Well, I do plan to leave the FX series. I'm gonna reach over to the 6 series, but I still say the Fx5200 is pretty ok. I ain't saying it hot up and whatnot where I can rank with the big boys. This card is good for a beginner int he gaming arena. It's time for me to move on to bigger & better toys  :P

[ $100 = R 9550 (9500pro even better if you can get it).

$100 - 150 =  R9600 PRO or 5700 XT

$150 - 200 = R9800 PRO / 5900 XT

$200 - $300 = 6600 GT (agp/pci) / R X800 XL (non agp)
Are you kidding? the 5900xt is nowhere in the class of a r 9800pro. Its closer to a r 9600pro but i would go for the 9600pro myself. Ridiculous reccomendations.

5900 XT for 150 is a great deal... you are hard pressed to find a 9600xt for 150 . And right now finding a 9800  PRO is like trying to find a live chicken in KFC , all you get is 9800SE or the 128bit models ... which are just about the same as the 5900xt.
though i'd reccomend u stay away from the FX card like you would a woman with a facial hair , the things have no DX9 support or performance to speak of , try running half life 2 in DX9 mode with an FX will get you a slideshow , even the 5900 ultra has trouble keeping above 30 FPS @ 1024x768 .
what you should do is wait for the Geforce 6's to come into AGP ..... a 6200 is supposed to retail @ 120 USD , around the price of a 9600 pro  , which it beats black and blue, and once overclocked it will give a 9600xt/9700 pro serious trouble .
the 6600  non gt will go for 150-180 , it has 8 pipes like the GT but clocked @300mhz , it would match a 9800 pro and beat it easily once overclocked .

sempron = weak ,  my old  radeon 8500 plays half life 2 @ 1024x768 max texture quality etc.  , its no big deal ,  but the 6600gt can handle 1296x1024 with AA and AF on , your 9600xt would cry mercy at that resolution alone .
I need more RAM though.. upgrading to 1Gb dual channel at the end of this month .

with a game like Chronicles of Riddick, I have to force the resolution lower than 640 x 480, I think it's now 540 x 400 or some crazy shithe ike that. The FPS round there runs at 25 - 30 with everything set to medium. As for a processor, I have an Athlon XP 2600 & 512MB of PC 3200 memory

you can go .... but can you maintain a stable 30 FPS ?

i never got a chance to play riddick , though i'm sure my 6600gt will handle it good  .... 5200 is a very weak card , a geforce 3 would play riddick better .

I hear ya, but the only thing goin for it is shader 2.0 The FPS varies depending on the situation (lighting, weather effects, number of people etc.) If you want I can hook u up with a copy of it so u can have fun and try it out for yurself and see

Yea Tac, I totally understand where you comin from. Even a game like Max Payne & Mafia, certain senarios slow down performance. Oh, one thing I forgot to add, is the option for me to choose between high performance & high quality. Coudl that affect FPS as well?

yes but not much ,  quality settings just ease up stress on the GPUs texture/pixel processing ,  the 5200's problem is that it has NO memory bandwidth or shading power ,  your average 5200 has something like 4 Gb/S , a good one will give you 8,  while a geforce 3 pushes 6.4  , and 8500 9.6 gb/s .

What de hell yu talking bout maem!

Saying a 5900xt not in the realm of a 9800 pro and comparing it to a 9600 pro?

OMfg, i have a 5900xt in my machine RIGHT now, and it totalllyyyy ownz a 9600 pro's base.

I got a 9600xt in the office and while its  impressive, its not holding water against a 5900xt.

And on certain versions of a 5900xt (like the one i have!) u can oc it to get it near 9800 pro performance.

THen if yu more daring, you can flash the bios and turn it into a 5950 and then yu can compete with the 9800xt.

Pfft, i doh know where yu come with that flame from horse but whoaaaaaa
better luck next time.
