The Communications act: AT&T coming to T&T since 89'

My brother and some friends of his decided to get their skills and money together and start an ISP to compete with the TSTT monopoly. They were going to cover the entire island with a wireless network and get a low ping/high bandwidth sattelite service . They were also starting up plans for the NGN: national gaming network [ my own suggestion] which would have revolutionized gaming in T&T. If it came through we would be able to connect as many gamers as a server can hold together in an UBER MASSIVE LAN PARTY! 3-4 GLs could be involved in one tournament at the same time! it would have revolutionized gaming and attracted tourism . The broadband service also should have been a 256/64k connection with RELIABLE bandwidth and pings below 100 .
   But.... we realized why AT&T coming to trinidad since 89'.
  The communications act prohibits ANY TRANSMITION OF VOICE WITHOUT THE CONSENT OF TSTT. so.. technically.... it is illegal to have a walkie talkie, or a stryafoam cup phone . If "voice" extends to 0s and 1s then having a LAN , Wi-Fi network or gameboy linkup is illegal .
 The ministry of communications does not know which frequencies are free and which need licsencing . One individual stated that they are  "still in the process of drawing up legislation " for the different radio frequencies, so wireless broadband is screwed . The same individual asked for " a lil' ting' " to get the process under way... and the PNM is accusing the UNC of corruption .
   This is the fault of no one party.. they ALL had their chance, and they did nothing... because of them trinidad is cursed with TSTT!
 AT&T and the others will NEVER come down unless this government does something... or they are removed. The propoganda of the "Fast Forward " project is BULLSHIT! they know NOTHING about ANYTHING  , they just want to fool us into thinking they care.
  how this affects us
1. we will NEVER get a ping bellow 250
2. we will ALWAYS die in ANY online game
3. X-Box live is still a dream
4. FF-XI online is a nightmare.
5. Trinidad will be left behind in the telecom sector, which means no GOOD internet accsess EVER  

 DOWN WITH DEMOCRACY! COMMUNISM! FACISM! ANYTHING BUT A PACK OF FOOLS IN A PARLIMENT!

We actually have a GATTer who plays on XBOX Live with TSTT ADSL (Ronnie2.0). I still believe the monopoly will be broken soon. TSTT wouldn't be in this cell phone frenzy if they were on solid ground.

apparently this backs up TrinithereturnofGamez statement. it comes as no surprise to me though as the old legislation just doesnt allow for all the new technology an advancements that have taken place. yet as far as i see unless we walk into parliement with some bullpistle and cutlass them two beotches (PNM, UNC) well never get together to pass the bill. i hate spitefull politics. it rediculous one group bring a bill  because of spite the opposition stall it. the oppposition become gov't and bring back the same bill but cause of spite the ex gov't go stall it. i wonder if these ppl forget who these LEGISLATURE ARE REALLY FOR?

Put simply, we can blame this all on the primitive politics that goes on in our parliment. It does not matter who is in power; neither will open up the market anytime soon. TSTT, as a business looking out for itself, is not going to give up its monopoly just like that.

I wait for the day when the market does indeed open up. When competition enters the market, we'll see speeds going up and prices coming down. Plain and simple. Is there no government who will act out of the best interests of the populace?

i think as the gammers of tnt and r the soul funders 4 tstt`s internet shi**y service we should carry a document(can`t remember name of it but) with the signatures of all gatters to the ministry of information and technology demanding a change in legislation on the telecumminications act which allows other tele com company`s to start up shop in tnt

That's easier said than done, unfortunately. Hate to sound like a wet blanket and all, so to speak, but as long as TSTT can charge the highest possible rate for the least expensive service they can offer, they will. The only things that can end this are:

1) Opening up of the telecommunications market to competition in both the wireless and land line arenas
2) An unbiased controlling body looking out for the best interests of the country and its people
3) Both of the above.
