« on: September 24, 2003, 07:31:56 PM »
On the 7 day Linus saw that everything was good!! so he decided to dedicate his OS to the open source movement and it was good. I was hoping that Rich Job would have done this before me but it looks like i beat him to the chase, I would like to know two things Rich job Please or any linux heads respond!!
What is a good linux distro  for someone wanting to learn about the operating system to get and also what is a good Gui  for the latest mandrake release of Linux

I've yet to get into the whole Linux thing properly, but from what I understand, the best for new users would be Mandrake 9 and KDE 3.
Have you ever wished things just were?

Red Hat is great for learning and an added plus is that it is one of the most used in the industry.  I use it but plan to try slackware fairly soon (not for the beginner). Another good idea is if you are really new try a live CD that runs the OS from a CD; I reccomend Morphix.
All hail Linux!

Pay?

I can drop off a CD off for you in SnS, if you want.

Or go to GATT HQ and ask Baego about the Knoppix CDs I dropped off some time ago.

(tho' I have some new ones.  :) )

I got the Knoppix on CD was some pretty cool stuff. People should try a little of that and see what they think of it.

ill remember this when after you try doing your first compile. the problem is that when your moving from windows to linux the brainwashing you get from windows means that linux is a bit more of a task. for a home user who just wants to surf and type a few docs linux is grand but the learn curve is a bit steeper when you want to learn the ins and outs.

So I installed Slackware yesterday (yeah, for Divali).
It was stress to install, LILO took out my MBR and didn't let XP back inside.
And it's stress to get it online.
But other than that, shweetness.
