I Went wayyyyyyyyyyyy back when i was about 12 or something. Was taught by my grandfather who trained under Sensei Okasaki in Japan, real dreadman. I did Shoto Khan style, stopped at Purple Bar, one step below brown. Did it old school (there were no orange and red belts and so on) punching marks on a tree, doing the horse (straddle stance) with two buckets of water on your shoulders, stuff like that.

LOL i remember one of the Katas, you learn to rip a mans balls off with one move.........ouch

I've recently stopped doing Judo at Queen's Park Judo Club.
I reached 1st degree black belt . I have also won some local and international tournaments in my division.

I'm thinking of picking up Jiu Jutsu (sp).

I did Eagle Shadow Martial Arts 5 years ago and quit just before CXC.I only got to green belt however i was never a martial artist bound by one style.

Since I left ive been learning techniques from friends in other styles as well as teaching myself a thing or two.

Eagle Shadow Martial Arts = A modernized form of Korean styled Karate and Thai boxing. My Sensei teaches out of K & N fitness in Couva.

Of the 2 tournaments I fought in I placed 2nd and third in my division.

As soon as my life gets back in order I plan on earning my black belt.

One thing I can say I hate about the martial arts thing is that ppl tend to believe that because you're in a martial arts class or something, it means that you could fight.  That is DUMB.  But there are exceptions anyway.

that depends on

A) How focused you are on learning your given style
B) If your teacher is any good

Ive seen countless little kids given black belts and have their a$$es handed to them by the normal kid down the block. And lawd doh talk bout secondary school men who say they know kung fu and and goin purple dragon gettin into fights and gettin wash BAD BAD.

I still say to this day however its not enuff that you believe everything you are taught in the MA at face value. Its up to you to study your style and learn to adapt it to a given situation.  After all outside the dojo no one is going to wait for you to sink into a stance .

It also depends on

The versatility of the person
The person's size.  Yes size matters.
Reach advantage.
Stamina.
Strength.
Speed.
Timing.

Wow.  It's all these aspects that make fighting great.  Damn...how sweet life is.

Yup yup.
Having a Black belt & knowing how to defend yourself don't really go hand in hand in many schools.
/me philosophy" you come to hurt me, I run away, just hope you donj't catch me,cuz then it's on"
Another misconception is that tournament ,point fighters, can't defend themselves in real life.....
I've been to MANY tournaments, including the Pan american games, and I've seen some of these guys fight in my short time in this thing.
they are FAST,and they hit HARD. I had the displeasure of this girl (good point fighter) ,about 3/4 my height, hitting me in the shoulder. It was black for almost a week. Talk about PAIN. ALl they need is one opening, and that's it.

there are really few real fighters left.  There are a lot of people who do martial arts(like me) who are only average.  To be a really good fighter requires more natural skill than training.  Plus being a black belt doesn't mean you can come close to be a real fighter and it doesn't mean you can't get beat from a serious blue or green belt. Hidden has the best philosophy for T&T.  Lastly, hitting doesn't make someone a good fighter, jus mean.

To be a good fighter requires more natural skill?  Umm, haven't you noticed like this Rock Lee dude.  lol

Training and actual combat experience is what works IMO.

I remember when i was still a security guard . One night I got into it with this guy at club Mystics in Chaguanas. Now my official style is Eagler shadow however in that confrontation all that went out the window.

I ended up using boxing , Judo and a submission move (guillotine choke) to put the guy down.Well the guy got thrown out the club and was pissed as hell .He went home for an ice pick to come finish me off but the bouncer for the talked him out of it and eventually let him back in.
We got to talking and turns out the guy was a third degree black belt and then he apologised for acting like an @$$ because he was drunk. If only more people were like him . Oh yeah he said he was impressed that an out of training green belt took him down .(wasnt expecting the submission move and didnt know how to counter it lol).

Oh yeah and for the record Hidden I hate point sparring with a passion mainly because of the wildness some opponents do when attempting hit you. Some times i just feel like forgetting about rules     and nailing their @$$ with a good roundhouse to the head.

But sigh ....... discipline is everything.

lol @ roundhouse

Ain't that the truth.  You rarely see any point fighters that are true to the art form.  Some attacks I've never seen used in certain styles are used in point matches.  Ppl should get disqualified for that.
