The most u may get outta that rig u have there is up to 1.13GHz, but not likely as those are Tualitin cores and most boards that were supporting 866MHz would not support that. THe most u will prolly be able to do with that is add more memory, a better Video and sound card. Thats about it.

I feel your pain...I've got an old rig sitting down at home with a 933MHz processor in it...I can upgrade the CPU a bit, but for the price...it doesn't make sense. It's already maxed out in the RAM dept....512MB woo hoo...and I threw in my old GeForce 2GTS to bump the graphics a bit...but there's not much else that can be done to it on the cheap...
Next step is to get a whole new machine to replace it...

I'll tell you how much it costs:
MORE THAN AN AMD CPU AND MOBO ANYDAY.
And thats just initial cost, we haven't even begun to talk about ur light bill with a precott core in there... ever thought of making the change? I'd be more than happy to give u the costing on the alternative platform, IF ur interested.

you should go for athlon 64, as w1ntry says.
can't go wrong.
Power for the people. An nforce4 + athlon 64 3000+ should be a good start. About US$90 for the board and us$135 for the processor.

Depends on the mobo, not sure if pci x compatable with pci2.1
if you lookin to rebuild ths system on the cheap check the sempron 3000 .
you are guaranteed your pci components we work and a change of mobo drivers on the hd will have you runnin like normal

Ok hears what, before anyone leads u astray (not u baego). Heres what the A64 will best the P4 hands down and it has for the past what going on 2 years now? AND at a lower price, making its price performance ratio much better than that of any P4 right now. Anyways let me get down to it, there are 2 sockets u can choose from in the AMD Athlon 64 lineup. There are 754 and 939 pin CPUs. THe difference between the two is basically the 939 has a dual ON DIE (note not on the northbridge) memory controller as oppsed to the single on die memory controller of the 754. The 754 does have 1MB L2 cache as opposed to the 512k on the 939 (u following me here?). Now as far as the difference in performance, there isn't really any, cause a 3200+ 754 will perform the same as the 939 does in games and application performace across the board really. There is other diff that is worth mentioning, that is the 754 boards are cheaper and don't support PCIe. Thus it is my opinion that ppl should go with the 939 and the nForce 4 chipset IF they are very SERIOUS gamers. For the average to avid gamer the 754 is MORE than enough.
So heres what, i'll drop a system on both sockets for u to give u an idea of what to look for:
939 socket system
A64 3200+ (doh start any lower than this for this socket) 200US
nforce 4 MOBO maybe a DFI Lanparty (140US)
512x2 PC3200 (ur choice here)
nvidia Geforce 6600GT or 6800 (non ultra) 190US & 290US respectively
(the mobo I told u about has PCI as well as PCIe so doh worry bout sound, and PCIe will NOT work with PCI, the slots are different size to start with).
I would suggest case and stuff but thats up to you and well the A64 runs MUCH cooler than a P4 so yuh doh have to worry about getting an expensive case for cooling. A 400W PSU will more than support that system as well.
HD I would suggest Hitachi 80-120GB SATA II HD's as the nforce 4 chipset is the first to support SATA II. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS.
On the 754 Front
a 3200+ 754 (same price as above)
mobo nforce 3 250 PRO (I would suggest an MSI Neo or Asus)
same memory, same case etc.
a 6600GT or 6800 non ultra (the AGP versions tend to be cheaper which is a plus)
Unfortunately they nforce 3 only supports SATA I so eitehr maxtor or seagate or hitachi SATA drives are fine (NO WD)
these boards are all PCI so doh worry bout sound etc.
Now there is ONE more option for flexibility that the 754 offers. If u are strapped for cash u can buy a Sempron 3100+ 754 PIN CPU and slap it in the same mobo as above. This chip is an overclocking beast and is cheap (120US) THen u can later on upgrade to a 3700+ A64 754.
There are a couple inherent benefits to the A64 CPUs, namely they are 64-bit and support the NX bit (doh let intel brainwash yuh into thinking they first with EMT64 and NX which is a security enhancement of SP2 on Win XP) AMD was first since they had it since LAST YEAR with the launch of thier A64 line. Also since the memory controller is ON DIE, if u overclock, the memory controller is inherently OCed as well which means for a greater boost in performance than on an P4. If u have any other question feel free to ask. Also I can hook u up with all these parts if u want. So feel free.

AMD is the best for any gamer , intel is weak and expensive . the A64 on any socket runs circles around equally rated intel cpus in games. Not to mention the new revision E chips have SSE3 and more optimizations = faster .

Yeah a 754 A64 would be the best bet IMHO. He can reuse most of his stuff (if he really wants too) and will offer really good performance for a reasonable price.
