Asus new main board breaks records...
« on: November 20, 2004, 11:47:42 AM »
"The ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard set a new 3Dmark05 record with a stunning 10,118 points during the recent Nvidia nForce4 launch conference. As the worldwide leader of motherboards, ASUS created the world’s first motherboard with the capability to support SLI (Scalable Link Interface) and surpass the 10,000-point threshold.

http://www.asus.com/news/2004/20041022.htm

Taipei, Taiwan; November 17 2004 – ASUSTeK Computer Inc. (ASUS), the worldwide leader of motherboards, today launched the A8N-SLI Deluxe, the first AMD-based motherboard that provides support for SLI (Scalable Link Interface) to enable simultaneous operation of two PCI Express™ graphics cards.

The A8N-SLI Deluxe adopted several exclusive designs including a special layout tailored for thermal issues, the EZ Plug for dependable power supply to satisfy the high power demand of two PCI Express graphics cards, and the EZ Selector for easy activation of SLI (Scalable Link Interface) mode.

"With the help of ASUS, we have made SLI technology a reality, providing extreme graphics processing to those who demand the very best," said Drew Henry, General Manager of Nvidia's platform business. "The A8N-SLI Deluxe, the first board to successfully incorporate our NVIDIA nForce4 SLI core-logic technology, is tailored for gamers running the latest 3D titles."

Umm crixx dude, you sure thats the Northbridge... its an @MD mobo after all, honestly I can't even remember. I know the memory controller that is normally on the northbridge in 1ntel chips  are on die on an @MD CPU... anyways, amazing board, amazing performance and way to go A$US and @MD!!!! 1ntel will take a serious hit till Nv1dia brings out its 1ntel SLI chipset!!! Funny you should mention that w1ntry...nVidia has recently signed a deal with Intel to license their bus technology...so as of 2005, the nForce platform will be headed to Intel land...

Details here --> http://www.anandtech.com/news/shownews.aspx?i=23401

I particularly like the analysis of the #7 & #11 posters...
Quote
So Intel gets a platform that steals share away from its Tumwater chipset and its own 925/915 chipsets...for what? You still can't wring much more performance out of the aged P4 platform (faster bus speeds don't help, you're already using dual channel DDR2, etc.). There are two scenarios I see, neither of which are great for Intel - nVidia develops an amazing chipset and steals marketshare from Intel on the chipset business which it currently DOMINATES, or nVidia develops a chipset that is equivalent to the 925/915 which doesn't help Intel woo people back from the AMD camp. Maybe Intel just did this as retaliation against ATI for going against them???
Quote
You people think too much that you miss the obvious. Intel wants SLI technology so that they can compete with AMD in the game market. That is all. Plus, Intel doesn't want to lack any technology that might make companies like Dell go AMD. No matter how much you complain about it, SLI will be the fastest gaming platform available and Intel will be damned if AMD is the only solution.
Totally agree with #11, Intel probably championed this move...to bring SLI to their side...makes complete sense imo.

I'm more than certain that Intel could develop their own dual pci express mobo, but SLI isn't just 2 pci express slots...there's lots more in between thatmakes it what it is...

The main drive behind this would seem to be marketing imo...now AMD can't claim that they are the only platform with the coveted SLI...the playing field is once again even....features-wise anyways...

I beg to differ on a level playing field.... 1ntel won't have an Nv1dia chipset to support SLI in the immediate future (less Nv1dia has been making one in the background for some time). Whereas the @MD platform will have it by years end if not Q1 of next year. So it should be a good 4-5 months in the LEAST before we see a paper launch of an SLI feature on an 1ntel based board. Alternatively there is @TI who is also developing an SLI type arrangement, however that may take even longer depending on how far along their actual development has come.

Add to that the fact that W1N64 should be out this year and 1ntel not having a true NATIVE x86 based 64-bit processor, I think that @MD will have the upper hand here as the added power of 64-bit should increase the performance of SLI as well... at least one would think. So that in mind (and @MD being the top performer of late with its FX series) I think the war is far from over. And the 'underdog' has, had and will continue to have the upper hand at least for a year again.

I totally agree with what you're saying...what I meant was that features-wise...they will be "level"...in other words...Intel wants to make sure that AMD can't say that they have something that Intel doesn't...even in light of the fact that Intel may be late to market with their own version of it...they can at least say that it's on the way now...

I've already started planning my next pc based on this new A8N-SLI...It will be that, 2x512PC3200, a GeForce 6600GT 256MB (2nd one for SLI to come late next year) and like a 3500+ or so...I'm hoping to pick em up like around March or so next year...hopefully I'll have a good Christmas and be able to afford them earlier :)

Yuh talk real sense dere Czar, and its interesting the system you're planning to build, it sounds identical to what i've been researching lately... although by next year with any luck we'll be able to grad a 3800+ instead. And perhaps a variation of the 6600GT hopefully with slightly higher clocks. Oh and water cooling or a custom built passive coolign system(I fed up of all the noise from meh case). With some luck and price drops even the 12 pipeline 6800 standard or GT (16pipeline) would be a good alternative. The power of choices, its a good thing.

Well, lookin at current prices and trying to estimate their future prices, I been putting together this little wish list...I've been as conservative as I can be with my estimates, that's why I'm looking at the 6600GT & 3500+....but yeah, I'm definitely interested in going higher if the prices drop sufficiently...even if it means shelling out a little more than my current budget...

For real coldstorm, I think they should bring out a 6800 Standard with SLI, I would definitely shell out the money for that as opposed to just the 6600GT.
