NORTON PRODUCTS == POS.

That said no av is perfect so best to rotate them monthly and do complete scans at least once each time you change.

Sygate seems a bit buggy on win2k...but having tried almost all the rest on win32. For UI/Usability there is no better...so far.

injoy firewall...interesting. Nitrate always knows where the weird security stuff is ;)

That said, knowing how to properly configure any FW/IDS is almost always overlooked imho. I'd be willing to bet most people just blindly give permissions to potentially harmful processes...or harmful period.

No IDS is perfect and even less so without constantly evolving knowledge...so keep learning.

Your point is quite valid, even security expert says the same thing all the time..Point well noted.

its perfectly possible to survive without an antivirus program. especially if you arent an adventurous surfer. in trinidad though id advise not being without a firewall. when i was in england i had no need for virus scanners or firewalls and i had dsl. never got anything in over 2yrs. the first day i logged online in trinidad boom got blaster. got 3 virus and many other worms. tstt simply doesnt do any house cleaning. recently its gotten better but still its better to get a firewall even if its to protect others from yours if it is infected.

oh and i wouldnt recommend Nortons or Mc Afee. simply its like Xp most virus target them and know how to avoid them. especially when you havent recieved the proper update. some even shut them down. i use Pc-cillin its easy and it comes with a buit in firewall. no problems in over a year.

I have never heard of anyone getting hijacked over a 56K connec, NEVER! and to be quite honest crackers go after major corps to make a point most of the time, they have better things to do than crack a dell machine to "steal" your credit card number, Now, I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but rarely. More often that not larger connects like DSL, windows firewall is adequate, even norton picks up the slack, but 56K'ers have rarely have anythign to worry about. Most of your virus comes from the beloved Kazaa, most spyware comes from Porn sites, you know when you go to a hacker site and that little vote window pops up, or it says "you have to agree to get such and such" Don't EVER TOUCH THAT WINDOW!!!!! Even when you hit the 'X' to close it, or hit 'no' you are activating the install of the software. hit it and look in the bottom, right corner of your browser window, you will see it says "installing software" super fast and it dissappears then you wonder where are all these pop ups are coming from. It's best to go to the task manager and shut down the process tree. as for antivirus or firewalls, i like norton, as for spyware, i use a trio of Pestpatrol (most powerfull, you will really see how 'harmless' imesh or kazaa really is), Ad aware, and Webroot's spysweeper. they all catch stuff the other may miss. they are great as a combo!

camrE most of todays problems arent  from hijacking pcs. these days codes are simplfying efforts into DOS attacks or internet noise. a simple excution on you pc, invisible, none intensive, just sending a small ping to a site. while it may seem stupid but when put together with 200 - 500 other unsuspecting PCs can bring down a entire server network. doesnt matter if they have dsl or dail up just as long as they can send a packect. thats the business of web attacks. no more heavy handedness. its all about using dormant code. thas why most of the talk today isnt about really protecting yourself from outsiders its about protecting outsiders from you. firewalls help regulate both incomming and outgoing traffic. personnally i try to limit as much traffic leaving my pc. then its easy to see if ive got something.
