The WOW Killer Has been Sited!
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:22:02 AM »
Ok this title was obviously intended to spark Emotional responses from those who have played ...or continue to play the 800 lbs Panda that is World of Warcraft.

Remember it's just my opinion...and maybe a little relief that WOW has 3 Challengers.

SWTOR
Tera Online
Guildwars 2

2012 is the End of the World......of Warcraft! (Nostro-DAMN-US ALL!!)  :violent5:

I'm All for GW2.....And i've never played GW1.....why? Because it's a GAME changer!!!

GW2 will follow the GW1 innovative model....Pay for the game...then Play for Free forever.

Microshop (transactions) will not affect/unbalance existing items...they are more for cosmetics....

This Game will seriously contend for one of the Greatest Games I'll ever play/spend time on....

I'm not counting out SWTOR...which is similar to WOW but a much more fun experience (according to reviews)

But with The 2 western MMO's Tag teaming WOW....and the Asian representative of Tera online....Mists of Pandaria has alot to Fight against this year.

The So-called Titan MMO that Blizz is working on also may surprise everyone....I've learnt to never count out BLizz as well.

New to the site, just wanted to say that GW2 looks like the best MMO ive seen since...well...ever. Hoping that its really everything that its hyped up to be. been playing SWTOR since launch and a bit bored now..got a lvl 50 battlemaster jedi sentinel but stoped playing for a bit. I think that SWTOR will only come alive after patch 1.2 launches later this month tho, cause that has to be the biggest content patch ive ever seen from any game short of being an expansion. We'll see who'll claim the 2012 MMO crown

Welcome Koustiq! nice having u here man. We have a few guys playing SWTOR right now. I think the initial enthusiasm for it died a bit but maybe it'll pick back up with the coming patch. GW2 is looking quite interesting but me personally will never pick up another MMO after i playing WoW for some time.

Check out this link for the SW players.

Blizzard Talks Titan, WoW Subs Loss to Star Wars: TOR

1:00 AM - March 21, 2012 by Kevin Parrish - source: The Orange County Register

Blizzard has acknowledged that it has lost subscriber to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

In November 2010, Blizzard saw around 12 million subscriptions to its highly-popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft. A year later, the company saw only 10.3 million, a sizable drop. So far Blizzard hasn't released numbers for December 2011 and January 2012, but there's indication that the numbers dropped even more once Star Wars: The Old Republic crashed the PC gaming scene towards the beginning of December. Have many WoW gamers jumped ship and donned a Jedi robe and lightsaber instead?

"Of course people are trying Star Wars - our development team are trying Star Wars! I'm one of the few people who's still playing it actually, but yeah we've seen a dip in subs," reports senior World of Warcraft producer John Lagrave. "It certainly has to at least be attributable to The Old Republic, but it's also attributable to people who want to wait and get Mists of Pandaria, so it's not surprising."

Since the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic, Blizzard has offered an aggressive promotion to get players back into Azeroth. Called the Scroll of Resurrection, current active members can send the virtual scroll to previous subscribers who in turn receive a free upgrade to Cataclysm, seven days of free game time, a boost to level 80 for one character and more.

Earlier this month Blizzard announced that it laid off approximately 600 employees worldwide although the reduction wouldn't have any impact on the development of World of Warcraft. The company determined this was necessary after conducting a review of its business based on current organizational needs. Approximately 90-percent of the affected employees will come from departments not related to game development.

Yet despite the layoffs, Blizzard is still hiring talent. It's also pulling members off the World of Warcraft team to work on the super-secret Titan MMOG. On Monday the Orange Country Register asked Blizzard how it plans to manage two MMOGs now that Blizzard has been reduced by 13-percent worldwide.

"There are people that had worked on the 'World of Warcraft' team that now work on that team [Titan] where we've had like a slow trickle of expertise," said game director Tom Chilton. "Meanwhile, we've also hired people in and trained them up over the last four to five years to take the place of some of the people that have gone to work on the other games."

Chilton added that it's possible the movement of development talent to project Titan could accelerate in the near future. "It's hard to say though," Chilton said. "I do believe there's room for us to have two highly successful MMO games. I don't feel like there's going to be a time where we just say 'OK, everybody on the WoW team, pack it up you're moving over to the Titan MMO.' I don't see that as being a realistic probability. I think we're going to try to staff up both teams and actually end up with two large, strong MMO teams."

Finally, there has been mention that the "trial" version of World of Warcraft could be extended beyond the level 20 limit, the amount of gold the player can carry and so on. Will the game go free-to-play? Probably not... at least, not in the foreseeable future. After all, EverQuest finally caved in after 13 years and went F2P last week, so it's not entirely impossible.

"There's a fair amount that you can experience up to level 20, because you really get most of the core systems in by that point," Lagrave told Eurogamer. "But we can absolutely say, 'Hey, why don't we make it level 40?' 'Why don't we make it level 60?', do we let you at least experience the old world? It's all possible. Right now, no, but that's all absolutely on the table."

WOW will always have fans.....Just like Ultima Online and Everquest before it... You've spent many a Waking (and maybe Sleeping) hour invested in your character....the Addiction to achieve....to socialize .....one does not simply forget...

But one does not simply Forget the boredom....the inane repetition....and Internet Trolls as well. WoW's Grind for everything was just too OCD inducing! PVP servers were downright unfair....and guess what...It's not Fun for a ressed player....

SWTOR.....is the best of the WOW clones....get's many things right.....yet as mentioned....it's getting Stale to some already....

RIFT still has support....but again Alot of People are fed-up of Subscriptions....

TERA is Still in BETA and So is Guildwars 2....

Many MMOs have learnt that WoW's formula was so dominant that they will follow....

I'm going to support the innovator....the Gamble being that that Guildwars 2 is loads more fun than a "traditional" MMO!

Nice sentiments Sesmie, after being through those PTP (Pay to play) MMOs, won't hurt to try a few FTP (Free to play) ones, there are a good amount of them there that can compete with the likes of WoW and SWTOR so check the list and take your pick.

Sesmie gets a good number of things correct. I say this every interview or ask about the industry; there is a demograpic shift every 10 years in the gamer and therefore the game must follow.

Although WOW is still the largest pay to play mmo available, by far!! The demograpic has shifted. However it is not ToR. Tor has gotten themselves stuck in the transition phase, its what we used to love about WoW but not thinking 5 minutes ahead, in a nutshell it doesnt hit all the marks.

No one title is going to take down a juggernaut like WoW, Rift took a slice, SwTor took a slice, Tera will take a bit, guild wars 2 .....etc etc.

I am aware of all these titles, focus tested, alpha and am currently in beta for Tera and GW (pays to be in the industry) was even part of the new defunct warhammer 2k mmo. They are all pieces....but not a whole

SwToR has made the greatest impact but the test is time. Personally I played it for a couple months and had my fill. I will return to it if more content comes out, they are working on a new dungeon and pvp

As for the titan project......well lets say everything above has their days numbered :)

Been playing GW2 for some time now. Not just alone but with friends, and not just friends but 2 GM's of the servers who also work for NCSoft. It's an OK game. I still would call it MMO light. Although it has changed drastically from GW it's still instanced gaming, just very well disguised.

Quest areas are broken up into open areas and instanced areas. I've pretty much solo'd my way to 20. The instanced areas request a party or a certain level, the penalty for failure is a debuff, but you can run straight back into battle and clear the zone

Also tried a few of the starting zones. REALLY love the Sylvari race. I was told that typically the human areas feel lackluster on purpose since other races (such as Sylvari) are unknown to many gamers. We tend to gravitate to what we know best...human. Its to help push people away and try new stuff, which is a nice idea...i guess.

However theory and action are two different things. The game is fun, nice weekend of gaming, just like the first GW. Will be trying the PVP later to see how it is.

On a personal note for someone who has been playing MMO's steadily for about 14 years its what you pay for. And a good one at that. Worth a purchase? sure, a flat rate with no pay to play you cant go wrong.

However I still stand by TERA ONLINE. It is hands down the best MMO I have played this year so far. Its old school, its HARD and *knock on wood* if they follow their business plan like CCP does with EVE, they may never have to water down the game to cater to a growing community.
