Neo,

The reason that Red Hat and Fedora do not do multimedia out of the box is because there are patent problems with the mp3 codec (you can go by xmms.org to d/l the file that will give you the mp3 playback you're used to).

Same with divx and DVD.  I think the DIVX codec isn't Free, and the freely downloadable ISOs are very careful as to what they can and cannot put in a freely downloadable ISO.

You must also remember that Red Hat is based in the USA.  Different laws from the French Mandrake, the German Knoppix, the German (now American) SuSe or the Canadian Xandros.

It's not a technical reason.

One other thing.  Fedora is experimental. Experimental releases do tend to have bugs in it.

rich, i understand your point concernig laws about mp3's/divx in various countries, but what gives with the dialer in rh? i've used this on mandrake 9.0, 1 and 2, also on knoppix 3.1 and 2.i doubt there r laws about the dialer too.dont get me wrong eh people im not bashing red hat, but other distros i.e mandrake seems to have gotten these simple things sorted out.

Not sure about the dialler.  Is that the one in KDE?

If so, the Gnome dialler might work better than the KDE one for Red Hat.

With real hardware, they are simple.  Drivers are actually the responsibility of hardware manufacturers, and it's dumb to blame the operating system when a lot of times, people buy or use crippled hardware to save a buck in manufacture.

Real modem= three minute Linux dialup configuration.  It actually takes me more time to set up Windows boxes now than it does for me to set up a Linux box.

Shouldn't have.  What brand of Cd were you using?  What brand is your burner?

k3B is a much better burner.

ROFL.

From the very easy (think Mandrake and Knoppix) to the fiendishly difficult (the BSDs and Slackware), we got it all.

Plus more live CDs than you can shake a stick at.
