It depends on the operating system you're using.  I'm assuming its XP here.  To make things easy, you need to change the networking settings on each PC so that they're in the same workgroup.  To do this, right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
Then go to the 'Computer Name' tab.  Click on the 'change' button.  In the next window that appears, you can input the computer name, and the Workgroup (do NOT use 'Domain', you will just complicate things).
Special note: All PCs should have the same workgroup name, but the computer names MUST be unique from one another, or else you'll have problems setting up your networked games.
You may also have to fiddle around with your IP addresses.  For more details on that, hit me up at jeremeyev@msn.com

the "fiddling around with ips" is a simple matter of assiging an ip to each machine and putting each machine on the same subnet.

a configuration that works welll for me and isnt complicated at all is this

192.32.5.1 to 192.32.5.(anything up to 254)

and subnet of 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0

this is perfect for a nice lil lan game.

used this set up for a dawn of war sweat in the office 2 days ago.

No problem man.  Most people don't realize how easy it is.  Once you learn it the 1st time, you'll never have problems again.

Ay Crixx, good lookin out on the IP explanation.  I was thinkin of a way to easily explain it, but you nailed it.

If you using the 192.168.x.x route, it's advised that your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, as it is a Class C IP Address.

255.255.0.0 would be used for the 172.16.0.1 - 172.31.255.254 IP addresses, at least when it comes to Private IPs.

192.32.5.x is not private IP address btw, Crixx.

192.32.5 is perfectly fine as a private ip cause of the subnet being used

not being posted on the net so it really doesnt matter
i just chose de 192.31 cause i used it and 192.168 is another typical setup

Ok, well so long as it not goin online...then yea it's fine.

But still, I prefer to use the private IPs for LANs...but then that's just me.

Oh boy, that makes things a lil more tricky.  You will STILL have to make sure that the 'Workgroup' name must be the same as the rest of PCs (the XP ones).  Of course you will also give it a unique network name.

To do all this, right click on 'Network Neighborhood' and click 'Properties'.  You will find the relevant fields under one of the tabs (can't remember which one).

Yes it uses the Cat5e cable for Gigabit Ethernet I believe, just that Gigabit Ethernet does a different encoding scheme to achieve such speeds, unless i am mistaken...

Noooooo....
What you are calling 10/100/1000 is probably cat6. This has more twists, and a broader frequency range, 250 Mhz I believe (could be wrong on the frequency, but it is a different frequency)
What you are calling 10/100 is probably cat 5 or 5e, which has less twists and a lower frequency range. You may be able to get by with low end cable, and maybe even get your speed, but it can't be guaranteed. This is the purpose of the cable ratings, cat5, cat5e, cat5E, cat6, and cat7.
Do yourself and others at your LAN party a favor and if you will be using Gigabit ethernet, and need it, use the right kind of cable. (BTW to make your Gigabit Ethernet work at Gigabit speeds you will also need to hook that gigabit ethernet card to a gigabit switch or, a gigabit hub...I haven't seen many of those.)
And in honor of Forest Gump,
That's all I have to say about that.

gigabit switches and hubs, are rather popular now. just dont go to the local parts places expecting to see them at a resonable price. also, the best i've seen is gigabit to gigabit using a crossover cable - minimal overhead.

Gigbit Ethernet MOST likely will not run on a Cat 5 cable. It requires Cat 6 or possibly Cat 6e (though 6e is not as yet a widely accepted standard). There are other Cat 6 standards that will technically support  10G Ethernet, however this is suspected NOT to run for the standard 100m. There is Augmented Cat 6 which is under development by TIA which is supposed to carry 10G without the inherent problems for normal Cat 6. It is also important to note the Cat 6 is inherently less supple than Cat 5 because of the sheilding between each pair by a plastic core. Cat 7 is being worked on in Europe as we post here and will be fully shielded around the outside diameter it will also have a shield around each individual pair (you can see that cost here is growing rapidly right?) Both Augmented Cat6 and Cat 7 will run at up to 500-600MHz and work for 100m.

For a simple LAN party I would suggest Cat 5e and ur existing 8 port hub/switch (switch being better) will be MORE than enough. I have played up to 10man free for all on a 100Mbps switch (UT2004) and i've had 4 man on a 10Mbps Hub. Gigabit Ethernet is currently a bit expensive for most avg Joes and will require all of you having a Gigabit Ethernet adapter as was stated above. The one thing to remember in these things is that the slowest connection on the network generally is the determining factor in the speed of the network. So if ur buddy with a Win98 machine has a 10Mbps card, expect the network to run at that.

good talk there wintry

and good work on the clarification that gigabit is cat6 and above and not cat 5e ( although there is a way to do it he he he)

i also saw a truly interesting setup for +gigabit ethernet using fire wire which is cheaper than gigabit switches and cards but happens to be like a million times harder to setup...

also for some reason... the primary beneficiaries are silly     os x jaguar users.
