hoss they can't do much to the change the core right now all they could do is to increase memory speed and gpu speed . so it ok to release first . can't reverse engineer a gpu in 2 week a have a prototype out for people to look at

You spot on dey...with such close release dates, the best that ATI can do is tweak their drivers some more or reconsider their pricing scheme...even if the release dates were 2 months apart, it still wouldn't be enough time for them to make any significant changes.

I really hope so, but looking at the leaked ATI presentation and other bits of information among the various hardware enthusiast sites, my gut feeling is that they've been beat this round...but who knows, maybe they do have an ace up their sleeve...time will tell.

when ATI Says 2x the speed they mean it..... The date was always scheduled for april 26th . Like he said its impossible to redo and entire core in 2 weeks, but they have more time to tweak drivers and optimize code.


 even if the new card turns out to be crap, it WILL be faster than the 9800pro/XT and their prices will drop into the 9600XT range, the 9600xt will drop to the 9200 pro range.

the R300 chip design has been exhausted, as proven by the minor speed jump that the 9800XT had over the 9800 pro . The new High end model card will not be anything vaguely similar to the Radeon 9800XT . IT will be on a smaller trace size [130nm vs 150 nm] to decrease heat and increase clock speed . IT will have 12-16 pipelines and it will be FASSSST .

how fast is yet to be seen, even if ATi does not support DX9.0 c their shaders are fast enough to compete with the 6800XT

all of ATi's new high end cards are come with "XT" at the end. All their new cards are "X-800". AnandTech has the ATi tech roadmap stating some of the details on all their new models .  

 the transition to PCI-X is nothing but a ploy to save manufacturers money and increase sales, the AGP 8x slot's bandwidth has not reached a bottleneck yet, in fact AGP 4x is has not bottlenecked yet . if all the slots on the new boards are the same the mobo companies will save money by leaving out a slot, and they will get high sales because everyone will think the PCI-X cards are soooo much faster than their identical AGP 8x models.

 it would be nice to see Nvidia back on top for awhile though, ATi cards are rising in price, the equivilant of my 80 USD radeon 8500 is a 95 USD 9200 pro .

But PCI-X IS faster than AGP.That was the point of it.And I think AGP wasn't the only reason for it.Other demanding devices will use PCI-X too.And the fact is NON of allyuh know if the ATI or Nvidia gone be faster than each so all u "critics" with all ur "theories" better relax.

some correction need to be made
the x800 pro is out come april 26 not the xt it has 12 pipleines clock at 500 MHZ memory at 1 GHz MSRP suppose to be $399 US
the x800 xt comes out may 31  has 16 piplines clocked at 600 MHZ and memory at 1.2 GHZ
on june 14 the r423 or the pciexpress version of these card comes out

As for the specs, the R420PRO or should we call it X800PRO will be clocked at 475 MHz, 25 MHZ higher then we suggested since yields are better, while the memory will be clocked at 900MHz as we suggested before.

Everything is packed into 180 millions of transistors and the card has 12 pipelines as we suggested. The R420XT, Radeon X800XT will be higher clocked card with 16 pipelines which came as a huge surprise to us.

This card is meant to fight Geforce 6800 non Ultra - the one with 12 pipelines and should be in retail as soon as ATI launches it.

This means that you should be able to buy one on the 4th of May but let's wait and see if ATI can deliver on that day.

Faster Radeon X800XT will come just after E3, and soon after the 14th of May we are told. I cannot remember if I said this before, but the R420 is chip based on R300 marchitecture and you can clearly see this from its 96 bit precision support and lack of PS 3.0.

Performance wise it will give NV40 a good run for its money

Crixx it depends on the website and the tests used but it wasn't all that it was hyped up to be. Still it is ultimate power and far, far above the competition. Nvidia is back.

Trini.. it is beta drivers they used. When there are polished drivers and the problems still exist then you can start your conspiracy theory. Common sense eh?

What hype?> THat is part of the beauty of the 6800
they kept quiet for all this time, they said nothing when the 9800xt was released, released there 5900 and 5950 with very little hype and then dropped an ion cannon beam on ati with the 6800.

4800 is memory is right is a 8x version of the 4400
4600 was the best one of that series
might be more worth it to get a 9600 xt  would be better performace
9700 pro at least or 9800 se and flash it to 9800 pro standards

the 9800 pros are closing in to 200 USD on www.newegg.com , the 4800 is an overblown 4600 with AGP8x and hii clock speed. it's faster for dx8 than the 5700/5600 ultra but its alot worse for DX9/openGL 1.5 than the 5600/5700 or even my old radeon 8500 .[ 40-60 fps in POP,25-30 fps in halo, 20-25 fps in KOTOR @ 1296x1024 with 16x aniso, all with cat 4.4 drivers ] .
  the 9700 pros are already 150/140 USD if you can find one, they still can murder anything nvidia has for the price .

 I nvidia to pwn for 1 round so i can get a cheep 9700/9800 .

Well by the end of the year hopefully I will have a new system. I will hold onto this 9600 and see what happens when I ready to upgrade and decide whether to buy a new vid card or just keep this one. I know I will most likely change because I'm one of those people that like havin the new ish.

the geforce 4 TI 4200,4400,4600,4800 have 4 pipes

the geforce 4 MX , Geforce 2 TI , geforce 2 ultra , geforce 2 mx have 2 pipes

the geforce 3 has 4 pipes

the radeon 7500 has 2 pipes

the radeon 9500,9700,9800 pros  and the 9800XT
have 8 pipes

the geforce FX 5800,5900,5950,5900XT,5900SE have
8 pipes

i may haved mixed it up but you get the idea, more pipes = faster

it is not main thing that makes graphics cards fast, but it helps alot, more pipes = more shading and textures in one pass = better
