Metal is defined by the use of Rhythm Guitar for those of you who don't know is not just heavy stuff that ppl bang out to,this is why comparably slow bands like Helloween and Demons and Wizards are considered Metal and not alternative and that is why metal has melody not like all that noise a-la mudvayne and slipknot.AND DOH TALK FOR DEATH METAL by definition Death Metal should not be classed as metal it should be death ROCK it just seems like the freaks prefer to say they listen to metal than admit they listen to meaningless rock......

:-? Actually metal came form the sound of the guitars, metallic. All those clanks and dirty sounds.Other genres using overdriven guitar amps used smooth powerchords and 1 string palm mutes (punk....real punk)

But I like your definition better. You just kicked all the sucky bands out of the genre.

well that is what i used to think osiris but chupid people used to be tellin me i wrong an crap.... so does that mean that bands like perfect cirlcle and deftones are metal? cause the guitar rythms in circles songs are like SO beautiful (i play them too so i understand how they are made and the work involved) and in deftones, BOTH the drummin and the rythms are intoxicating (i play drums as well.....and a few others that shall remain unamed...)

well thanks for jus clearing that up once and for all for me...... :-P

lol yeh i guess my def does that but i derived that def from the fact that most if not all the "metal" bands i know have rhythm guitar....

not all death metal should be classified as simple rock...
...shouldnt the definition of metal have something to do with reality...
...and being...expession of the subliminal with lyrics as well as rythmic guitars...
...some death metal actually live up to the definition

Ok Some Death Metal Such as Slayer Has Rhythm Guitar but deth metal with Rhtym guitar is a whole new Genre i think is called Grindcore or somethin like that (i'm unsure as i don't delve into the death metal scene too much) this consists of bands like Napalm Death and so on

We don't need to classify bands in genres.
Some call deftones the beginning of NuMetal. And Chevelle as NuMetal.
It's not the class, it's what the band is feeling at the point of conception.
I've heard Matchbox 20 play metal
I've heard blink play metal
I've heard Metallica play pop
CHevelle's "one lonely visitor" is acoustic. that makes them folk?
And I still stand my opinion that Slipknot is just noise
