DVD copy blocker invented

Works 97 percent of the time... gosh!

By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 16 February 2005, 08:10
A SILICON VALLEY software outfit has invented a new technology that it claims blocks 97 per cent of DVD copying software.

Macrovision says its RipGuard system does not interfere with the DVD’s playback or picture quality.

According to the China View, the company claims that the product could reduce DVD ripping from a PC. Although software used to rip discs is illegal in the United States, it has been around for more than five years.

We would have thought that for RipGuard to be effective it would have to work 100 per cent of the time. All the pirates need to do is rip the DVD once, then it can be copied.

There goes the local dvd club.

I agree with the make and break idea, however wait till they start making hardware and software that prevents ripping. Its already in the works. Imagine trying to rip a dvd and ur dvd drive tells u no. Its all in the hardwiring as well as software. Either way I think we safe for the time being.

As d_apprentice rightfully pointed out...it was made by man...and it will be cracked by man...

Either that or everyone will move to the 3% of copying software that isn't blocked by this new protection ;)

Umm… Why is this still news, I will tell you why.
Because the companies will do everything they can to stop piracy
and we will do everything we can to show them their attempts are futile.
Nothing is counterfeit proof, nothing is unhackable. The same way it was locked, is the same way it will be unlocked.
why do these silly people think "hmmm I will think of a way that no one else will think of."
quite simply, silly.

Camre lives under a rock (no offense). The truth is that we need not worry anytime in the near future. IE we who are not in the US. Just now the US will be like China, no rights, no voice, do as u are told and like it. If u don't u get charged, molested in prison and live the rest of ur life in rehab. LOL. U may think it an impossibility but there are means and ways to lock u out. Just use propriety hardware and software that carry tremendously heavier legal fines and make sure to pay ur engineers well so they doh show the world the exploits.

Well put it this way, if all software was open source ppl would have found another way to make money right? take for instance Unix is open source but not many ppl use it cause its not as friendly. THus ppl pay other ppl for services. Make the software free but charge ppl for optimizations, online support, proprietry hardware support, basically things that we pay for already. It would also loosen the strangle hold any software vendor has on the market as ur sales would hinge on ur support. Its just a thought. Oh and maybe not games... it'd be unfair to NOT pay for games, however a few more free games couldn't hurt.
