I’m asking, whats the most balanced fighting game
« on: September 23, 2004, 12:08:55 PM »
In terms of Character strengths , weaknesses, storylines, costumes. I know this is really a matter of opinion. So what do you think is the most balanced fighting game.

I’ll put it like this

Killer Instinct (believe it or not)

Mortal Kombat 2

Tekken 4

Street Fighter EX3

Killer Instinct was a great game. Plain and simple, the characters were well balanced and interesting. No one person seemed to be flawed. As for the later edition, that was straight garbage. They moves demanded too many commands, why is it necessary for me to do half a circle forward, back, forward and punch to get anything? The graphics were disgusting. Ugh

Mortal Kombat 2 was nice also. A lot of variety this time. Everyone was fun to play with, especially at the time. I could turn invisible and shoot a green slow moving explosive ball, or I could change into you for a few seconds. Variety was the key, multiple fatalities. Ohhh la la.

Tekken 4 is excellent. Wasn’t as popular as it was meant to be, because of the lack of variety, the masses complained that it felt like a watered down Tekken 3 all over again. Actually I say contraire to this. I think it was the best fo the series, this game lacked one thing for me and that was the inclusion of Yohimitsu’s ‘ Splitting Image’  throw move. Besides that, this felt solid. Some complained that the graphics a bit too. I personally think the characters looked like plastic, but it doesn’t stop me from doing that Death Cradle Roll on the fly.

Street Fighter EX3, perhaps the most hated of any iteration in the entire series. I like it. It was missing a lot of modes and the backgrounds don’t have that large, exciting feel as EX2 plus Alpha had but I love it anyway. Complaining about the graphics is dumb to me, it was one of the first five games on the PS2 so at that time, no one was sure how far the system could be pushed. It came back with more of a balanced feeling. Sharon was back to whoop Guile, Ryu was back to abuse Ken, and Garuda is back to whoop everyone. I am well versed with every character in this game, but Area and Pullum feel worthless to me.  So that’s it. I haven’t nor has anyone else played all fighting games, so this is my faves out of all I have played.
And as I sat down on the couch, reached down and grabbed the controller, I most nonchalantly looked over, barely gracing him with my eyes. I uttered calmly these simple and truthful words. \"Spread ur cheeks and bite down, cause now you are F*@%ED!\"

Guilty Gear XX #Reload and Virtua Fighter 4 : Final Tuned probably comes the closest to being balanced. There isnt really a balanced fighting game out there.  Some games also are up there 3rd Strike and Soul Calibur 2 imo aren't balanced but they does come a little close not as much as GGXX#R or VF4 FT though.

Perhaps. Then life for the people who play it would be a little more bearable, since they can play without fear of being taken advantage of by one specific, overly-abused character, say.....Sentinel or Magneto.

I truly don't know which fighting games out there are really and truly balanced, with the exception of Mortal Kombat 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 3. One game I can tell you is NOT nor will it ever BE balanced, is Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Characters like Sentinel and Guile are extremely overpowered, while others have been weakened beyond belief (Wolverine). And with the assist-abusing going on nowadays, the tournament scene has turned completely one-sided, and into a button mashers' paradise.

to me the term "well-balance" count many factors.

gameplay - how long the game is, how easy or hard it is, cheapness of gamestyle ( eg 1-3 hit win games, infinite combo games)
characters - number of characters, variety and originality of moves, difficulty of moves,
CPU Ai - a balance game has a diffuculty without the cheap feel, even if your beaten you never feel like you were cheated.

i think that one of the most balanced 2D fighter series has been the Kof series (up to 99). KOF 98 is view as one of the most balance fighters of all time. it satisfies all factors and even has great music. ofcourse some say kof97 or kof99 but that personal opinion.

oter than the kof series id say Killer instinct just for the degree of skill necessary. its never one-sided and a battle between pro game boil down into a plain fighter with neither able to keep up a lengthy combo.

to me there are very few balanced 3d games since many of them degenerate into a button mashing festival. yet the virtual fighter series has always manage to be well blanced. im sure the tekken crowd may be angered but please ive seen n00bs win with eddy just from pressing madly. also games you can die in 4 moves or a really nasty combo (king) dont really scream skill more like luck and timing.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Soul Calibur 2 come to mind.

I really like Tekken 4 but I'll be the first to admit that Jin is superior to all other characters.

Still a lot of fun and it's not so much so that other players can't win.

Which comes around to the second question. Is it really necessary for balance?

I think not, once you have 6-8 main characters that can mix it up enough, you good to go.

Not every character needs a sporting chance @ victory.

If they are just in there for variety, so be it. You don't need a lil cameo character able to lay the smack down on your star players.

actually I would not say Jin has any advantage over any other character, hes quite slick but he is rather weak and while he has a nice array of juggles they can all be easily evaded. I personally prefer an entire balanced cast, cause of my need for variety. I'm a 'random select' type of guy, i like combot and so on. so i would say balance is quite necesarry

Virtua Fighter: Evolution
As many traps and setups you can use to your advantage, there are just about the same number of ways to escape it.

Soul Calibur 2
Same as above.

Street Fighter EX3
With a little knowledge of the tag system, plain old late super cancelling traps and momentaries, anyone can be hard to beat.  Although, Rosso, Dhalsim and Kairi are very hard to stop when in top form, it is doable with just about every character you play.  The only thing broken here is probably Ace.  He has a VERY simple unblockable setup that I will be abusing on people here in time to come.

Samurai Shodown 4
Damn right I said it.  When you study the game on a noob level you can see what I mean.  People say, Galford's low C slash is cheap.  They then go on to say, Tam Tam's jumping C slash is cheap.  They can go on to add Okyo's range is cheap.  Then they can truly profess that Gaira's recovery is cheap.  It can also be added that Sogetsu's uppecut is cheap.  And then, Genjuro's infinite is cheap.  The list goes on.
Think hard enough and you'll realize that EVERYONE is cheap (in the noob definition of the word) and THAT's what gives it balance.  The skill is to manouevre you character into a position where they can abuse and brutalize.

GGX:Reload.
The same can be said as above.  Almost every charcter has some rapist strategy or technique or combo that it's harder than usual to really tell who is better than who.  That's damn frightening if you ask me.

3rd Strike.
I'd just put this up here coz it was fun to find out that everyone considered Makoto a low tier character 'till japan's best buddy Ino decided to rip everyone to shreds with her.  Then came the difference in opinions.  Makoto is top tier"bla bla bla!!!!"
That was funny as hell.  The same thing with CvS2 and Honda as of recently it seems.

tekken tag was much more balanced dan tekken 4...because of how tekken 4 was, players like steve and law have an advantage.in tag nobody was an underdog

i dont play mortal 2 at all but it is ballanced(prob because d moves 4 everyone are similar)

none of dem ex games were fair, players like sharon and shadow geist and nanase and area and the list goes on...dat game had too many mismatches

i am a big fan of soul calibur but i never really got a chance to play calibur 2 but from the few times i did the first ting i notice was de side step was diff. i have to play it some more to pass a final judgement but dat in itself make de game messy to me

Naw, i hold strong on the killer instinct for one. Every character was interesting and balanced, YES! I would say it, EVEN SPINAL. i personally thought he was garbage until i got my a$$ beat.  wow, as for tekken 4 being unbalanced, i have yet to notice that. Steve and law having what advantage? although Steve is both quick and has the fastest recovery time, it is only in compensation for him lacking the ability to KICK. he is also a boxer so these attributes are necessary. considering he can't kick and he can become quite predictable very fast i would say he is balanced. Law plays the same way he always has so i can't see any advantage he has over anyone. he has those cheap juggles but they don't last long and grow very weak with in a couple hits also.

Good to see they're still people like Wesley to ensure that noobism remains alive.

"None of EX games were balanced"  Where are the reasons?  All I see are names.

More fodder at the arcade I guess.

What does this have to do with consort?j  That's how Street Fighter IS.  EX is no exception.  If you slip up and get caught in a death combo, it's YOUR fault.  That is true since SF2 came out.  Two and sometimes one combo could end your sweat.  What is the problem with EX?  Still no REASONABLE answer.

lord street fighter gettin beat up bad bad boy

ex is balanced as every street fighter is balanced or even more balanced than some. In other street fighters you had to assure to control your characters strenghts well to make the match balanced and some are harder than others. I played Q versus my little brothers gill and he only did a few moves and yet i didnt know how to counter it. Any person with an uppercut was easy that counters everything but yuh hadda dig deep to make the balance. EX you just needed to play yuh game no one was overly cheap but some men was easier than others as any fightin game.

Hmph...Try again Kid - Sagat

All street fighters are not balanced, Even the classic SF2 games have flaws ie Championship Edition and World Warrior.  The Alpha series was broken, Alpha 2 and 3 were the most broken games Capcom has ever made. Anyone who says a Mortal Kombat game is balanced should be shot on sight.

Oh and for the record, Capcom didnt make SFEX , Arika did.
