The dream of silent cooling : HAS COME TRUE!
« on: October 02, 2004, 02:35:57 PM »
All case modders , overclockers, cooling freaks have one thing in common : they hate a noisy/whining fan!
   Introducing : the thermaltake SILENT BOOST for socket A and Socket 747!

www.thermaltake.com

Great cooling performance, and SILENT : i can now hear my little VGA fan above it, i need alot of effort to hear my case from 2 feet away! .

 PRos : good cooling for price [ just a little more than Volcano 7+]
  silent
can be modded with a loud fan for improved performance .
good clip design
Cons : none

temps SB :athlonXP 2500 = 34 idle , 42 load
            @athlonXP 3200 = 38 idle, 45 load
             @athlonXP 3400= 44idle, 50 load
temps Aluminium HSF [ with loud, 5000 RPM fan]
     AthlonXP 2500 = 39 idle , 46 load
      AthlonXP 3200 =42 idle, 50 load
      Athlon XP3400 = 47 idle, 56 load .
  i have a mobile, which is 2-3 degrees cooler, and i use AS5 too... which will make my scores lower than normal .

noise produced : 21DBa
 Fan speed        : 28 CFM/2900RPM
  all copper   heatsink .

EDIT : all scores were taken under an ambient temp of 23 degrees, and NOT playing battlefront..

volcano 11 is mostly aluminium ... meant for budget cooling of Durons mostly..... first  buy a tube of Arctic silver 5 , clean off the old thermal paste and put it on, thats 5-12 degrees dropped there, if its still too hot get one of the SILENT BOOSTS for 20 USD .

Aye man strongton wha is the temp of the air coming into the case? if yuh in a hot room yuh cyah expect too much from yuh cooling solution, also I differ with Trinireturnofthecallingvolancoduroncooling.  I have a 2600+ Barton like strongton @ 2.31Ghz and I have a volcano 9, and I run at 45-47 degrees avg, with a peak of 55 when playing games (farcry, doom 3, etc) and thats when my room is at 90-92 degrees, I agree with strong, he just got one of the hotter running chips, production spread man.

60C you worryin bout boy? Nah study dat nah, my 2600 runs at 56C when idle and can get up to 81C under extreme load...by extreme load I mean a Folding@Home screensaver dat doin some serious number crunching on protein folding... (http://folding.stanford.edu) ...when dat screensaver running, it pushes the CPU usage to 100% right thru...when I choose to exit the screensaver to use the machine, I chack the temp readout and it varies between 76-81C, depending mostly on how hot the day is...most games don't push it beyond 70C tho...

For cooling, I've only got a Volcano 7 on it...

Whoa dude... thats H.O.T. whoa... I think something is wrong with that reading cause those chips made to operate at a MAX of like 80 so 81 and stuff seems a bit much, yuh chip go melt into the board soon at that rate... I think the mobo is reading the temo wrong or something, I have NEVER and I repeat NEVER heard of a 2600 running THAT hot, heck any athl0n for that matter....

Czar man you  living in a bakery or what????? i thought  my 55 degrees load at midday was HIGH   :shock:

   sorry bout that... i mixed up the volcano 11 with the 8SE [solid aluminium!] . Big volcano 11 and 60 degrees? Get yourself an athlonXP mobile and sell the 2600!
   i have my machine under no AC or much room airflow , its on most of the day, loads at 50 degrees when its cool, 55 on a mc hot day .

  80 degrees load???? i thought the max for a non mobile athlon was 85 before it is permanenly damaged.

Yeah, I know it's hot, but I'm not too worried...she can handle it...it actually used to get hotter at one point but then I modded my case's side panel directly in line with the processor so that it pulls air in from outside and straight onto the processor fan which then pushes it down onto the processor...that dropped the temp about 10-12C, but of course there was a serious influx of dust...so I then took a piece of foam-like material like what your motherboard rests on in the box and cut it out to fit between the grill on the outside of the case and the fan on the inside to ease the flow of dust....but of course that also eased the flow of air so the temp went back up...

I also recently added another fan to the case just below my gfx card...seems that ever since they introduced that overclocking feature for the 9800's etc in the catalyst drivers, my machine been unstable...but only under load in 3D games...it would just crap out with those VPU errors, but usually I could just click Send Error Report and go back into my game...only sometimes would it be so bad that I would need to hit the Reset switch...turns out my gfx card was heatin up too much...cos with the fan right below it blowing directly onto it...no more crashes :)

Wish I saved the article that I read and got the idea for the fan mod, will check my home PC's history to see if I still have it...was quite simple actually. I'll try to take some pics if I can get a digi-cam borrowed.
