Something to think about ____-NVIDIA
« on: September 25, 2003, 02:59:36 PM »
NVIDIA made two poor bets a couple of years back that led to the lackluster introduction of the GeForceFX 5800 (NV30).

The first mistake was one that has been widely covered - the decision to go with a 0.13-micron manufacturing process. NVIDIA assumed that TSMC's 0.13-micron process would be much more mature than it was when NV30 was ready to go to production; in the end, a 0.13-micron process that lacked maturity held the NV30 back many more months than it needed to be.

The second mistake NVIDIA made with NV30 was in their assumption that flip chip packaging technology would not be ready by the scheduled introduction of the NV30. Without a flip chip package, NVIDIA did not think that a 256-bit memory interface would be a viable option and thus chose to outfit the NV30 with a 128-bit memory interface.

Both of these mistakes combined with drivers that were still in their infancy led to a very disappointing introduction of the GeForceFX. Not being the type of company to just fade away, NVIDIA immediately shifted their focus to NV35 even before NV30 hit the shelves

NVIDIA was able to use slower (and cheaper) memory with the NV35, as well as drop the core clock a bit in comparison to the NV30. Will the architectural enhancements and 256-bit memory bus be able to overcome these reductions? You better believe it and soon you'll find out exactly how. Also note that NVIDIA is planning on introducing cheaper 128MB versions of the NV35 core in the next month.

Today we're finally able to bring you all there is to know about NVIDIA's latest GPU and the new GeForceFX 5900 Ultra.

As if that weren't enough, today we've got a special treat for you all as well. You may have heard of a game called "Doom3" and later on in this review you'll see a total of 8 GPUs compared using a current build of the game

Ummm...this looks like a real old article that I read a while back...today's news shows that nVidia may actually be shifting their focus from the graphics card market to other more profitable arenas like chipsets etc...have a look for yourself -> http://www.legionhardware.com/html/doc.php?id=261&p=3

TrinithereturnofGamez, please remain on topic. That last post can easily be classified as spam.

As for NVIDIA branching out, I'm not surprised, but I somehow doubt that they will end their presence in the graphics card market anytime soon.

this is old news
i thought people would be more concerned about benchmark fudging allegations against NVidia and the fiasco that was the 51.75 drivers. how could they let SO many bugs through? what is Nvidia really doing to ensure driver optimizations dont result in such crappy results in the future? when are they going to address the real direct X9 performance issues?

and i seriously doubt vexx type that article by himself. why dont you give the real author credit?

yeah vex.. we all know you couldn't spell Nvidia right without copy and paste...
True nvidia has gotten drunk from success like 3dFX did .  I wouldn't be surprised if nvidia goes bankrupt and ATI buys them out like Nvidia did to 3dFX . But the question is, where is the neo-nvidia? matrox isn't even mentioned anymore, who will take up the crown after ATI falls ?
If nvidia makes one more major mistake , like having the 5950 be another 5800, or having 2-3 releases of buggy drivers they will be dead in the water . Not even the Hardcore nvidia boys will save them

Not so fast u dumb noob.

U may not have typed "written by Vexx", but u posted that article under your identity without giving credit to the author/owner/creator of the writing. U at no time mentioned that they even existed till confronted with an accusation and proof to support it. Your actions are seen as reprehensible and may be deemed as theft of intellectual property. That makes u a spammah. And u know what we do to spammers.

caught and bowled in vexx mc!

lol

I'll bet that is from Toms hardware, they did such a write up on the NV35 and showed it kicking brass in Doom 3 with a build that they were fortunate to have in their possesion.

ATI got a whooping and it's probably the most notorious pro FX 5900 articles in circulation.

The doom scores were with the 5900, which sports the new core.

The old fx was the 5800

Get yuh facts correct hoss.

Nvidia bought out 3dfx. Their factories, their rights, maybe their employees. But not their spirit and knowledge. ATI always gave them a run for their money. I had an onboard Rage that ran sof2 and Quake normal. And that was with a 433 Celeron.
Now I have a GF2 now with a much faster cpu behind it and more ram, and there's no difference in f/s.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1821

(For anyone who wants to read the review "quoted" in the first post).

As far as the whole Nvidia vs ATI war goes we're all waiting for Nvidia to come clean - the FX5900 is not TOTAL crap its just the shady "optimizations"  that have been revealed have really put a bummer on their image. Hopefully they'll come good again like they did with the Geforce 4 series (yes even the much "hated" yet still much used MX line cuz of its price/perf). When they do they better drop the FX name - and hope we forget about it quickly.

I said this before and I'll say it again Nvidia = bad ATI = good
Really folks, do you want something that gets good enough graphics but heavily taxes your CPU or do you want something that uses it's own resources.
Also this is proved again with Linux. Linux is pretty friendly with ATI and not so with Nvidia. Why? Linux isn't the best when it comes to intensive drivers and the like. This reinforces that ATI is the better card. Also Linux rocks! Solaris too!

About the linux statement, I've heard the opposite on many an occasion.
But I'm yet to see it myself with a high end card and a taxing game to go with it.
