Imagine if u tried to call 999..
« on: March 23, 2005, 09:06:11 AM »
Now to ANYONE in T&T with a GSM or even a TDMA phone, you'll know that trying to call on a friday evening or weekend is like playing russian rullet, except that u have a barrel with 200 bullets and 1 blank. Meaning ur prolly not gonna get thru IF it even reaches far enough to get to someone voicemail. The point of this article however is along the lines of a land line. We all know, that good reliable piece of copper that runs all over the place that u are proll 90% likely to get thru to on a 24/7 basis. Now imagine having one of those new, handy dandy VOIP (voice over IP) phones that allows u to cal anywhere in the world at a much reduced cost. Now this sounds good right? sure it does... all up until some carzy MOFO breaks into ur house, shoots ur parents and u try to call 999 (or 911 in the case of the article I am about to include) and u get a message telling you that u need to use another phone  . So heres the full article regarding this particularly DISTURBING piece of literature. Oh and well that would be expected if u used ur cell down here on said days to call babylon.

Texas sues VoIP company

It blocked 911 calls

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 23 March 2005, 07:43

A VOICE over IP outfit is being sued by the State of Texas for blocking access to emergency calls.

Vonage has been sued, not for blocking the calls, but for failing to warn customers about limits to its 911 service. 911 is what the colonials dial to contact what in the UK we call 999 for.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said the state had taken action after a February incident in which a family with Vonage service couldn't get through to 911 dispatchers.

A woman called Joyce John tried to dial 911 from a VoIP phone in her home after a burglar broke into the house and shot her parents.

Her call was connected to an automatic recording saying she would have to dial 911 from a different phone because she had not paid for the service.

Vonage considers that its 911 service is an add-on which customers have to pay more for. It says that it did nothing wrong as it did warn customers that they had to pay extra.

It told PC World that VoIP 911 services don’t work the same way as traditional 911 service as dispatch centres can't pinpoint the address where a VoIP call originates.

Surely they know the IP address and where that is situated?

That's BS.
Charging people to call 911 is like charging a person to breathe AIR.

I find one of the employees should have HIS home broken into, shot in both legs, and dial 911 only to hear that same BS message that his company so eagerly provides, all the while bleeding to death on his new shag carpet. Let's see how HE feels when that happens to him.

....karmic retribution is a bi-yotch, isn't it?

I was under the impression that the phone laws in yankeeland said that they had to let 911 calls through, even on cell phones and what not that had been "disconnected".
