I don't agree since accessing ram will always be faster than going to hard drive.

What is the sense of having more than 1GB of RAM or even 2GB to ensure you really don't need the pagefile? Once you cross 1GB you see very little performance gain.

Depends on how you measure "performance gain". Obviously if the whole program can fit in ram then loading/access time will be most optimal. Hard drive thrashing is very annoying to say the least and will happen if you run out of memory to hold your program(s). That said, unless your system actually uses (frequently enough) that much ram, and unless you tweak your pagefile settings (set min and max to same), a typical user won't notice more than 512MB muchless 1GB+.

yes yes you can, with XP not 2000

Win2k forces min size to "2MB" in OS itself. However, you can still manually set to zero. On startup it will always complain about a non existant pagefile, but you can ignore the warning.

But on the flipside, here a quote -

" Virtual memory is a safety net. If you have a leaky app or a resource hogging app running on your system your machine will BSOD as soon as physical memory is eaten up."

I always thought if u have 512 and up u dont need a page file

just asking!

Assuming you could run without a pagefile without any of your programs complaining...well the need for a pagefile is determined soley by how much ram you use on average and at max. In other words if you never exceed your amount of ram, then you don't "need" a pagefile.

What about video encoding?
Would you require more ram?
if u have 512

The actual process of encoding does not up that much ram, unless your using ram hungry processing filters.

512mb would be more than enough.

Its not how much ram you have but how much FREE ram is available for the program to use!

all the ram will run at pc100 speed at best.

At worst, system instability, ram not being recognized, things like that.

The ram will run at whatever you set it to run at or the system sets it to.

You can run most pc100 at 133 though you may have to set to weak timings for it to be stable.

As for not recognized...well that could happen to ANY stick of ram.

From my experience>NO>I encoded already on 256MB and program didn't take up much RAM (Tmpgenc).

remember he's also DISABLING all virtual memory, so he's gonna need more

Well he will need more ONLY IF hes already using up near all his ram currently, or will be using it up in the future. In that case he will have not enough free for situations like what I quoted in this thread.

if u have 1gb and u have the pagefile....should i get any probs. with old p.grams?

Not unless they are badly designed, in which case they probably would throw a fit just for your system having so much memory period - not being able to tell how much is actually there, muchless being able to use it.

1. Have system with pagefile already.
2. Create ramdisk.
3. On reboot move pagefile to ramdisk.

Note: You can't make a ramdisk on the fly just to suit a particular program's request. The OS/program handles memory management. While it is technically possible to have such a program it doesn't exist as far as I know.
