You have a couple of options.

Slave your HD to another machine and copy off the data you want.

Reinstall using the rescue stuff you got.  Copy over your data.

Or get the XP install files off of a REAL XP retail CD on the machine and reinstall.  The machine should pick up the serial number used (or it is somewhere)

I had to do this with a Dell the other day.  Got the install files and reinstalled Windows.  Serial numbers got picked up.

There are enough XP keygens around to make installation and activation not a problem.

local HP support?

i'v had some really bad experiences with local Dell support through another company, the people installed Turtle beach drivers for the sound blaster card when the harddrive was replaced...

if it IS local HP support and something like this happens again, i suggest you start learning how to get your hands dirty in order to know how to undo something like this if it happens again.

give us a list of your hardware, maybe we can find the drivers for you.

srry for the first post... was reading something similar on another website and ended up writing the same thing twice..

i do not condone piracy... but i usually get software from illegal sources myself.. and if its good enough and worthwhile to get the real thing, i buy it .

the only thing that has fallen in this catagory for me so far is Half-Life, its the only online game i can play on dial up with a full server and no serious lag.

usually in a dell computer (or most computers from well known manufacturers) come with the serial embedded in the bios i believe... in this way u dont have to input or activate xp when you install from scratch (happens on my moms dell an my pops fren compaq)
