Close Combat might be the game you're talking about. I had the demo for it...it was real fun. No base building, just squadron-leading. Kinda complicated and difficult though. Had a few sequels or expansions.

Or you might be talking about Commandos. Smaller scale, commanding about 5 men in some stealth missions. That was plenty fun. I think part 3 just came out.

There's another one coming up named Silent Storm that's creating quite a buzz too.

Hmm try empire earth,, Rise of Nations also has world war two technology but i cant remember ever seeing one based on world war 2 itself there was a couple months aback i remember seeing a game based on naval wars during world war 2 but just like Kayode's game all units were already under your command

yeah- you could try empire earth... kinda crappy i fine though. Check the command an conquer series- not really ww2 though...
