or sometimes claiming that such and such does not exist. Either way, he’s a liar.

Polyphony Digital, early on, big announcement, that Gran Turismo 4 will be online compatible. They even named the amount of cars that can participate in the race. All of it gone!

Lies! Lies! Lies! All Lies!

There comes a point where you may no be able to include some features in a game because of time issues, financing or man-work. But come on. Look at Capcom’s record. This seems to be happening a lot now. Valve keeps giving tentative release dates for half Life 2. Are you gonna give a tentative release every other week? Come on!

1. Remember what eventually happened to the Dreamcast? Capcom, seeing that it would not longer be feasible to have a game 'exclusively' for a system that has since pulled out of the market, has decided to release the game for the PS2 under a different title, quite possibly for two reasons:

1) To make more money off of a title whose success may have been cut short by the untimely demise of the Dreamcast, and;

2) To give players who did not have an opportunity to own a Dreamcast before it went 'poof' to still enjoy the game.

...and I for one, am glad that they're taking that approach, because they did this with another game, Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Mind you, however, this one was because of demand by the fans of the game for a release on the X-Box and the PS2, after the game, which was previously a Dreamcast exclusive, went belly up.

2. Four words.
THE CUSTOMERS HAVE SPOKEN.
And Capcom, apparently, wanted to sweeten the deal, so they threw in Dante as a nice little bonus.

3. Let's not forget....X-Box is taking heat for producing very crappy and lesser known titles as of late, and Gamecube with THAT type of control has been turning off a few people. The PS2 has practically been around longer than those two, and, despite being behind in technology compared to them, is showing more success than its competitors.

So, with that said...wouldn't you release a game for a system with proven success, if you only had to choose one?

4. I heard Fable was crap, and extremely SHORT, to boot. Two days worth of gameplay is what I heard. STILL don't know why some people think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

5. No he's not. There's a little saying that goes,' Time stops for nobody', and, unfortunately, it applies to game designers as well. Ed Boon WANTED to implement the Frozen Catacombs, the Nethership Death Traps and so on and so forth. Time just wasn't with him. So, maybe he wanted to place them in, but he didn't have time to do so, and, as such, he's practically forced into a situation where he'll have to explain to gamers what exactly happened. As for the dodging issue, he's either:

 1) Up against some irrational people who, no matter how many times he would try to give a rational explanation to them, would still maintain that he's 'a liar' that promised so and so, and didn't do diddly.

 2) Concealing some secrets for the next game that he doesn't want to let out of the bag as yet. He's already leaked that the Frozen Catacombs would be in the next title.

Given all that was done for the game, you could clearly see that time wasn't on his side. If that was the case, the Konquest mode wouldn't be the eyesore that it is.

6. No explanation. Then again, I could care less about Gran Turismo, give me F-Zero any day.

When gaming companies tell people what they plan for the game, note that they haven't actually MADE the game yet. And, given how much gamers are demanding these days, it is becoming increasingly difficult to adhere to both consumer wants and time constraints, without a little compromise. In other words, don't EVER expect the world when it comes to games. The programmers are merely human, and mortals susceptible to time. And, as such, don't expect every single thing they say they have planned for the game to actually come out. Time can be a bizatch, and, as such, forces the project team to come out with something that will, at least, satisfy the majority of what the customers want and expect out of the game, if they don't have time for all.

EDIT: Next time, I've got to quote the people I'm debating against, so they can't run away and save face like that. Ah, well.

Well, miscommunication can be a pretty big factor as well.
It can certainly screw up the development process.
I suspect that could be a possible reason why Fable was such a flop.

The thread name is fine.  It's all lies.  The foundation of our gaming empire is built upon lies.  Wasn't it magical to search for all types of codes to fight/unlock Shen Long in SF to realize that it was just chinese for dragon punch?  The lies add a bit of allure to somewhat bland gaming discussions.

It's all good, and it's all not.

Ever notice how PS2 ads don't show as much actual gameplay footage as they used to? Just a creative way of hiding their age.
This is why we go to gametrailers.com and get gameplay footage.  Age my ass.  On the other hand, don't.  I hate wrinkles.

You all want know hear something funny. I kid you not on this. I read in an old egm mag, and then I read it a year later on a website, I can't remember, I believe it was on Cnet news. Anyways, we all the know the PS2 is the weakest system of the three, it follows the GCN which follows the far superior XbX. The most graphically demanding game on the PS2 is was, at the time, Gran Turismo 3 (I said at the time because GT4 is going to be the most demanding game pretty soon, it uses dual layer dvd's to pack in the stupendous amount of data, 9 gigs, yes NINE GIGA BYTES). Gran Turismo 3 was analyzed and it only untilized 25% of the PS2's power. This is not theory, it is fact.

Anyone who has seen this game, knows how beautiful it is. The lighting engine is just gorgeous. This game only utilizes 25% of the weak PS2. The only game that came close to GT3 has to be Project Gotham Raching 2. Imagine if any developer were to invest the time and money of utilizing 50% of the power of the PS2, or even to step of their game on the GCN or even greater, to milk the xbx for what its worth?

I have seen the graphical power of the PS3 amd Xenon, and it is great, but it doesn't look to be so much greater than current generation consoles.

can't tell you how many times I have gotten into this argument. This is how I break it down. You want complete gameplay happiness, go cop all three, that’s what I did and it's the only way to remain satisifed. Each console has a few pros and a few cons.

The first is console exclusive titles, which seem to be a big thing now. You want Mario, you HAVE to go NINTENDO, you want Tekken, you have to go SONY, you want Halo 2, you HAVE to Microsoft.

a second point is, what each console delivers. Hardware-wise it's xbox

Online gameplay-wise, its Xbox, the xbox is undoubtedly far superior in both these categories. Xbox Live is so much better than the PS2 online factor, much more comfortable, far better all round. We all know the Xbox is where it's at for hardware, in both audio and visuals.

Controller-wise, is up to you, I love the GCN controller, and the wavebird is unparallel, Period!. But most look at it and think it's impossible to play fighting games, Believe me, it's not. I play CvsN2EO and MKDA on the GCN controller without a problem. Most people prefer the Dual Shock 2 because it's what they're accustomed too, some prefer the XbX controller S. It's entirely up to you.

As you can see, it's all a matter of what you want in the long run. The only way to cover all bases is to get all three. I have favorite games on all three systems, Metroid, Halo 2 (review coming soon, I only put in an hour so far) and Tekken 4. As for online play, Xbox takes it hands down, but it can't connect to a GBA for you to play Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles with your friends, so even the matter of multiplayerbility is one of choice.

As for the Nintendo DS vs. The Sony PSP. The PSP is hands down the winner when it comes to value. No doubt about it, at $200 - $250 (estimated) you get a lot, Mp3, mpeg2 play back and a slew of other features, which include the awesomely huge screen, which is widescreen by default, we're talking 16:9 ratio on the go here. I favor the analog stick over a dpad any day, but never over direct touch screen capability though. The UMD is also a great factor, we're talking over a gig of gameplay media, almost as much as a current 128 bit home console (the GCN). but the shubby battery life is a great downer to most, alot of people are put aside by that. Alot of people are talking about the graphical prowess of the PSP, (it's almost on par with PS2, yes it is true) but when it comes to handhels, I don't think people really care about graphical power. I mean the Gamegear was so ahead of its time, Hmmmm.... about what? 8 years, it's only in 2003 when the GBA became the first lit and color screen of all the handheld competitors, and guess what, that screen is front lit, where as the gamegear was back lit, which makes the colors jump out more. So graphical power may not be much of a factor to true gamers.

The DS on the other hand has a couple defining factors that bring it up to par, namely, Nintendo's undisputed comprehension of the handheld market and what satisfies it. You get two screens, which may seem gimmicky, but when you think about it, is surely gonna make for some much needed innovation in the market. you have touch screen, which is great!, you have built in Wi FI and a propietary wireless format. you have built in pictochat (Nintendo's own instant messaging soft, where u can draw pics on the touch screen and send on the fly), voice recognition (which i doubt will ever been utilized) and a couple other hidden suprises. while both look good, it actually boils down to the same factors as the home console race. its about what you want. I personally will get both. Because i want to play tekken on the go, and i want to play mario on the go. so its the only way. Something that I thought was really cool, if you get with in range (which is about 30 feet) of another NDS both will 'come to life' and let you know, their is a potential opponent, or playmate around. cool for being on a plane. Your ds comes to life, you send a message to this person via pictochat "lets play" and viola!

as for my favorites, I prefer the GCN, simply because my favorite game of all time resides there, Zelda. I am a great fan of mario also, second up is the PS2 for two titles, Tekken and Gran Turismo 4. The xbox falls last, because, its defining factor is the online play, which I am not a great fan of. For the handhelds. using the info I have, I would go with the DS, because Golden sun beats a remake of ridge racer anyday! can I get an amen!
