Doom 3 a little too much???
« on: December 10, 2004, 04:22:23 PM »
Hey you guys, I just got a copy of Doom 3 yesterday by one of meh good pafnuhs going to SAM rite, so I loading it up hoping that with the 512 I got it willb e enough. Supprisingly, the game ran, though choppy when there are really really big fire fights going on, perfectly on my miniscule FX 5200. Now, I was so amazed rite that it actualyl ran with my GPU without a hitch, however, the amazement & supprise would soon later turn into fear. Keep in mind, I have 5.1 audio, so the aound amiance was the best thign I have ever seen so far. FIrst off, I had to locate a missing scientist. I found him in a de-comissioned sector of the area I was in. Low & behold, a cliche, something goes horribly wrong and all hell breaks loose (litterally @ the hell part). A dimentional hole opened and as I said before, all hell broke loose. With everything going on all around, the place shaking and whatnot, the lights go out, phased me a little bit, but nothing. THe, I turned tot he same scientest and noticed that he was beign possesed by a deamon. I used the small pea shooter I had and had to empty 7 shells just to down that guy. So here I am, while playing this game, and I am already in the dark mind you, palms sweatty, muscles tight & a total state of panic, the 5.1 audio really lived up to its name. Amidst all the panicked radio chatter, I had to find myself back to HQ. SO I had a whole slew of bad guys to conquer on my way. I remember having to empty 2 and a half clips just to down 3 bad guys. There was one point at the entrance to HQ where my mind had enough and I had to save the game and exit. THe hair at the back of my head was raised enough and I think my keyboard had enough of my sweatty palms. I think that ID software has outdone themselves with Doom 3 and will mos def become an instant classic 10 years form now. One word of advice: If you got a really really good graphics card, 5.1 audip and yuh system real fast, play doom 3 int he morning with some padnuhs. It took 40 fellahs in one room in SAMS to get past the first level, and I coulda only tolerate 15 minutes of Doom 3 before my mind had enough. The graphics & soudn work as soo out of this world that you may feel you loosing a sense of sanity for a bit.

ok, we all make mistakes, I know I do. so here's a tip, a little sumptin I picked up. I would type my post in MS word, then spell check and paste it in the gatt window. That should help.

Another thing, Doom is an old game, but I have never played it! And so i just suffered a few spoils. Please warn before you make us read spoilers.

Thanks, PS, what is the point of this post? Is it a review, or your opinion, or what?

doom3 is one title that ine can safely say lives up to the era of gaming we are in....
have you ever played a game that's been recently released and the sound or graphics or gameplay is disappointing?...because we expect more from our now totaly hyped gaming society...

yet doom3 along with halo, prince of persia 1&2,halflife2,cronicles of riddic,NFSU1&2........

Doom still has great impact on all the fields of a good videogame!

Yeah I will agree with yuh Pablo, doom 3 was a game that at first I could not take too long. After 15-30mins I usually needed a break. I think that they set out to make the game a survival type action FPS and were very sucessful at it. Though there will not be any Doom 4, I think this game (the whole doom genre) has made its mark on the gaming industry and was a welcome change to the whole FSP experience. I gave it a 4.5 outta 5. Lost some points cause its just too power hungry even on a 9800PRo and 1GB of memory.

This game had me disabling my 5.1!!

i was so scared i refused to play this (day or night) by myself!

My Lame-o system (1.4Ghz Athlon, 256Mb Ram, gforce4 4200 Ti)

performed very well....on low settings....

but then that audio freaked me out!! :o

your system just needs more RAM to play doom 3 well  , it eats up 386mb by itself . And it doesnt' like using virtual memory AT ALL .
you'd want another 256mb stick in your rig :P .

Doom 3 is a great game, doesn't dissapoint, though the gameplay is the same as the original doom..... shoot ....... kill.. get scared... shoot....

512??? come on Trini... I have 1GB and a Radeon 9800PRo and I still think Doom3 could run better than it does... I prolly get a steady 25-35fps under normal gaming and less than 25 when teh screen gets cluttered with enemies... and thats on medium...

if you'd notice.... doom 3 has a subsystem that limits your FPS if it decides your machine is w3ak, if you turn of bump mapping and shadows it will still hit the same FPS all the time .
and more RAM won't increase your FPS by more than 3%  if the RAM you have now is enough for the game NOT to be accessing virtual memory . :P
One example : in the first level, in Sarge's command center thingy, if the door opens and you look through it the frame rate automaticallly drops, and if i remember correctly , the frame rate drops when looking at him too . You can turn bump mapping off , shadows off, texture resolution down to low, and the frame rate will still drop to the same values....

a 9800 pro 128mb is supposed to play doom 3 @1024x768, high. 6800 256mbs can play it on ultra .

I get great frame rates with doom3 on high settings. I get between 30-40 in high detailed areas and 50-60 in dark areas.

What I have running:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
512mb 3200 DDR
128mb Radeon 9600XT

And like I mentioned I get satisfactory frame rates, only time it ever dropped below 30 was in the fight with the huge half spider half human looking thingy at the end of either level 2 or 3.

Great game even though I hardly play it now, since I kinda got tired of just running around and shooting everything I came across. I play it at least once every 2-3 weeks. Slowly but surely I'll reach the end eventually.
