what anime is a 'must see'?

just curious. what anime do you consider 'essential' viewing? what kinds of series or movies do you feel even non-otaku will love? i have not seen a great volume of anime compared to some of the guys in GATT, but there have been a few series that have moved me or made me think in new ways.

my essential shortlist is:
berzerk
FLCL
serial experiments lain
princess mononoke
ghost in the shell: stand alone complex
rurouni kenshin: trust and betrayal

what other shows can i not die not until i see?

seriously dude, some nice picks so far, but showtime really telling me i should not go to my grave without seeing pokemon and dbz?

i enjoyed scryed alot but i dont think it was really groundbreaking.
since i have not seen the complete eva series yet i can't say.

Well, i wasn't stressin to much on the pokemon, but out of everything pokemon, that was the best one.

But just in case no one noticed, I happened to have mentioned Dragonball Z (japanese).......ever seen it?

yeah havent seen trigun yet...truly unique for its time
some good picks so far. trying to get my hands on fma and naruto.

is bebop really 'must see'? i only saw the movie
and while i do love record of lodoss war, i dont think it really is 'required viewing' as the themes and style of it have been done.

what is yu yu hashuko? a link to a synopsis please.
