Geforce 6600 GT (AGP 8X)
« on: January 07, 2005, 02:23:13 PM »
Hey guys, I've been playing games with my Geforce Fx 5200 card, I know it's not all that hot up or anything, but I must admit, it is doin well especially when games like Doom 3 & Half Life 2 come to mind. I've been discussing all the time with cereal_killer about me getting the 6600GT AGP 8x version (When I check up on Nvidia's website there's an AGP 8X version & a PCI express version). He tells me that is the way to go. So, I wanted to know if anyone has owned one or has played on one to tell me what it's like.

i'm using one right now, it blows a 9800 pro out of the water, and beats it with a big salmon .  Half life 2 smooth @ 160x1200 high, anisotropic @16x , doom III on high 1600x1200 , i'd think it will play it on ultra with 1 GB of ram...
I'v benchmarked my brothers 5200,  only 800 3dmark 2003 , compared to 8580 on this baby... yes it IS 10 times as fast !
i'v seen them on www.buytrinidad.co.tt for 2000 TT , considering i payed 1350 for mines ( in us),  not too bad...
But if you aren't a serious gamer ( 15 hours + per week, lots of games, love high resolutins ) and don't have the funds, a 9600 pro is only 100 US , and  3-4 times as fast as a 5200 .
 AGP 8x yes :)

No one seems to care about his cpu.  It makes no sense getting a high level card such as that only to be heavily limited by his cpu.

Anything under 2500xp level stick to a 9800pro unless you plan on upgrading cpu sooner than later.

anything under 2500XP/2.4 ghz level, stick with 9600xt/9500 pro...  no sense in buying such an expensive card when your CPU limits its FPS by almost half .
   On an Athlon FX, the geforce 6600gt makes 9500 3dmark 2003, 27000 2001SE .... my 3200 will only push it to 8580/1800 ... a 2500 would have trouble past 7500/16000.

Yeah that would be my preference, except I just saw some reviews of the X800XL and if it fits in the sub $300US price range believe me why bother with a 6600GT, 6800nu or even a 6800Ultra... cause for the price performance that card stands to bring into the mid range market... nv1dia have it REAL hard.... thing is its PCIe though... but still I am sure I will build an A64 rig before this year is out... so I am definitely watching that card.

the 6600gt has a faster processor @ stock speed, 500x8 = 4000 texels/pixels a second , vs 325 x 12 = 3900 .  The only advantage the 6800 nu has is memory bandwidth , 21 GB/S of it , my 6600gt has no trouble running @ 1.2GHZ ram , =  19.2 GB/s .
If you are an enthusiast you have a chance of bieng able to flash the 6800 to GT/ultra , though you need even more power and cooling ....
The X800XL won't be sub 300 US till 6-8 months down the line, and  its not much faster, the benchmarks say its only 10-15% faster than a 6600gt , and slower in doom III ....

until ATI pulls out  a 200 dollar x800 AGP, get a 6600gt ! . a 6800 is at least 280 US for a good model , with a 6600gt you get 99% of the performance , ( without AA on) .

X800XL is PCI-X till a very long while again . And ATI's new SM3.0 architecture is coming out next quarter ,  at that time they will stop preventing  their partners from using SM3 ... and almost ALL games will support it . within a year a card with sm 3 will start to have alot of IQ/speed  a card with SM2 doesn't .
Best bet : stick with AGP, get a geforce 6600gt/6200 , or go to PCI-X and get one of the new @ti cards .

40.1 FPS by the 6600GT vs 44.8 by the X800XL

The 6600GT costs US$188 and that X800XL is being sold online for US$479.00

(Not US$300.00)

So it still seems the 6600GT is the best card to go with for the budget.

Ouch at the 6800 Ultra scores!! That is performance.

True....but also take into account that the ATI cards are "handicapped" under Doom 3...so it would be wise to take a look at performance/benchmarks in other games as well to get the full story...though, truth be told, the price/performance comparisons would probably still tell the same story in the end...

The 6600GT seems to be the killer card for this generation of cards...kudos to nVidia...

also take in mind that the geforce 6s and FXs are also handicapped in most DX9 titles, since they don't support 24 bit precision, they have to use much more demanding 32 bit precision .
The geforce 6s have more shading power than currant ATi's . Once the games start   using 32 bit precision properly  we will see a little more detail that X8xx/9xxx cards lack . though the ATI cards will always be faster .

Ok you guys, thanks for the many replies. Jus so you know, my COU is the Althon XP 2600, I heard some guys mention the 2500. I got the 2600, hope that will not limit the tru power of any graphics card.one thing I will mos def look at doing is a graphics card upgrade to the 6600GT and right now, totally optional, a processor upgrade to the Atlhon XP 3200. WHen I get my first job however, I will mos def do an overhaul with the mobo and spike to Athlon 64 3400 & 6600GT

perfectly correct czar,

I made the point of show casing doom to "tell the whole story" since the bit by w1ntry only told half of it.

put both together and you get a better flavour for the cards real ability. John Kerry + George Bush iwmc. lol

The price was also a DECIDING factor. $479.00, ouch.

Also, another big issue, these benchmarks are at 1600x1200. A resolution most people's monitors won't be able to reach, let alone worry about video card performance at that level.

At lower resolutions, the scores are much more evenly matched. The cards only truly separate out at 1600x1200 with af and aa on. Hardly a real world setting for john doe gamer.

An extreme hard core gamer, yes....john doe gamer....no.

lol
